  • An Integrated Adaptive Maintenance Concept
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Condition Monitoring and Diagnosis 2010. - Tokyo, Japan.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper, we present a novel maintenance concept based on condition monitoring and dynamic maintenance packaging, by showing how to connect the information flow from low-level sensors to high-level operations and planning under uncertainty. Today, condition-based maintenance systems are focused on data collection and custom-made rule based systems for data analysis. In many cases, the focus is on measuring "everything" without considering how to use the measurements. In addition, the measurements are often noisy and the future is unpredictable which adds a lot of uncertainty. As a consequence, maintenance is often planned in advance and not replanned when new condition data is available. This often reduces the benefits of condition monitoring. The concept is based on the combination of robust, dynamically adapted maintenance optimization and statistical data analysis where the uncertainty is considered. This approach ties together low-level data acquisition and high-level planning and optimization. The concept has been illustrated in a context of rail vehicle maintenance, where measurements of brake pad and pantograph contact strip wear is used to predict the near future condition, and plan the maintenance activities.

  • Clearing for Action : Leadership as a Relational Phenomenon
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Although leadership is deemed to matter, scholars seldom pay attention to the phenomenon itself, as it is happening. Hence definitions abound, but there is a lack of vocabulary for expressing what leadership is about without ending up talking of individual leaders and/or descriptions of abstract “goodness”. Such an idealised and individualistic construct of leadership has consequences, both in theory and practice, in terms of providing a reductionist account, segregating and putting people in hierarchies, reinforcing the dominance of masculinities, and constraining how leadership is to be performed. Therefore, in order to contribute to our still limited knowledge of leadership beyond ideals and individualised conceptions, the purpose of this thesis is to add to our understanding of leadership as a social phenomenon going on at work and to contribute to developing a vocabulary for it.Reading the empirical material more and more closely, produced through an ethnography-inspired approach at two Swedish organisations and consisting of transcripts of interactions and interviews, the initial research question, “how is leadership shared in practice?” is subsequently modified and different strands of theories are applied: shared leadership, postheroic leadership and a radical processual view of leadership. In this way, different understandings of leadership are analysed. As a result, the theoretical concepts of organisational becoming, relational leadership and work practices are combined in an alternative approach. Two leadership practices are thus identified: constructing positions and positioning, and constructing issues. Such an analysis also leads to an alternative way of understanding leadership: leadership as clearing for action. Clearing is both a space, a bounded space, and an action. Therefore it expresses a relational perspective in which there are no stable entities, by suggesting a more dynamic view, at the same time as it also conveys the idea that we are talking about a constrained space.I thus define clearing for action as an emergent bounded aggregate of actions and talks that become possible, making others impossible or less probable. Actors and their worlds are constructed in certain ways that expand or contract the space of possible action. The result is a specific reading of leadership to add to the field of leadership studies. In this reading, leadership is an ordinary, repeated, social achievement at work in which possibilities for action and talk are constructed in constrained terms.

  • Standardization and Innovation : The Janus-face of Service Innovation
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: NFF 2011 - Nordic Academy of Management. - Stockholm University.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study is focused on the back-office function of service innovation, in which much service innovation work is executed. The paper shows that standardization is an important and interrelated part in service innovation.Standardization is utilized by management at several levels of the development process as a way of organizing the courses of action. The approach utilized for the collection of empirical data is qualitative interviews as a basis for a comparative case study.

  • Bio-refinery system integrated with pulp and paper mills using black liquor gasification
  • 2010
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Mitigation of climate change and energy security are major driving forces for increased biomass energy utilization. The pulp and paper industry consumes a large proportion of biomass worldwide that include bark, wood residues, and black liquor. Due to the fact that modern pulp and paper industries have established infrastructure for handling and processing biomass, it is possible to lay foundation for future gasification based bio-refineries to co-produce electricity, chemicals or bio-fuels together with pulp and paper products. There is a potential to export electricity or bio-fuels by improving today’s existing chemical pulp and paper mills integrating gasification technology. The present study evaluates the energy conversion performance of integrated black liquor gasification (BLG) within the chemical pulp mills in comparison with conventional pulp mill energy system. The objective is to investigate and compare various BLG technologies and bio-fuel production routes. The comparison is performed to identify the advantageous route based on system performance indicators e.g. bio-fuel production potential, fuel to product efficiency (FTPE), biomass import, overall system thermal energy efficiency, on-site CO2 reduction using carbon capture, and potential CO2 offsets from bio-fuel use in transport sector. The study on a variety of BLG configurations shows promising results for potential bio-fuel production offering significant contributions toward fossil fuel savings, emission reductions, and improved energy security. Methanol, synthetic natural gas (SNG) and dimethyl ether (DME) show promising features as potential fuel candidates. The comparative results show significantly larger bio-fuel production potential of black liquor conversion to SNG from catalytic hydrothermal gasification than DME, methanol or SNG production from the dry BLG (DBLG) and Chemrec BLG (CBLG) systems. The energy ratio of SNG production from the CHG system is higher than DME and methanol in the CBLG and the DBLG systems. When considering consequences of incremental biomass import, the DBLG system is far better than the CBLG and the CHG systems mainly due to the elimination of the lime kiln. Considerable reduction of on-site CO2 emissions could be achieved using CO2 capture and storage in the pulp mills. The CHG and the CBLG systems shows better performance results than the DBLG system comparing potential CO2 emissions offset from bio-fuels replacing fossil fuels.
