- The purpose of this dissertation is to study the fantastic in the tales of the Italian children’s author Gianni Rodari. This analysis is grounded in the hypothesis that the fantastic is primarily characterized by two esthetic qualities, play and lightness, both of which are manifested at different levels in these texts, as well as in the relation between children and adults.As a background for the textual analysis in the present work, an introductory review is provided of previous research, followed by a historical and theoretical consideration of fantastical children’s literature, together with a study of Rodari’s own relation to the fantastic. For previous research, the results clearly indicate an arbitrary relationship to Rodari’s texts, such that the fantastic is admittedly recognized, but is often confused with the fairy-tale. However, the present review of the history of Italian fantastical literature for children indicates that Rodari is writing in a fantastical and humorous tradition that begins with Pinocchio, a tradition that is inter alia characterized by its ability to bridge the gap between children’s and adult literature. Based on theoretical definitions of the fairy-tale (Propp, Thompson, Lüthi) and the fantastic (Todorov, Rabkin, Jackson, Held), the present work presents its own model for the study of Rodari’s texts, which are also compared with the author’s own poetics, The Grammar of Fantasy.A narratological analysis of a tale with both a children’s and an adult version (in itself an example of crosswriting) demonstrates that the fantastic and the humoristic are given freer rein when Rodari is writing for children. This appears to be linked to his concept of the child as the ideal reader, a reader primarily defined by an open and unprejudiced attitude to literature, rather than by age per se. The dissertation’s study of play and lightness (lack of weight) clearly confirms the hypothesis that these elements are a major component of the fantastic in Rodari’s texts; the results nevertheless indicate that play dominates on the level of language, and lightness on that of content.One of the most important results of this dissertation is that Rodari’s texts, in addition to possessing certain stylistic characteristics, do not demonstrate any deeper similarities to fairy tales. Instead, the author’s tales share numerous characteristics with the traditional concept of the fantastic such as a clear reaction to the supernatural element, and a particular interest in both the material nature of language and existential liminal regions. At the same time, the results indicate several specific characteristics that distinguish the fantastic in Rodari from that which is written for adults, such as its explicit grounding in the child’s everyday existence and imaginative world, as well as its backgrounding of frightening aspects, with prominence instead being given to playfulness.

- As part of a series of initiatives to study and promote circulation of Italian literature abroad, especially in Scandinavian countries, the paper describes “Italian Classics in Sweden”, an event that took place in Stockholm on 26-27 September 2011. It was hosted by the “C. M. Lerici” Italian Cultural Institute in collaboration with the Sapienza University of Rome, Stockholm University and the Arnoldo and Alberto Mondadori Foundation. Three major events characterized the project: the presentation of the Swedish translation of Why Read the Classics by Italo Calvino and the inauguration of the exhibition “Copy in Italy. Italian authors in the world since 1945” (26 September), and the study day “Italian Classics in Sweden” (27 September), which was attended by Anders Cullhed, Alberto Asor Rosa, Luminitza Beiu-Paladi, Igor Tchehoff, Marina Zancan, Karin Dahl, Laura Di Nicola, Alberto Cadioli, Luisa Finocchi, Cecilia Schwartz, Eva Swartz Grimaldi, Paolo Grossi.

- Fino a tempi recenti, le pubblicazioni degli scrittori svedesi sul mercato librario italiano erano rare e sporadiche. Salvo la presenza di August Strindberg e Selma Lagerlöf, le offerte al pubblico italiano di poeti e narratori svedesi sembravano guidate da slanci improvvisi e arbitrari. Solo con la nascita della casa editrice Iperborea nel 1987 si avverte un cambio di rotta che ormai ha consolidato definitivamente la posizione della letteratura svedese in Italia. Saranno presentati, nell’intervento attuale, i risultati di un’indagine quantitativa e qualitativa sulle opere letterarie svedesi – per adulti e per ragazzi – apparse in traduzione italiana nell’ultimo trentennio. I dati statistici serviranno per approfondire la discussione su diversi aspetti connessi al mercato editoriale, con particolare attenzione all’immagine della Svezia e del Nord che scaturisce dalla selezione di libri svedesi proposta ai lettori italiani nel periodo indicato.

- Lo studio della letteratura italiana oltrefrontiera è oggi in via di espansione. Partendo dal caso svedese, il libro propone un quadro complessivo della fortuna internazionale delle opere italofone in traduzione. L’analisi degli svolgimenti della letteratura italiana in Svezia dal 1870 al 2020 mostra un ampio panorama di autori, generi, correnti e tendenze che, nonostante gli ostacoli riscontrati, hanno raggiunto i lettori svedesi. Gli agenti coinvolti in questa migrazione di libri – editori, traduttori, critici e istituzioni – sono esaminati da una prospettiva che mira a congiungere le più recenti idee emerse negli ambiti della traduttologia, della world literature e della sociologia della letteratura, offrendo un percorso metodologico utile a chiunque sia interessato ai rapporti transnazionali della letteratura. Un’attenzione particolare è rivolta alle scrittrici e alle traduttrici che hanno contribuito notevolmente a consolidare la fama della letteratura italiana contemporanea in Svezia. Gli atteggiamenti della critica vengono osservati da lontano e da vicino, proponendo un catalogo della ricezione svedese di autori come Grazia Deledda, Elsa Morante, Italo Calvino, Natalia Ginzburg, Pier Paolo Pasolini ed Elena Ferrante. Il volume è corredato di una bibliografia online delle opere italiane tradotte in svedese.

- Drawing on Antoine Berman’s theory of translation as a critical act, this article analyzes the Swedish translation of Giovanni Verga's masterpiece I Malavoglia. The actual translation analysis therefore takes as its starting point a pre-analysis that highlights the translator’s individual motives to deviate from the source text. The results show that the Swedish translator has done extensive changes to Verga’s polyphonic novel, giving it a more homogeneous form. Drawing on theoretical ideas on the translator’s unconscious and habitus, the article shows that the translator has downplayed the novel’s expressive and vernacular traits as well as the patriarchal perspectives, emphasizing instead the novel’s religious paths.
