  • The Crisis is Over but Frugality Must Continue: Post-consolidation Fiscal Policy and the Dualisation of the Swedish Model
  • 2021
  • In: Sociologia del Lavoro. - Milan : Edizioni Franco Angeli. - 0392-5048 .- 1972-554X. ; 159:1, s. 152-171
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Previous research has predominantly analysed the retrenchment of the Swedish welfarestate from a long-term perspective, examining restructuring processes from thefinancial crisis of the early 1990s until recent years. This study instead takes a shorttermperspective and focuses on welfare state developments in the post-consolidationphase, after the recovery from the crisis. The aim is to investigate how the fiscalpolicy reforms introduced during the recovery years forced subsequent governmentsto continue on the path of “frugality”. Specifically, the paper focuses on the effectsof austerity politics on two policy domains: income redistribution through the benefitand tax system and the municipalities’ role as social service providers and employers. The analysis indicates that the Swedish model is showing increasing signs ofdualisation due to the gradual segmentation of prior universalistic welfare programmesand to the worsening of working conditions in the social service sector.

  • The Emergence of a Swedish Underclass? Welfare State Restructuring, Income Inequality and Residential Segregation in Malmö, 1991-2008
  • 2013
  • In: Economia & Lavoro. - Rom (Italien) : Carocci editore. - 0012-978X .- 1827-8949. ; XLVII:2, s. 121-138
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Recent political and academic debates in Sweden have been dominated by a view of urban problems as endogenously generated by the spatial concentration of individuals with similar ethnic and socioeconomic characteristics within the same neighbourhoods. The impact of welfare state retrenchment on income inequality and residential segregation instead remained an under-investigated and somehow neglected issue in recent research. This paper aims at filling this gap by analyzing income inequality dynamics in Malmö in the period 1991-2008. This city offers an interesting case of analysis, given the high rates of social problems compared to other Swedish cities. The results reveal that the increase in income inequality in Malmö has been especially due to the reduced redistributive impact of the Swedish welfare state. Furthermore, the increase in residential segregation by income can be attributed to the parallel increase in city-wide income inequality rather than to an alleged increase in neighbourhood sorting.

  • A measurement of the branching fractions of the b-quark into charged and neutral b-hadrons
  • 2003
  • In: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 576:1-2, s. 29-42
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The production fractions of charged and neutral b-hadrons in b-quark events from Z(0) decays have been measured with the DELPHI detector at LEP. An algorithm has been developed, based on a neural network, to estimate the charge of the weakly-decaying b-hadron by distinguishing its decay products from particles produced at the primary vertex. From the data taken in the years 1994 and 1995, the fraction of (b) over bar -quarks fragmenting into positively charged weakly-decaying b-hadrons has been measured to be: f(+) = (42.09+/-0.82(stat)+/-0.89(syst))%. Subtracting the rates for charged Xi(b)(+) and Omega(b)(+) baryons gives the production fraction of B+ mesons: f(Bu) = (40.99+/-0.82(stat)+/-1.11 (syst)) %.

  • Determination of the e(+)e(-)->gamma gamma(gamma) cross-section at LEP 2
  • 2004
  • In: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 37:4, s. 405-419
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A test of the benchmark QED process e(+) e(-) -->gammagamma(gamma) is reported, using the data collected with the DELPHI detector at LEP 2. The data analysed were recorded at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 161 GeV to 208 GeV and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 656.4 pb(-1). The Born cross-section for the process e(+) e(-)-->gammagamma(gamma) was determined, confirming the validity of QED at the highest energies ever attained in electron-positron collisions. Lower limits on the parameters of a number of possible deviations from QED, predicted within theoretical frameworks expressing physics beyond the Standard Model, were derived.

  • Flavour independent searchesfor hadronically decaying neutral Higgs bosons
  • 2005
  • In: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 44:2, s. 147-159
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper describes flavour independent searches for hadronically decaying neutral Higgs bosons in the data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP, at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209 GeV. The collected data-set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of around 610 pb(-1). The e(+)e(-) -> hA and e(+)e(-) -> hZand processes are considered, with direct Higgs boson decays into hadrons. No evidence for Higgs boson production is found, and cross-section limits are set as a function of the Higgs boson masses. No explicit assumptions are made on the underlying physics beyond the Standard Model, allowing interpretation of the data in a large class of models.

  • Rapidity-alignment and p(T) compensation of particle pairs in hadronic Z(0) decays
  • 2002
  • In: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 533:3-4, s. 243-252
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Observation is made of rapidity-alignment of K+K- and (p) over barp pairs which results from their asymmetric orientation in rapidity, with respect to the direction from primary quark to antiquark. The K+K- and (p) over barp data are consistent with predictions from the fragmentation string model. However, the (p) over barp data strongly disagree with the conventional implementation of the cluster model. The non-perturbative process of 'gluon splitting to diquarks' has to be incorporated into the cluster model for it to agree with the data. Local conservation of PT between particles nearby in rapidity (i.e., p(T) compensation) is analysed with respect to the thrust direction for pi(+)pi(-), K+K-, and (p) over barp pairs. In this case, the string model provides fair agreement with the data. The cluster model is incompatible with the data for all three particle pairs. The model with its central premiss of isotropically-decaying clusters predicts a p(T) correlation not seen in the data. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Search for eta(b) in two-photon collisions at LEP II with the DELPHI detector
  • 2006
  • In: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 634:4, s. 340-346
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The pseudoscalar meson eta(b) has been searched for in two-photon interactions at LEP II. The data sample corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 617 pb(-1) at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 161 to 209 GeV. Upper limits at a confidence level of 95% on the product Gamma(gamma gamma) (eta(b)) x BR(eta(b)) are 190, 470 and 660 eV/c(2) for the eta(b) decaying into 4, 6 and 8 charged particles, respectively.
