  • Holding up the Aegis : On the construction of social roles by Polish IT-professionals
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Tamara Journal. - 1532-5555 .- 1545-6420. ; 9:1-2, s. 75-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper takes up the self-construction of the social roles of Polish IT professionals. Weconducted an ethnographic study and observed that many of our interviewees defined theirroles by negation and by invoking the internal and often hermetic aspects of theirprofession. Labeling this practice “holding up the shield,” we trace its archetypical roots. The recurrent use of this practice makes a change in agency in the process of constructingthe role possible, to the benefit of the IT professionals.

  • Narratives of irony and failure in ethnographic work
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Canadian Journal of the Administrative Sciences. - : Wiley. - 0825-0383 .- 1936-4490. ; 27:4, s. 335-347
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organizational ethnography is one of the most valued approaches to qualitative studies of organizations. Much attention has been given to the development of the research process, of which the researcher's identity is an integral part. However, we believe that the analysis of research failures has been much less developed in the discourse of ethnographic methods for the study of organizations. Therefore, we have explored some of the "slips" in ethnographic work, as described in accounts of fellow organizational anthropologists. As the study is qualitative, we have adopted a narrative research method. We have divided the "slips" (i.e., errors) into four categories important for the ethnographer's identity: (a) one's role; (b) one's project, (c) one's relation to "the Other"; and (d) the social context of the slip.

  • Experiencing the shadow : Organizational exclusion and denial within experience economy
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Organization. - : SAGE Publications. - 1350-5084 .- 1461-7323. ; 17:2, s. 257-282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on the dark and hidden aspects of experience economy events. These aspects are framed as the shadow in the Jungian sense, i.e. an archetype of the unconscious domain. Individuals and organizations create a shadow as a side effect of attempts at control and ordering of their identity. The article presents stories based on ethnographically inspired field studies of experience economy events to show how staged experience produces an experiential shadow side. The process is problematized and reflected upon as a shadow producing side effect of identity production and management in experience economy settings. The possibilities for the integration of the shadow into the normal operation of experience economy organizations are considered with the help of images of the carnival and the archetype the fool. The acceptance of the paradoxical and strange side of such events they may be better understood and their dark side integrated.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Problemy Zarzadzania. - 1644-9584 .- 2300-8792. ; 32:2, s. 5-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Drinking  from the waters of Lethe : A tale of organizational oblivion
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Management Learning. - : Sage. - 1350-5076 .- 1461-7307. ; 41:2, s. 187-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is a reflection on organizational oblivion, viewed as an archetypical antonym of learning. The consequences of this kind of forgetting for organizational identity construction are described as a narrative project. We refer to the image of Lethe, an archetype of forgetting, to depict how forgetting directly affects the process of identity narrative construction. In this perspective, drinking from the waters of Lethe implies not just the loss of knowledge or memories of how things are done, but the loss of identity so that the individuals do not know who they are anymore. In this context, forgetting disrupts organizational narrative which ceases to be a coherent story and results in organizational identity loss.
