  • Attribute-based encryption with enforceable obligations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cryptographic Engineering. - Heidelberg : Springer. - 2190-8508 .- 2190-8516. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Attribute-based encryption (ABE) is a cryptographic mechanism that provides fine-grained access control to encrypted data, which can thus be stored in, e.g., public clouds. However, ABE schemes lack the notion of obligations, which is common in attribute-based access control systems such as eXtensible Access Control Markup Language and Usage Control. Obligations are used to define and enforce extra constraints that happen before approving or denying an access request. In this paper, we propose OB-ABE, a system for extending any classical ABE with enforceable obligations. Our system architecture has as core component trusted hardware enclaves, implemented with SGX, used for enforcing obligations. We employ ProVerif to formally model OB-ABE and verify its main property called "enforceable obligations," i.e., if a message is encrypted along with an obligation, then the message can be decrypted only after enforcing the attached obligation. OB-ABE has two more properties: (i) OB-ABE is a "conservative extension" of the underlying ABE scheme, preserving its security properties; (ii) OB-ABE is "backward compatible" in the sense that any ciphertext produced by an ABE scheme can be decrypted by its extended OB-ABE version, and moreover, a ciphertext produced by an OB-ABE scheme can be decrypted by its underlying ABE scheme provided that the ciphertext does not have obligations attached. We also implement in C using Intel SGX a prototype of an OB-ABE extending the well-known ciphertext-policy ABE.

  • Experience of living with a family member with bipolar disorder.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International journal of mental health nursing. - Richmond : Wiley. - 1447-0349 .- 1445-8330. ; 20:1, s. 29-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe illness that has a serious impact on the lives of those affected and on their families. The aim of this study was to elucidate what it means for family members to live with an adult person who has BD, with reference to their views concerning the condition of the person affected and the future. During 2005, 17 family members of people with the disorder were interviewed, and the data obtained were subjected to a qualitative content analysis. The findings showed that family members felt alone with their experiences and struggled to make sense of and to maintain normality, as their life was encroached on by the condition. Bearing the burden of responsibility and control made it difficult for family members to focus on their own future. To build hope, they needed opportunities to share their experiences with others, increased understanding of the condition, and relief from the burden they bore. This study underlines the importance of strengthening support holistically for family members living with an adult person with BD. Support and interventions concerning these families' needs have to be developed and should be provided by all mental health-care services.

  • Outcomes of an educational intervention for the family of a person with bipolar disorder : a 2-year follow-up study
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing. - Chichester : Wiley. - 1351-0126 .- 1365-2850. ; 18:4, s. 333-341
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to analyse the outcomes of an educational intervention for family members living with a person with bipolar disorder. A longitudinal study was conducted comprising a 10-session educational intervention designed for families with members in outpatient mental health care. Thirty-four family members agreed to participate. Data were collected on five occasions, at baseline and during a 2-year follow-up through self-assessment instruments: the Carers of Older People in Europe Index, the Jalowiec Coping Scale-40, the Sense of Coherence questionnaire and the Social Adaptation Self-evaluation Scale. The results showed that the condition had a considerable negative impact on the family members as carers, but the educational intervention increased their understanding, which facilitated the management of their lives. A significant improvement in stress management was seen over time and social functioning was retained. The study showed that families living with one member with bipolar disorder benefited from the educational intervention in terms of increasing understanding of the condition and reducing stress. Mental health care needs to develop educational interventions further and offer the families support to strengthen their ability to manage with the situation.

  • Community-Level Analysis of psbA Gene Sequences and Irgarol Tolerance in Marine Periphyton
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Applied and Environmental Microbiology. - Washington, D.C. : American Society for Microbiology. - 0099-2240 .- 1098-5336. ; 75:4, s. 897-906
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study analyzes psbA gene sequences, predicted D1 protein sequences, species relative abundance, and pollution-induced community tolerance in marine periphyton communities exposed to the antifouling compound Irgarol 1051. The mechanism of action of Irgarol is the inhibition of photosynthetic electron transport at photosystem II by binding to the D1 protein. The metagenome of the communities was used to produce clone libraries containing fragments of the psbA gene encoding the D1 protein. Community tolerance was quantified with a short-term test for the inhibition of photosynthesis. The communities were established in a continuous flow of natural seawater through microcosms with or without added Irgarol. The selection pressure from Irgarol resulted in an altered species composition and an inducted community tolerance to Irgarol. Moreover, there was a very high diversity in the psbA gene sequences in the periphyton, and the composition of psbA and D1 fragments within the communities was dramatically altered by increased Irgarol exposure. Even though tolerance to this type of compound in land plants often depends on a single amino acid substitution (Ser(264)-> Gly) in the D1 protein, this was not the case for marine periphyton species. Instead, the tolerance mechanism likely involves increased degradation of D1. When we compared sequences from low and high Irgarol exposure, differences in nonconserved amino acids were found only in the so-called PEST region of D1, which is involved in regulating its degradation. Our results suggest that environmental contamination with Irgarol has led to selection for high-turnover D1 proteins in marine periphyton communities at the west coast of Sweden.

  • Wind Turbine Noise Propagation over Flat Ground: Measurements and Predictions
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Acta Acustica united with Acustica. - Stuttgart : S. Hirzel Verlag. - 1610-1928 .- 1861-9959. ; 96:4, s. 753-760(8)
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Noise from wind turbines is of concern in the planning process of new wind farms, and accurate estimations of immission noise levels at residents nearby are required. Sound propagation from wind turbine to receiver could be modelled by a simplified standard model assuming constant meteorological conditions, by an engineering method taking atmospheric and ground propagation conditions into account, or by a more exact model. Epidemiological studies have found a higher frequency of annoyance due to wind turbine noise than to other community noise sources at equal noise levels, indicating that the often used simplified model is not sufficient. This paper evaluates the variation of immission sound levels under the influence of meteorological variation and explores if the prediction of levels could be improved by taking the effect of wind speed on sound propagation into account. Long-term sound recordings and measurements at a distance of 530 m from a wind turbine show that the simplified standard model predicts the average sound pressure levels satisfactorily under downwind conditions, and that a more complex propagation model might not be needed for wind turbine noise at a relatively short distance. Large variations of sound immission levels at the same wind speed were however present. Statistical analysis revealed that these variations were influenced by meteorological parameters, such as temperature, static pressure and deviation from ideal downwind direction. The overall results indicate that meteorological factors influence the noise generated by the wind turbine rather than the sound propagation.

  • Incumbents’ responses to disruptive business model innovation: the moderating role of technology vs. market-driven innovation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1741-5098 .- 1368-275X. ; 18:4, s. 289-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Current research argues that incumbents should respond to disruptive innovation by setting up a separate business unit. This recommendation stems from research predominantly carried out on disruptive technologies in high-tech industries but whether incumbents respond differently to other types of disruptive business model innovations and whether the type of response leads to a difference in performance have not been empirically analysed. By collecting data from 88 strategic business units (SBUs) and dividing the sample into incumbents responding to disruptive technology against those responding to disruptive market-driven innovations, the study shows that the latter type of firms can succeed in managing both disruptive and sustaining innovations without setting up structurally separated business units. We discuss the implications of our results and highlight areas for further research.

  • Towards Structured Evaluation of Deep Neural Network Supervisors
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2019 IEEE International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Testing, AITest 2019. - New York : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781728104928 ; 1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deep Neural Networks (DNN) have improved the quality of several non-safety related products in the past years. However, before DNNs should be deployed to safety-critical applications, their robustness needs to be systematically analyzed. A common challenge for DNNs occurs when input is dissimilar to the training set, which might lead to high confidence predictions despite proper knowledge of the input. Several previous studies have proposed to complement DNNs with a supervisor that detects when inputs are outside the scope of the network. Most of these supervisors, however, are developed and tested for a selected scenario using a specific performance metric. In this work, we emphasize the need to assess and compare the performance of supervisors in a structured way. We present a framework constituted by four datasets organized in six test cases combined with seven evaluation metrics. The test cases provide varying complexity and include data from publicly available sources as well as a novel dataset consisting of images from simulated driving scenarios. The latter we plan to make publicly available. Our framework can be used to support DNN supervisor evaluation, which in turn could be used to motive development, validation, and deployment of DNNs in safety-critical applications.

  • Restless Capitalism and the economizing entrepreneur
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Economics of Innovation and New Technology. - Abingdon : Informa UK Limited. - 1476-8364 .- 1043-8599. ; 22:7, s. 684-701
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explains why capitalistic economies are restless by focusing on the role and the activities by entrepreneurs. The linkage between the entrepreneur and the economy is that as knowledge is a scarce resource, entrepreneurs must economize knowledge to reduce uncertainty if they are to undertake entrepreneurial action. Fortunately, ways of lowering uncertainty are important sources of opportunities for entrepreneurs. How- ever, the exploitation of such sources may in turn increase uncertainty in the economy. Thus, entrepreneurial action reduces and regenerates uncertainty and complexity over time across different dimensions in the economic system. The paper argues that these processes are core mechanisms of economic development, creating interdependencies between the entrepreneur and the economic system.

  • The teaching and societal services nexus: Academics’ experiences in three disciplines
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Teaching in Higher Education. - Abingdon, Oxon : Informa UK Limited. - 1356-2517 .- 1470-1294. ; 20:2, s. 208-220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate the perception of academics regarding how their experiences from societal interaction (third mission) inform their teaching and vice versa. We report on a phone survey of Swedish academics in three engineering-related disciplines. The findings show that there is a perceived positive and bidirectional relationship between societal interaction and teaching. Industry-related activities were perceived to inform teaching more than other types of societal interaction. While societal interaction is at large more important for the academics in their search for relevant teaching topics and content, teaching was deemed more important for the implementation of societal interaction. We conclude by proposing that academics creatively (re)combine experiences from third mission and education, often mediated by their research activities.
