  • Global Development, ICT4D, Education for All
  • 2012
  • In:
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Global development has the mission to promote social change and renewal in developing countries on a scientific basis. For this purpose the paper presents a concept for creating five good circles for society building of poor communities. This concept is further elaborated and discussed in terms of sustainability development and sustainable information systems. For one of the good circles “active learning” we illustrate how a deliberate use of tools for ICT4D (ICT for Development) can support special education for needy children and exposed mothers. Our knowledge interest is to set-up professional training spaces, called Community Children Academy Spaces (CAS), grounded on an Edducation For All (EFA) perspective for social inclusion of poor people in civil societies.

  • Valuation of Traffic-Noise Abatements
  • 2005
  • In: Journal of Housing and the Built Environment. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1566-4910 .- 1573-7772. ; 20:2, s. 129-151
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the economic consequences of an investment in traffic-noise abatement. Two hypotheses are tested: first, a noise barrier has a positive capitalization effect on the values of single-family houses; second, there is a difference in capitalization rate between houses close to and remote from the road. Both hypotheses are verified. The benefits have been estimated by analyzing prices of houses that have been sold more than once; that is the repeated-sales method (RSM). The repeated-sales model has been tested for sample selection bias and the implicit assumption about parameter constancy over time. The total benefit to the stock of houses has been estimated and compared with the total cost. I conclude that in this case, public investment in a traffic-noise barrier can be clearly justified.

  • Effect of lactobacilli on paracellular permeability in the gut.
  • 2011
  • In: Nutrients. - : MDPI AG. - 2072-6643. ; 3:1, s. 104-117
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Paracellular permeability is determined by the complex structures of junctions that are located between the epithelial cells. Already in 1996, it was shown that the human probiotic strain Lactobacillus plantarum 299v and the rat-originating strain Lactobacillus reuteri R2LC could reduce this permeability in a methotrexate-induced colitis model in the rat. Subsequently, many animal models and cell culture systems have shown indications that lactobacilli are able to counteract increased paracellular permeability evoked by cytokines, chemicals, infections, or stress. There have been few human studies focusing on the effect of lactobacilli on intestinal paracellular permeability but recently it has been shown that they could influence the tight junctions. More precisely, short-term administration of L. plantarum WCSF1 to healthy volunteers increased the relocation of occludin and ZO-1 into the tight junction area between duodenal epithelial cells.

  • Optimisation of occupational radiological protection in image-guided interventions: potential impact of dose rate measurements.
  • 2015
  • In: Journal of radiological protection : official journal of the Society for Radiological Protection. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6498. ; 35:1, s. 47-62
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The optimisation of occupational radiological protection is challenging and a variety of factors have to be considered. Physicians performing image-guided interventions are working in an environment with one of the highest radiation risk levels in healthcare. Appropriate knowledge about the radiation environment is a prerequisite for conducting the optimisation process. Information about the dose rate variation during the interventions could provide valuable input to this process. The overall purpose of this study was to explore the prerequisite and feasibility to measure dose rate in scattered radiation and to assess the usefulness of such data in the optimisation process.Using an active dosimeter system, the dose rate in the unshielded scattered radiation field was measured in a fixed point close to the patient undergoing an image-guided intervention. The measurements were performed with a time resolution of one second and the dose rate data was continuously timed in a data log. In two treatment rooms, data was collected during a 6month time period, resulting in data from 380 image-guided interventions and vascular treatments in the abdomen, arms and legs. These procedures were categorised into eight types according to the purpose of the treatment and the anatomical region involved. The dose rate varied substantially between treatment types, both regarding the levels and the distribution during the procedure. The maximum dose rate for different types of interventions varied typically between 5 and 100mSvh(-1), but substantially higher and lower dose rates were also registered. The average dose rate during a complete procedure was however substantially lower and varied typically between 0.05 and 1mSvh(-1). An analysis of the distribution disclosed that for a large part of the treatment types, the major amount of the total accumulated dose for a procedure was delivered in less than 10% of the exposure time and in less than 1% of the total procedure time. The present study shows that systematic dose rate measurements are feasible. Such measurements can be used to give a general indication of the exposure level to the staff and could serve as a first risk assessment tool when introducing new treatment types or x-ray equipment in the clinic. For example, it could provide an indication for when detailed eye dose measurements are needed. It also gives input to risk management considerations and the development of efficient routines for other radiological protection measures.

  • Survey of channel and radio propagation models for wireless MIMO systems
  • 2007
  • In: Eurasip Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1687-1472 .- 1687-1499. ; 2007
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper provides an overview of the state-of- the-art radio propagation and channel models for wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We distinguish between physical models and analytical models and discuss popular examples from both model types. Physical models focus on the double-directional propagation mechanisms between the location of transmitter and receiver without taking the antenna configuration into account. Analytical models capture physical wave propagation and antenna configuration simultaneously by describing the impulse response (equivalently, the transfer function) between the antenna arrays at both link ends. We also review some MIMO models that are included in current standardization activities for the purpose of reproducible and comparable MIMO system evaluations. Finally, we describe a couple of key features of channels and radio propagation which are not sufficiently included in current MIMO models. Copyright c 2007 P. Almers et al. • Virtual versus Physical : The Future?
  • 1996
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In organisational science, new organisational concepts such as business process re-engineering and virtual organisations are developed. These new types of organisation have more advanced and different requirements on their information technology (IT) support, since the relation between the organisation and its IT system is much tighter for these organisation types. We disucss potential problems of traditional IT approaches in these organisations. As an alternative, we propose a different perspective on the role of IT, i.e., we view the organisation as consisting of a physical and a virtual layer that both are active, equally important and contain models of each other.

  • Brill's Encyclopedia of Sikhism, Volume 1 : History, Literature, Society, Beyond Punjab
  • 2017
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Sikhism is one of the most important religious traditions of South Asian origin.Sikhs are historically connected to the Punjab region in South Asia, but their religious traditions are transnational and have a worldwide presence. The study of their history and traditions has become a significant field of scholarship and research, but no academic, authoritative, and up-to-date reference work exists. Brill’s Encyclopedia of Sikhism aims to make available in-depth critical scholarship on all the main aspects of the Sikh traditions in a number of original essays written by the world's foremost scholars on Sikhs and Sikh traditions. The encyclopedia is thematic and seeks to present a balanced and impartial view of the Sikh traditions in all their multiplicity and as both historical and contemporary institutions. The articles, published in two volumes, focus on history, literature, and the rich social landscape of the Sikh community; their practices, places, arts, and performances; specialists and leadership; migration both within South Asia and beyond; and contemporary issues and relations.
