  • An adaptive array for mobile communication systems

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The use of adaptive antenna techniques to increase the channel capacity is discussed. Directional sensitivity is obtained by using an antenna array at the base station, possibly both in receiving and transmitting modes. A scheme for separating several signals at the same frequency is proposed. The method is based on high-resolution direction-finding followed by optimal combination of the antenna outputs. Comparison with a method based on reference signals is made. Computer simulations are carried out to test the applicability of the technique to scattering scenarios that typically arise in urban areas. The proposed scheme is found to have great potential in rejecting cochannel interference, albeit at the expense of high computational requirements.

  • Robust Signal Parameter Estimation in the Presence of Array Perturbations
  • 1991
  • In: Proc. of 1991 International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 1991. ICASSP-91.. - Linköping : IEEE. ; , s. 3277-3280
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Signal parameter estimators which are less sensitive to perturbations in the array manifold are presented. A parametrized stochastic model for the array uncertainties is introduced. The unknown array parameters can include the individual gain and phase responses of the sensors as well as their positions. Based on this model, a maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator is formulated. This results in a fairly complex optimization problem which is computationally expensive. The MAP estimator is simplified by exploiting properties of the weighted subspace fitting method. An approximate method that further reduces the complexity is also presented, assuming smallarray perturbations. A compact expression for the MAP Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) on the signal and arrayparameter estimates is derived. A simulation study indicates that the proposed robust estimation procedures achieve the MAP-CRB even for moderate sample sizes.

  • Estimation of Residence Time in Continuous Flow Systems with Dynamics
  • 1994
  • In: Proceedings of the 10th IFAC Symposium on System Identification. - Linköping : Linköping University. ; , s. 401-406
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A method for estimation of residence time in continuous flow systems with varying dynamics is presented. By resampling, i.e., choosing time instants different from the given sampling instants, and interpolation between measured data points, we obtain a continuous flow system with constant residence time expressed in the new resampled time vector. We assume the flow patterns in the systems are invariant. The new data set is then used for identification of parameters in a chosen model structure. From the identified model, the residence time is readily calculated and a procedure for that is briefly described. The presented method is readily extended to enable use in recursive identification. In that case, however, as an improvement of tracking ability of an ordinary recursive routine.

  • Tyr-716 in the platelet-derived growth factor beta-receptor kinase insertis involved in GRB2 binding and Ras activation
  • 1994
  • In: Molecular and Cellular Biology. - : American Society for Microbiology. - 0270-7306 .- 1098-5549. ; 14:10, s. 6715-6726
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Ligand stimulation of the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) beta-receptor leads to activation of its intrinsic tyrosine kinase and autophosphorylation of the intracellular part of the receptor. The autophosphorylated tyrosine residues mediate interactions with downstream signal transduction molecules and thereby initiate different signalling pathways. A pathway leading to activation of the GTP-binding protein Ras involves the adaptor molecule GRB2. Here we show that Tyr-716, a novel autophosphorylation site in the PDGF beta-receptor kinase insert, mediates direct binding of GRB2 in vitro and in vivo. In a panel of mutant PDGF beta-receptors, in which Tyr-716 and the previously known autophosphorylation sites were individually mutated, only PDGFR beta Y716F failed to bind GRB2. Furthermore, a synthetic phosphorylated peptide containing Tyr-716 bound GRB2, and this peptide specifically interrupted the interaction between GRB2 and the wild-type receptor. In addition, the Y716(P) peptide significantly decreased the amount of GTP bound to Ras in response to PDGF in permeabilized fibroblasts as well as in porcine aortic endothelial cells expressing transfected PDGF beta-receptors. The mutant PDGFR beta Y716F still mediated activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases and an increased DNA synthesis in response to PDGF, indicating that multiple signal transduction pathways transduce mitogenic signals from the activated PDGF beta-receptor.
