  • The shift from Geopolitics to Geoeconomics and the failure of our modern Social Sciences
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Geoeconomics is gradually replacing the importance of Geopolitics. The transition is marked by the start of the process we call Globalization , about two decades old now, but still in its infancy, when government and government institutions discovered that they no longer were self-evident key actors and watchmen of world events . The process is an effect of the end of the Cold War and marks a strategic shift from political ideologies to economic realities. For decades fellow economists have praised the value of public and private borrowing, the production of services at the expense of the production of goods and they have underestimated the importance of trade surpluses for the Competitive Advantage of Nations. They have done so because they have failed to see what makes a nation, a region or a city wealthy in the long run. We have developed a social science paradigm at our universities which have undermined our own development. At the same time we have disregarded much of the tradition for critical thinking, as implied in Critical Theory but more fundamentally as understood for centuriesThe study of all living organisms is now studied with the use of Evolutionary Theory; except for the study of Man. We must start to ask ourselves why. Why should the Social Sciences be any different than Zoology in this respect, unless we say that Man stands outside of biology?

  • A business process metadata model for a process model repository
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Enterprise, Business-Process and Information Systems Modeling. - Berlin : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642130519 - 9783642130502 ; , s. 287-300
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today reuse of business process models is becoming increasingly important. One of the proven solutions for reusing business process models is the use of repositories. Repositories should have process models and process metadata that can help users in searching, understanding, and interpreting process models. The purpose of this paper is to propose a Business Process Metadata Model (BPMM) that would facilitate a) locating process models, b) understanding and/or interpreting process models, and c) navigating a process model repository. In order to evaluate the BPMM, an empirical study is conducted to measure consistency and correctness of annotating business processes by using BPMM.

  • Robots and systems as autonomous ethical agents
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: INTECH 2010. - Bangkok : Assumption University. - 9789746151108 ; , s. 5-9
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IT systems and robots can help us to solve many problems caused by the quantity, variation and complexity of information; because we need to handle dangerous and risky situations; or because of our social and emotional needs like elderly care. In helping us, these systems have to make decisions and act accordingly to achieve the goals for which they were built. Ethical decision support tools can be integrated into robots and other decision making systems to secure that decisions are made according to the basic theories of philosophy and to the findings of psychological research.  This can be done, in non-independent systems, as a way for the system to report to its operator, and to support the operator's ethical decision making. On the other hand, fully independent systems should be able to regulate their own decision making strategies and processes. However, this cannot be based on normative predefined criteria, or on the ability to make choices, or on having own control, or on ability of rational processing.  It seems that it is necessary for an independent robot or decision system to have "emotions." That is, a kind of ultimate purposes that can lead the decision process, and depending on the circumstances, guide the adoption of a decision strategy, whatever it may be, rational, heuristic or automatic.

  • Ecology and the accumulation of capital : thinking capitalism through the web of life
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Capitalism as world-ecology is an effort to move from the “environmental history of” capitalism, or modernity, or the world market, to capitalism AS environmental history. Financial crises, for instance, are not social or economic crises that make their footprint on the rest of nature; they are crises of a key moment of capitalism’s symbolic and material ordering of the relation between humans and the rest of nature. This dialectical alternative views the great movements of modern world history – industrial and agricultural revolutions, successive new imperialisms, the development of the world market – as socio-ecological projects and processes, aimed at reconfiguring nature-society relations. ‘Nature,’ no longer a passive substance upon which humanity leaves its footprint, becomes an active bundle of relations, formed and re-formed through the historically- and geographically-specific movements of humans, with the rest of nature. This entails more than a catalogue of capitalism’s biophysical depredations. It calls for new synthesis that locates the accumulation of capital, the production of nature, and pursuit of power in a singular and differentiated whole. This perspective begins from the premise that capitalism does not act upon nature so much as develop through nature-society relations. Capitalism does not have an ecological regime; it is an ecological regime.

  • MANAGING SUPPLY CHAIN INTERFACES A framework towards an integrated logistics platform
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Nofoma conference, 2011, Harstad, Norway.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose of this paper -The purpose of this paper is to explore current interfaces between major member-firms in port organisations and to develop a framework to integrate these member-firms through better management of interfaces.Design/methodology/approach -To prepare this paper, a structured literature review was conducted together with multi-case studies. To analyse the data, a theoretical interface model was used as a basis to define and describe different natures of interfaces. This enabled the development of a framework towards an integrated logistics platform.Findings -The research shows that successful companies will be those that are able to manage supply chain interfaces efficiently. These interfaces revealed by the study are: media, transfer, data and information, control and communication, and user interfaces. The framework demonstrates these types of interfaces and helps facilitate better integration between ports’ member-firms in supply chains.Practical implications (if applicable) - The paper provides a framework for understanding current interfaces between major member-firms in port organisations and may be a useful insight for firms wishing to enhance supply chain integration. What is original/value of paper -The idea behind the study is to contribute to a better understanding of integration issues within the maritime supply chain through a structured literature review and multi-case studies that lead to better management of supply chain interfaces.

  • Information Technology, democratic societies and competitive markets
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: An information law for the 21st Century. - Athens : Nomiki Vivliothiki.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Access of relevant information, or knowledge, is a necessary condition for finding the right solution to a problem or making the right decision. Such information triggers and maintains the psychological and societal processes lying behind the achievement of important aims for individuals and groups. Democracy demands dialog, but dialog is not possible among citizens who are totally convinced about the truth of their ideas. A participant in a dialog must have a critical attitude toward own beliefs, otherwise a common search for a better decision is not possible. IT tools can train and support unconstrained, self-critical, systematic and holistic problem solving, decision and law making. Competitive markets, like democratic societies, need access to information. Whereas well organized and strong players can guarantee it more or less for themselves the same is very difficult for consumers to achieve, like it is for citizens regarding political information. IT can easily provide information about prices, quality and other relevant aspects of products and services in the market. However, the available form, content and amount of information in the market or in politics, which are controlled by the strongest stakeholders, have as their main goal to constrain systematic and critical thinking. Therefore to take advantage of IT’s features in developing better markets and political procedures it is necessary to create rules that can guarantee it.

  • The hen or the egg? : IT innovations’ influence on business strategy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Nordic Academy of Management conference 2011. - : Gotland University. ; , s. 1-18
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The literature on business strategy and management control often underscores the necessity that companies, in their strategic processes, strive to first set goals and strategies and thereafter conduct investments in organization and technologies. However, some scholars argue that IT enables and induces strategic change and that these changes are necessary in order to gain value from the investment. Based on extensive empirical studies of the Swedish graphic industry this paper elaborates on the connection between strategy development and IT utilization. The conclusions are based on a longitudinal study of the graphic industry (1980-2010), a complete study of all annual reports from the two market leaders in the industry (1984-2010) and a complete study of all board meeting protocols in a newspaper and printing company (1971-1989). One conclusion is that there is greater awareness about the implications of IT on the business and the industry than the companies manage to translate in to action. Another conclusion is that the strategic orientation of the owners affects the execution of the IT strategy in the operating units.
