  • ASSERT : A Blockchain-Based Architectural Approach for Engineering Secure Self-Adaptive IoT Systems
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - basel : MDPI. - 1424-8220. ; 22:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internet of Things (IoT) systems are complex systems that can manage mission-critical, costly operations or the collection, storage, and processing of sensitive data. Therefore, security represents a primary concern that should be considered when engineering IoT systems. Additionally, several challenges need to be addressed, including the following ones. IoT systems’ environments are dynamic and uncertain. For instance, IoT devices can be mobile or might run out of batteries, so they can become suddenly unavailable. To cope with such environments, IoT systems can be engineered as goal-driven and self-adaptive systems. A goal-driven IoT system is composed of a dynamic set of IoT devices and services that temporarily connect and cooperate to achieve a specific goal. Several approaches have been proposed to engineer goal-driven and self-adaptive IoT systems. However, none of the existing approaches enable goal-driven IoT systems to automatically detect security threats and autonomously adapt to mitigate them. Toward bridging these gaps, this paper proposes a distributed architectural Approach for engineering goal-driven IoT Systems that can autonomously SElf-adapt to secuRity Threats in their environments (ASSERT). ASSERT exploits techniques and adopts notions, such as agents, federated learning, feedback loops, and blockchain, for maintaining the systems’ security and enhancing the trustworthiness of the adaptations they perform. The results of the experiments that we conducted to validate the approach’s feasibility show that it performs and scales well when detecting security threats, performing autonomous security adaptations to mitigate the threats and enabling systems’ constituents to learn about security threats in their environments collaboratively. © 2022 by the authors.

  • A comparison of machine learning algorithms on design smell detection using balanced and imbalanced dataset : A study of God class
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Information and Software Technology. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0950-5849 .- 1873-6025. ; 143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context: Design smell detection has proven to be a significant activity that has an aim of not only enhancing the software quality but also increasing its life cycle. Objective: This work investigates whether machine learning approaches can effectively be leveraged for software design smell detection. Additionally, this paper provides a comparatively study, focused on using balanced datasets, where it checks if avoiding dataset balancing can be of any influence on the accuracy and behavior during design smell detection. Method: A set of experiments have been conducted-using 28 Machine Learning classifiers aimed at detecting God classes. This experiment was conducted using a dataset formed from 12,587 classes of 24 software systems, in which 1,958 classes were manually validated. Results: Ultimately, most classifiers obtained high performances,-with Cat Boost showing a higher performance. Also, it is evident from the experiments conducted that data balancing does not have any significant influence on the accuracy of detection. This reinforces the application of machine learning in real scenarios where the data is usually imbalanced by the inherent nature of design smells. Conclusions: Machine learning approaches can effectively be used as a leverage for God class detection. While in this paper we have employed SMOTE technique for data balancing, it is worth noting that there exist other methods of data balancing and with other design smells. Furthermore, it is also important to note that application of those other methods may improve the results, in our experiments SMOTE did not improve God class detection. The results are not fully generalizable because only one design smell is studied with projects developed in a single programming language, and only one balancing technique is used to compare with the imbalanced case. But these results are promising for the application in real design smells detection scenarios as mentioned above and the focus on other measures, such as Kappa, ROC, and MCC, have been used in the assessment of the classifier behavior. © 2021 The Authors

  • The Adjuvanted Recombinant Zoster Vaccine Confers Long-Term Protection Against Herpes Zoster : Interim Results of an Extension Study of the Pivotal Phase 3 Clinical Trials ZOE-50 and ZOE-70
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Clinical Infectious Diseases. - : Oxford University Press. - 1058-4838 .- 1537-6591. ; 74:8, s. 1459-1467
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Efficacy against herpes zoster and immune responses to the adjuvanted recombinant zoster vaccine plateaued at high levels between 5.1 and 7.1 years (mean) post-vaccination, suggesting that its clinical benefit in older adults is sustained for at least 7 years post-vaccination. Background This ongoing follow-up study evaluated the persistence of efficacy and immune responses for 6 additional years in adults vaccinated with the glycoprotein E (gE)-based adjuvanted recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) at age >= 50 years in 2 pivotal efficacy trials (ZOE-50 and ZOE-70). The present interim analysis was performed after >= 2 additional years of follow-up (between 5.1 and 7.1 years [mean] post-vaccination) and includes partial data for year (Y) 8 post-vaccination. Methods Annual assessments were performed for efficacy against herpes zoster (HZ) from Y6 post-vaccination and for anti-gE antibody concentrations and gE-specific CD4[2+] T-cell (expressing >= 2 of 4 assessed activation markers) frequencies from Y5 post-vaccination. Results Of 7413 participants enrolled for the long-term efficacy assessment, 7277 (mean age at vaccination, 67.2 years), 813, and 108 were included in the cohorts evaluating efficacy, humoral immune responses, and cell-mediated immune responses, respectively. Efficacy of RZV against HZ through this interim analysis was 84.0% (95% confidence interval [CI], 75.9-89.8) from the start of this follow-up study and 90.9% (95% CI, 88.2-93.2) from vaccination in ZOE-50/70. Annual vaccine efficacy estimates were >84% for each year since vaccination and remained stable through this interim analysis. Anti-gE antibody geometric mean concentrations and median frequencies of gE-specific CD4[2+] T cells reached a plateau at approximately 6-fold above pre-vaccination levels. Conclusions Efficacy against HZ and immune responses to RZV remained high, suggesting that the clinical benefit of RZV in older adults is sustained for at least 7 years post-vaccination.

  • Patient-nurse anesthetist interaction during regional anesthesia and surgery based on video recordings
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Perianesthesia Nursing. - : W.B. Saunders Co.. - 1089-9472 .- 1532-8473. ; 28:5, s. 260-270
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose The purpose of this study was to interpret and describe the patient-nurse anesthetist (NA) interaction during regional anesthesia. Design Video recordings conducted during orthopedic surgery at a surgical clinic in Sweden formed the basis for the study, in which three patients and three NAs participated. Methods A hermeneutic analysis was conducted on the data. Finding The findings of the analysis demonstrated that the NA was in either “present” presence or “absent” presence in the awake patient's visual field during surgery. The NA's professional actions at times dominated the patient's existential being in the intraoperative situation. The findings conveyed insights about the patient-NA interaction that open up possibilities for nurses to understand and reflect upon their own practice in an expanded way. Conclusions Using video recordings for reflections enables development of professional skills that positively influence the care quality for patients during regional anesthesia.

  • Born Digital : Writing Poetry in the Age of New Media
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study investigates Anglophone digital poems, created with and disseminated through digital computer media, for their visual, kinetic, and textual practices. I seek to articulate an analytic method grounded in close readings of selected poems. I have chosen to focus on poetic practices that raise questions about spatiality, temporality, kineticism, and word-and-image construction. My chief interest lies in how poetic form is orchestrated and what forms of engagement these digital constructions present the reader with. Underlying the main arguments of this study is an understanding of literary works in general as materially, culturally, and historically situated entities. Such “attention to material” is brought to bear on the digital poems that I analyze. Building upon N. Katherine Hayles’s notion of a “media-specific analysis,” I propose a materially specific analysis. In line with this proposition, I investigate particular properties of three clusters of poems. I propose terms such poemevents, cinematographic poems, and visual noise poems.A common feature of digital poems is the multisensory experience created through visual, auditive, tactile, kinetic, and textual artifice. The reader’s level of interaction is often of utmost importance. To articulate the different roles that the reader has to take on, I use two compound terms: reader/user and reader/viewer/listener. I argue that the active embodied engagement that is required of the reader/user in some digital poems and the denial of an active participation in others is part of the works’ materiality. Digital poetry as a field is expanding; it would not be too daring to claim that the exploration of the writing of poetry in the age of new media has only begun. I conclude the thesis by looking forward to what might lay ahead, how literary scholarship can be inspired by digital poetic work, and the questions about literary materiality that it poses.

  • Morphing Into New Modes of Writing : John Cayley's riverIsland
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Leonardo Electronic Almanac. - Cambridge, MA : MIT Press. - 1071-4391. ; 14:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today we do not only see the convergence of many modern and postmodern strategies in literature, forming that “difficult whole” McHale enumerates in his work on postmodern long poems, The Obligation Toward a Difficult Whole, but we are also living in an eruption of digital technologies which today are considered by most to be media, and thus called new media. riverIsland, I argue, is a meta-text and a paradigmatic example of new media poetry as instantiation of many different concurrent strategies and traditions (with highly diverse genealogies) which co-exist now. In my reading I focus on the morphing in riverIsland as one of those strategies.

  • Evaluation of the content of a web tool aimed to identify early markers related to fall risk among middle-aged people
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Health and Technology. - : Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland. - 2190-7188 .- 2190-7196. ; 10:6, s. 1571-1578
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today, the health care sector has no test for early age-related deterioration in physical ability. The aim of this study was to evaluate questionnaires, videos and physical tests whose task will be to identify early markers related to an increased fall risk in middle-aged people. If the person is aware of deficits in physical ability related to fall risk, the person can then use that knowledge to perform relevant training that can strengthen the physical ability related to fall risk. Self-efficacy for balance and strength, physical ability related to fall risk and body composition were measured for 36 middle-aged test participants. This study shows that the tested physical exercises were useful for self-assessment of physical ability. Impairment in physical ability could not be identified solely with measurement of body composition, walking speed, questions, videos that show adjustments that are common in people with impaired balance, or an extended version of the Short version of Activities-specific Balance Confidence scale. This study indicates that a combination of questionnaires, videos and physical exercises can evaluate physical ability and act as a method to identify early markers related to increased fall risk. The questionnaire, videos and physical exercises can be implemented in a web tool that could make persons aware that they have decreased physical ability regarding fall risk or that they needlessly make physical compensations when performing daily activities and thus are missing opportunities to strengthen their physical ability every day.

  • Conservation laws for the Maxwell-Dirac equations with dual Ohm's law
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Mathematical Physics. - MELVILLE : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0022-2488 .- 1089-7658. ; 48:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a general theorem on conservation laws for arbitrary differential equations proved by Ibragimov [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 333, 311-320 (2007)], we have derived conservation laws for Dirac's symmetrized Maxwell-Lorentz equations under the assumption that both the electric and magnetic charges obey linear conductivity laws (dual Ohm's law). We find that this linear system allows for conservation laws which are nonlocal in time. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

  • Utilization of photon orbital angular momentum in the low-frequency radio domain
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 99:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show numerically that vector antenna arrays can generate radio beams that exhibit spin and orbital angular momentum characteristics similar to those of helical Laguerre-Gauss laser beams in paraxial optics. For low frequencies (1 GHz), digital techniques can be used to coherently measure the instantaneous, local field vectors and to manipulate them in software. This enables new types of experiments that go beyond what is possible in optics. It allows information-rich radio astronomy and paves the way for novel wireless communication concepts.
