  • Digital hydraulic system using pumps and on/off valves controlling the actuator
  • 2014
  • In: PROCEEDINGS OF THE FPNI PH.D SYMPOSIUM ON FLUID POWER. - : ASME Press. - 9780791845820
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Hydraulic systems employed in several industrial and mobile applications present significant advantages, such as a high power-to-weight ratio and fast dynamic response. However, these systems have low efficiency due to high power dissipation. A recent concept called digital hydraulics comprises particularities that create opportunities for a reduction in load loss. This paper proposes a configuration and control method for actuator speed control based on the principles of digital hydraulics. In this context, several fixed displacement units and on/off valves are connected directly to the actuators without throttling valves. The system studied here presents three operation methods (pump mode, motor mode and idle mode), which allows discrete valves to replace continuous or flow control valves in order to control the actuator. Furthermore, a fixed or variable displacement pump with large displacement is replaced by several small, fixed displacement units. Simulations are performed with a co-simulation technique using AMESim and MATLAB. The actuator speed, inlet and outlet pressures on the fixed displacement units and flow rate in the circuit lines are analysed. Preliminary simulation results exhibit smooth transitions between speed levels, adequate dynamic performance, low power dissipation and high energy-storage capacity. A specific limitation of this technology is the obtained actuator discrete speed. The main contributions of this research are the development of a digital hydraulic system configuration and its control strategy, which allows speed control of hydraulic actuators and provides the capacity to store energy.

  • Young students posing problem‑solving tasks: what does posing a similar task imply to students?
  • 2020
  • In: ZDM - the International Journal on Mathematics Education. - : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 1863-9690 .- 1863-9704. ; 52:4, s. 743-752
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper focuses on problem solving and problem posing in mathematics education with 6-year-olds. After working ona problem-solving activity, the young students were asked to pose a similar task to a friend. This article explores how thestudents interpret the notion of similar. To be able to pose a problem-solving task themselves the students had to changeperspective, from searching for information to providing information, and from searching for a solution to searching for aquestion. Also, to create a similar task the students had to reflect on the original problem-solving task. Thus, their posedtasks shed light on their interpretation of what the original problem-solving task was really about. The results show that thelarge majority of the students included some three-dimensional aspects from the original problem-solving task in their posedtasks. However, the questions they posed varied in terms of whether or not they included mathematical elements.

  • Sensitivity calculations of tunnel fires using CFD
  • 1996
  • In: Fire Technology. - 0015-2684. ; 32:2, s. 99-119
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Detailed numerical simulations of fires in road tunnels were carried out using the CFD code JASMINE. Fire tests performed in the Ofenegg tunnel have also been validated. A parametric study of fires in an arbitrary 300-m-long tunnel was made, in which the influence of fire size, tunnel width, ventilation and ground slope was investigated. The movement of hazardous temperature and smoke regions as a function of time was calculated to investigate escape possibilities from the tunnel in case of fire.

  • Determination of a high-quality nuclear magnetic resonance solution structure of the bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor and comparison with three crystal structures
  • 1992
  • In: Journal of Molecular Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-2836. ; 227, s. 757-775
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A high-quality three-dimensional structure of the bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (BPTI) in aqueous solution was determined by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) spectroscopy and compared to the three available high-resolution X-ray crystal structures. A newly collected input of 642 distance constraints derived from nuclear Overhauser effects and 115 dihedral angle constraints was used for the structure calculations with the program DIANA, followed by restrained energy minimization with the program AMBER. The BPTI solution structure is represented by a group of 20 conformers with an average root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) relative to the mean solution structure of 0.43 A for backbone atoms and 0.92 A for all heavy atoms of residues 2 to 56. The pairwise RMSD values of the three crystal structures relative to the mean solution structure are 0.76 to 0.85 A for the backbone atoms and 1.24 to 1.33 A for all heavy atoms of residues 2 to 56. Small local differences in backbone atom positions between the solution structure and the X-ray structures near residues 9, 25 to 27, 46 to 48 and 52 to 58, and conformational differences for individual amino acid side-chains were analyzed for possible correlations with intermolecular protein-protein contacts in the crystal lattices, using the pairwise RMSD values among the three crystal structures as a reference.

  • Conformal field theory and the solution of the (quantum) elliptic Calogero-Sutherland system
  • 2005
  • In: Noncommutative Geometry and Representation Theory in Mathematical Physics. - Providence, Rhode Island : American Mathematical Society (AMS). - 0821837184 ; , s. 223-240
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We review the construction of a conformal field theory model which describes anyons on a circle and at finite temperature, including previously unpublished results. This anyon model is closely related to the quantum elliptic Calogero-Sutherland (eCS) system. We describe this relation and how it has led to an explicit construction of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the eCS system.

  • Water as method : Explorations of locally situated environmental issues together with preschool children
  • 2019
  • In: Australian Journal of Environmental Education. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 0814-0626 .- 2049-775X. ; 35:3, s. 222-229
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to show how water emerged as a research method nearby and within a small stream during a 9-month fieldwork carried out with preschool children. The fieldwork was informed and shaped by the preschool children’s and researcher’s situated knowledges and their questions about environmental issues concerning water, absence of water, pollution and ethics. The empirical material consists of films and photos, drawings and field notes, produced together by the preschool children and the researcher during the research. The analysis draws on relational ontology and the writings of Isabelle Stengers and Donna Haraway. The article concludes with a discussion about what can be learnt from the study and its contribution to research within the fields of Early Childhood Education and Environmental Education.
