  • Constructing and Construing Written Argumentative and Expository Assignments in L1 and EFL
  • 2014
  • In: AILA World Congress 10-15 August 2014 Brisbane Australia.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This paper presents part of a longitudinal research project investigating 200 Swedish upper secondary students' written academic language in Swedish and English during a period of three years. Eight different writing assignments, designed to correspond with the national curricula for social and natural science, are analysed as choices of genres and text outlines in 1600 student essays.

  • Upper secondary students’ discursive writing in two languages
  • 2020
  • In: Writing & Pedagogy. - : Equinox Publishing. - 1756-5839 .- 1756-5847. ; 12:1, s. 47-71
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This longitudinal study examines one central dimension of discursive essay writing, viz. text structure. It presents results from 40 upper secondary school students’ argumentative and expository texts, four essays in Swedish and four in English (N=320) written during the students’ three years upper-secondary schooling. In addition, three students’ writing progression in eight tasks is presented as cases. The study contributes to the knowledge about upper-secondary school students’ written discursive development in two languages, Swedish (L1) and English (L2). The research is informed by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and the texts were analyzed for logical structure, defined as the cultural norms for clear organization of texts in more academic or formal contexts. The analysis comprised three levels: (1) the global level (text structure in steps and general organization), (2) the paragraph level (paragraphing supporting the global structure), and (3) the linguistic level (language related discursive markers). Based on the analyses of different levels, an overall assessment of logical structure was made. The results show that the progression in terms of text structure largely failed to occur and neither the choice of language or different text types (argumentative and expository texts) shaped students’ ability to structure their text.

  • A nationwide survey of CPR training in Sweden: Foreign born and unemployed are not reached by training programmes.
  • 2006
  • In: Resuscitation. - : Elsevier Ireland Ltd. - 0300-9572 .- 1873-1570. ; :70, s. 90-97
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • AIM: To determine the number of CPR trained adults in Sweden, and the willingness of the non-trained population to attend a CPR course. An additional purpose was to investigate differences related to sex, age, residential area, socio-economic classification and country of origin. METHODS: Five thousand adults in Sweden were surveyed, which yielded 3167 valid responses, a response rate of 63%. The sample was selected at random and stratified to correlate to the geographic distribution of the population. RESULTS: The mean (S.D.) age was 46 (16) years, 54% of the respondents were females and 11% were people of foreign origin. Forty-five percent had participated in some form of CPR training. Younger respondents, those living in rural areas, those born in Sweden, employees, students and military conscripts were trained more frequently in CPR. Of the respondents with no CPR training, 50% expressed a willingness to attend a course. The most common reason for not being trained in CPR was that the respondent did not know such courses existed or that they did not know where to go for training. CONCLUSION: Somewhere between 30 and 45% of the adult population of Sweden had participated in CPR training. Half of the non-trained population was willing to learn CPR but frequently did not know that such courses existed or where they were held. Elderly people, people of foreign origin, or those not included in the workforce were less likely to have participated in CPR training.

  • Structures of Solvated Cations of Palladium(II) and Platinum(II) in Dimethyl Sulfoxide, Acetonitrile and Aqueous Solution Studied by EXAFS and LAXS
  • 1991
  • In: Acta Chemica Scandinavica. - : Danish Chemical Society. - 0904-213X. ; 45:5, s. 449-455
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • X-Ray absorption edge and EXAFS spectra of the solvated cations of platinum(II) in water, dimethyl sulfoxide and acetonitrile and of palladium(II) in dimethyl sulfoxide have been recorded and analyzed. The cations are four-coordinated. Pt-O in Pt(H2O)4(2+) is 2.01(1) angstrom and Pt-N in Pt(CH3CN)4(2+) is 2.00(1) angstrom. The dimethyl sulfoxide solvated cations of both platinum and palladium contain two sulfur- and two oxygen-bonded ligands with Pt-O 2.07(2), Pt-S 2.21(2), Pd-O 2.04(2), and Pd-S 2.23(2) angstrom, probably in a square-planar cis-arrangement, as in the solid state. Large-angle X-ray scattering (LAXS) studies of the platinum(II) dimethyl sulfoxide solvated cation in a solution of the triflate salt gave Pt-O 2.07(1) and Pt-S 2.20(1) angstrom and in a solution of the tetrafluoroborate salt Pt-O 2.07(2) and Pt-S 2.21(5) angstrom, in good agreement with the EXAFS results. Neither technique gave any support for axially bound solvent molecules in addition to the four in the assumed square coordination plane.
