  • The negative footprint illusion is exacerbated by the numerosity of environment-friendly additions: unveiling the underpinning mechanisms

    • The addition of environmentally friendly items to conventional items sometimes leads people to believe that the carbon footprint of the entire set decreases rather than increases. This negative footprint illusion is supposedly underpinned by an averaging bias: people base environmental impact estimates not on the total impact of items but on their average. Here, we found that the illusion's magnitude increased with the addition of a greater number of "green" items when the number of conventional items remained constant (Studies 1 and 2), supporting the averaging-bias account. We challenged this account by testing what happens when the number of items in the conventional and "green" categories vary while holding the ratio between the two categories constant (Study 3). At odds with the averaging-bias account, the magnitude of the illusion increased as the category size increased, revealing a category-size bias, and raising questions about the interplay between these biases in the illusion.

  • Prevention of sickness absence through early identification and rehabilitation of at-risk patients with musculoskeletal disorders (PREVSAM): short term effects of a randomised controlled trial in primary care

    • Purpose: To evaluate short-term effects of the PREVention of Sickness Absence for Musculoskeletal disorders (PREVSAM) model on sickness absence and patient-reported health outcomes. Methods: Patients with musculoskeletal disorders were randomised to rehabilitation according to PREVSAM or treatment as usual (TAU) in primary care. Sickness absence and patient-reported health outcomes were evaluated after three months in 254 participants. Results: The proportion of participants remaining in full- or part-time work were 86% in PREVSAM vs 78% in TAU (p = 0.097). The PREVSAM group had approximately four fewer sickness benefit days during three months from baseline (p range 0.078-0.126). No statistically significant difference was found in self-reported sickness absence days (PREVSAM 12.4 vs TAU 14.5; p = 0.634), nor were statistically significant differences between groups found in patient-reported health outcomes. Both groups showed significant improvements from baseline to three months, except for self-efficacy, and only the PREVSAM group showed significantly reduced depression symptoms. Conclusions: The findings suggest that for sickness absence, the PREVSAM model may have an advantage over TAU, although the difference did not reach statistical significance at the p < 0.05 level, and similar positive effects on patient-reported health outcomes were found in both groups. Long-term effects must be evaluated before firm conclusions can be drawn.

    • PurposeThe rehabilitation model "Prevention of sickness absence through early identification and rehabilitation of at-risk patients with musculoskeletal disorders" (PREVSAM) was tested in a randomised controlled trial. This study aimed to explore participating healthcare professionals' experiences of working according to the PREVSAM model, and their perceptions of its clinical benefit and feasibility in primary care rehabilitation.MethodsA focus group study including 12 healthcare professionals from five primary care rehabilitation clinics was analysed according to the focus group methodology described by Krueger and Casey.ResultsFour themes were identified. A clear framework describes how PREVSAM facilitates person-centred teamwork. The value of teamwork highlights benefits and challenges with teamwork. Through thick and thin discusses perceived patient benefits. In the ideal world focusses on feasibility of implementing the model.ConclusionsThe participants experienced that the PREVSAM model may be beneficial for the patients, for their own work situation and workplace, and for society. Identifying psychological risk factors was perceived as helpful, but not enough to capture patients in need of team-based rehabilitation. While considered feasible, barriers for implementing the model were identified. Managers and healthcare policy makers must prioritise and create appropriate conditions for team-based musculoskeletal rehabilitation in primary care. Rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders is common in primary care and rehabilitation models to identify patients at risk and prevent persistent pain and sickness absence are needed.Working according to the PREVSAM model, 'Prevention of sickness absence through early identification and rehabilitation of at-risk patients with musculoskeletal disorders', with a person-centred approach to assess the patients' needs, motivation, and resources for team-based interventions were considered beneficial for the target group of patients.The PREVSAM model may contribute to increased job satisfaction and reduce the team members' workload.The PREVSAM model requires managers at all levels, as well as healthcare policy makers, to prioritise team-based rehabilitation.

  • Multiplexed experimental strategies for fragment library screening against challenging drug targets using SPR biosensors

    • Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor methods are ideally suited for fragment-based lead discovery.  However, generally applicable experimental procedures and detailed protocols are lacking, especially for structurally or physico-chemically challenging targets or when tool compounds are not available. Success depends on accounting for the features of both the target and the chemical library, purposely designing screening experiments for identification and validation of hits with desired specificity and mode-of-action, and availability of orthogonal methods capable of confirming fragment hits. The range of targets and libraries amenable to an SPR biosensor-based approach for identifying hits is considerably expanded by adopting multiplexed strategies, using multiple complementary surfaces or experimental conditions. Here we illustrate principles and multiplexed approaches for using flow-based SPR biosensor systems for screening fragment libraries of different sizes (90 and 1056 compounds) against a selection of challenging targets. It shows strategies for the identification of fragments interacting with 1) large and structurally dynamic targets, represented by acetyl choline binding protein (AChBP), a Cys-loop receptor ligand gated ion channel homologue, 2) targets in multi protein complexes, represented by lysine demethylase 1 and a corepressor (LSD1/CoREST), 3) structurally variable or unstable targets, represented by farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase (FPPS), 4) targets containing intrinsically disordered regions, represented by protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B  (PTP1B), and 5) aggregation-prone proteins, represented by an engineered form of human tau  (tau K18M). Practical considerations and procedures accounting for the characteristics of the proteins and libraries, and that increase robustness, sensitivity, throughput and versatility are highlighted. The study shows that the challenges for addressing these types of targets is not identification of potentially useful fragments per se, but establishing methods for their validation and evolution into leads.

  • One sixth of Amazonian tree diversity is dependent on river floodplains

    • Amazonia's floodplain system is the largest and most biodiverse on Earth. Although forests are crucial to the ecological integrity of floodplains, our understanding of their species composition and how this may differ from surrounding forest types is still far too limited, particularly as changing inundation regimes begin to reshape floodplain tree communities and the critical ecosystem functions they underpin. Here we address this gap by taking a spatially explicit look at Amazonia-wide patterns of tree-species turnover and ecological specialization of the region's floodplain forests. We show that the majority of Amazonian tree species can inhabit floodplains, and about a sixth of Amazonian tree diversity is ecologically specialized on floodplains. The degree of specialization in floodplain communities is driven by regional flood patterns, with the most compositionally differentiated floodplain forests located centrally within the fluvial network and contingent on the most extraordinary flood magnitudes regionally. Our results provide a spatially explicit view of ecological specialization of floodplain forest communities and expose the need for whole-basin hydrological integrity to protect the Amazon's tree diversity and its function.

  • Experiences of rehabilitation coordination among people on sick leave with mental health problems

    • Purpose: Return to work often requires collaboration between different stakeholders. Rehabilitation coordination is a resource in coordinating efforts during sick leave to facilitate return to work. The purpose of the present study was to describe how people at risk for sick leave or on sick leave with mental health problems experienced rehabilitation coordination. Materials and Method: The study had a qualitative approach using qualitative content analysis as described by Graneheim and Lundman. Eleven semi-structured interviews were conducted with persons at risk for sick leave or on sick leave due to mental health problems and with experience of rehabilitation coordination. Results: The participants experience of rehabilitation coordination were described by the overarching theme Building a bridge with many bricks between the person and society. The theme was formed by four categories and eleven subcategories reflecting the complex context of rehabilitation coordination. The categories were Collaboration in a new setting, Unburdened within certain limits, The way back to work is a joint project and Recognising challenges beyond the person. Conclusions: People with mental health problems experienced rehabilitation coordination as a meaningful link between healthcare and work. However, rehabilitation coordination needs to be more recognised within healthcare to increase accessibility. It seems important that interventions are directed not only towards the person, but also include the workplace for a sustainable return to work.

  • Geography and ecology shape the phylogenetic composition of Amazonian tree communities

    • Aim: Amazonia hosts more tree species from numerous evolutionary lineages, both young and ancient, than any other biogeographic region. Previous studies have shown that tree lineages colonized multiple edaphic environments and dispersed widely across Amazonia, leading to a hypothesis, which we test, that lineages should not be strongly associated with either geographic regions or edaphic forest types. Location: Amazonia. Taxon: Angiosperms (Magnoliids; Monocots; Eudicots). Methods: Data for the abundance of 5082 tree species in 1989 plots were combined with a mega-phylogeny. We applied evolutionary ordination to assess how phylogenetic composition varies across Amazonia. We used variation partitioning and Moran's eigenvector maps (MEM) to test and quantify the separate and joint contributions of spatial and environmental variables to explain the phylogenetic composition of plots. We tested the indicator value of lineages for geographic regions and edaphic forest types and mapped associations onto the phylogeny. Results: In the terra firme and v & aacute;rzea forest types, the phylogenetic composition varies by geographic region, but the igap & oacute; and white-sand forest types retain a unique evolutionary signature regardless of region. Overall, we find that soil chemistry, climate and topography explain 24% of the variation in phylogenetic composition, with 79% of that variation being spatially structured (R-2 = 19% overall for combined spatial/environmental effects). The phylogenetic composition also shows substantial spatial patterns not related to the environmental variables we quantified (R-2 = 28%). A greater number of lineages were significant indicators of geographic regions than forest types. Main Conclusion: Numerous tree lineages, including some ancient ones (>66 Ma), show strong associations with geographic regions and edaphic forest types of Amazonia. This shows that specialization in specific edaphic environments has played a long-standing role in the evolutionary assembly of Amazonian forests. Furthermore, many lineages, even those that have dispersed across Amazonia, dominate within a specific region, likely because of phylogenetically conserved niches for environmental conditions that are prevalent within regions.

    • Profeminist research for much of its history has, understandably, tended to focus on making visible the dynamics by which men’s practices have oppressed women, children and other men - and in that way to counter men’s violence. By contrast, the last few years have seen more pro-active attempts to systematically study why some men decide to openly challenge men’s violence - and so how to increase the number of such profeminist allies working directly with men and boys. This chapter reports on part of a recent qualitative study opening up some strategies to advance this vital task. The authors explore the dynamics by which some Swedish men have decided to work towards ending men’s violences in their daily work with men and/or boys. Given space constraints, the chapter focuses on one particularly powerful strategy that our study suggests has been relatively neglected by previous international research: what we call intersectional identification. We highlight how this strategy can be utilized more extensively and broadly than hitherto to maximize both numerically and qualitatively the contribution of profeminist men to challenging men’s violence against women and children.

  • Why ecosystem characteristics predicted from remotely sensed data are unbiased and biased at the same time – and how this affects applications

    • Remotely sensed data are frequently used for predicting and mapping ecosystem characteristics, and spatially explicit wall-to-wall information is sometimes proposed as the best possible source of information for decision-making. However, wall-to-wall information typically relies on model-based prediction, and several features of model-based prediction should be understood before extensively relying on this type of information. One such feature is that model-based predictors can be considered both unbiased and biased at the same time, which has important implications in several areas of application. In this discussion paper, we first describe the conventional model-unbiasedness paradigm that underpins most prediction techniques using remotely sensed (or other) auxiliary data. From this point of view, model-based predictors are typically unbiased. Secondly, we show that for specific domains, identified based on their true values, the same model-based predictors can be considered biased, and sometimes severely so.We suggest distinguishing between conventional model-bias, defined in the statistical literature as the difference between the expected value of a predictor and the expected value of the quantity being predicted, and design-bias of model-based estimators, defined as the difference between the expected value of a model-based estimator and the true value of the quantity being predicted. We show that model-based estimators (or predictors) are typically design-biased, and that there is a trend in the design-bias from overestimating small true values to underestimating large true values. Further, we give examples of applications where this is important to acknowledge and to potentially make adjustments to correct for the design-bias trend. We argue that relying entirely on conventional model-unbiasedness may lead to mistakes in several areas of application that use predictions from remotely sensed data.

  • Geographic patterns of tree dispersal modes in Amazonia and their ecological correlates

    • Aim To investigate the geographic patterns and ecological correlates in the geographic distribution of the most common tree dispersal modes in Amazonia (endozoochory, synzoochory, anemochory and hydrochory). We examined if the proportional abundance of these dispersal modes could be explained by the availability of dispersal agents (disperser-availability hypothesis) and/or the availability of resources for constructing zoochorous fruits (resource-availability hypothesis). Time period Tree-inventory plots established between 1934 and 2019. Major taxa studied Trees with a diameter at breast height (DBH) >= 9.55 cm. Location Amazonia, here defined as the lowland rain forests of the Amazon River basin and the Guiana Shield. Methods We assigned dispersal modes to a total of 5433 species and morphospecies within 1877 tree-inventory plots across terra-firme, seasonally flooded, and permanently flooded forests. We investigated geographic patterns in the proportional abundance of dispersal modes. We performed an abundance-weighted mean pairwise distance (MPD) test and fit generalized linear models (GLMs) to explain the geographic distribution of dispersal modes. Results Anemochory was significantly, positively associated with mean annual wind speed, and hydrochory was significantly higher in flooded forests. Dispersal modes did not consistently show significant associations with the availability of resources for constructing zoochorous fruits. A lower dissimilarity in dispersal modes, resulting from a higher dominance of endozoochory, occurred in terra-firme forests (excluding podzols) compared to flooded forests. Main conclusions The disperser-availability hypothesis was well supported for abiotic dispersal modes (anemochory and hydrochory). The availability of resources for constructing zoochorous fruits seems an unlikely explanation for the distribution of dispersal modes in Amazonia. The association between frugivores and the proportional abundance of zoochory requires further research, as tree recruitment not only depends on dispersal vectors but also on conditions that favour or limit seedling recruitment across forest types.
