    • The Herschel Lensing Survey (HLS) takes advantage of gravitational lensing by massive galaxy clusters to sample a population of high-redshift galaxies which are too faint to be detected above the confusion limit of current far-infrared/submillimeter telescopes. Measurements from 100-500 mu m bracket the peaks of the far-infrared spectral energy distributions of these galaxies, characterizing their infrared luminosities and star formation rates. We introduce initial results from our science demonstration phase observations, directed toward the Bullet cluster (1E0657-56). By combining our observations with LABOCA 870 mu m and AzTEC 1.1 mm data we fully constrain the spectral energy distributions of 19 MIPS 24 mu m-selected galaxies which are located behind the cluster. We find that their colors are best fit using templates based on local galaxies with systematically lower infrared luminosities. This suggests that our sources are not like local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies in which vigorous star formation is contained in a compact highly dust-obscured region. Instead, they appear to be scaled up versions of lower luminosity local galaxies with star formation occurring on larger physical scales.

This paper presents the results obtained with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the ESOVery Large Telescope on the faint end of the Lyman-alpha luminosity function (LF) based on deep observations of four lensing clusters. The goal of our project is to set strong constraints on the relative contribution of the Lyman-alpha emitter (LAE) population to cosmic reionization.Aims. The precise aim of the present study is to further constrain the abundance of LAEs by taking advantage of the magnification provided by lensing clusters to build a blindly selected sample of galaxies which is less biased than current blank field samples in redshift and luminosity. By construction, this sample of LAEs is complementary to those built from deep blank fields, whether observed by MUSE or by other facilities, and makes it possible to determine the shape of the LF at fainter levels, as well as its evolution with redshift.Methods. We selected a sample of 156 LAEs with redshifts between 2.9 <= z <= 6.7 and magnification-corrected luminosities in the range 39 less than or similar to log L-Ly alpha [erg s(-1)] less than or similar to 43. To properly take into account the individual differences in detection conditions between the LAEs when computing the LF, including lensing configurations, and spatial and spectral morphologies, the non-parametric 1/V-max method was adopted. The price to pay to benefit from magnification is a reduction of the effective volume of the survey, together with a more complex analysis procedure to properly determine the effective volume V-max for each galaxy. In this paper we present a complete procedure for the determination of the LF based on IFU detections in lensing clusters. This procedure, including some new methods for masking, effective volume integration and (individual) completeness determinations, has been fully automated when possible, and it can be easily generalized to the analysis of IFU observations in blank fields.Results. As a result of this analysis, the Lyman-alpha LF has been obtained in four different redshift bins: 2.9 < z < 6; 7, 2.9 < z < 4.0, 4 : 0 < z < 5.0; and 5 : 0 < z < 6.7 with constraints down to log L-Ly alpha = 40.5. From our data only, no significant evolution of LF mean slope can be found. When performing a Schechter analysis also including data from the literature to complete the present sample towards the brightest luminosities, a steep faint end slope was measured varying from alpha = -1.69(-0.08)(+0.08) to alpha = -1.87(-0 .12)(+0.12) between the lowest and the highest redshift bins.Conclusions. The contribution of the LAE population to the star formation rate density at z similar to 6 is less than or similar to 50% depending on the luminosity limit considered, which is of the same order as the Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) contribution. The evolution of the LAE contribution with redshift depends on the assumed escape fraction of Lyman-alpha photons, and appears to slightly increase with increasing redshift when this fraction is conservatively set to one. Depending on the intersection between the LAE/LBG populations, the contribution of the observed galaxies to the ionizing flux may suffice to keep the universe ionized at z similar to 6.

    • We present the deepest study to date of the Ly alpha luminosity function in a blank field using blind integral field spectroscopy from MUSE. We constructed a sample of 604 Ly alpha emitters (LAEs) across the redshift range 2.91 < z < 6.64 using automatic detection software in the Hubble Ultra Deep Lield. The deep data cubes allowed us to calculate accurate total Ly alpha fluxes capturing low surface-brightness extended Ly alpha emission now known to be a generic property of high-redshift star-forming galaxies. We simulated realistic extended LAEs to fully characterise the selection function of our samples, and performed flux-recovery experiments to test and correct for bias in our determination of total Ly alpha fluxes. We find that an accurate completeness correction accounting for extended emission reveals a very steep faint-end slope of the luminosity function, alpha, down to luminosities of log(10) L erg s(-1) < 41.5, applying both the 1/V-max and maximum likelihood estimators. Splitting the sample into three broad redshift bins, we see the faint-end slope increasing from -2.03(-0.07)(+1.42) at z approximate to 3.44 to -2.86(-infinity)(+0.76) Z approximate to 76 at z approximate to 5.48, however no strong evolution is seen between the 68% confidence regions in L*-alpha parameter space. Using the Ly alpha line flux as a proxy for star formation activity, and integrating the observed luminosity functions, we find that LAEs' contribution to the cosmic star formation rate density rises with redshift until it is comparable to that from continuum-selected samples by z approximate to 6. This implies that LAEs may contribute more to the star-formation activity of the early Universe than previously thought, as any additional intergalactic medium (IGM) correction would act to further boost the Ly alpha luminosities. Linally, assuming fiducial values for the escape of Ly alpha and LyC radiation, and the dumpiness of the IGM, we integrated the maximum likelihood luminosity function at 5.00 < z < 6.64 and find we require only a small extrapolation beyond the data (<1 dex in luminosity) for LAEs alone to maintain an ionised IGM at z approximate to 6.

    • We present preliminary results about the detection of high redshift (U)LIRGs in the Bullet cluster field by the PACS and SPIRE instruments within the Herschel Lensing Survey (HLS) Program. We describe in detail a photometric procedure designed to recover robust fluxes and deblend faint Herschel sources near the confusion noise. The method is based on the use of the positions of Spitzer/MIPS 24 mu m sources as priors. Our catalogs are able to reliably (5 sigma) recover galaxies with fluxes above 6 and 10 mJy in the PACS 100 and 160 mu m channels, respectively, and 12 to 18 mJy in the SPIRE bands. We also obtain spectral energy distributions covering the optical through the far-infrared/millimeter spectral ranges of all the Herschel detected sources, and analyze them to obtain independent estimations of the photometric redshift based on either stellar population or dust emission models. We exemplify the potential of the combined use of Spitzer position priors plus independent optical and IR photometric redshifts to robustly assign optical/NIR counterparts to the sources detected by Herschel and other (sub-)mm instruments.

    • In the course of our 870 μm APEX/LABOCA follow-up of the Herschel Lensing Survey we have detected a source in AS1063 (RXC J2248.7-4431) that has no counterparts in any of the Herschel PACS/SPIRE bands, it is a Herschel "drop-out" with S870=S500 ≥ 0:5. The 870 μm emission is extended and centered on the brightest cluster galaxy, suggesting either a multiply imaged background source or substructure in the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich increment due to inhomogeneities in the hot cluster gas of this merging cluster. We discuss both interpretations with emphasis on the putative lensed source. Based on the observed properties and on our lens model we find that this source may be the first submillimeter galaxy (SMG) with a moderate far-infrared (FIR) luminosity (LFIR. © ESO 2013.

    • Context. Faint, star-forming galaxies are likely to play a dominant role in cosmic reionisation. Great strides have been made in recent years to characterise these populations at high redshifts (z > 3). Now, for the first time, with JWST photometry beyond 1 μm in the rest frame, we can derive accurate stellar masses and position these galaxies on the galaxy main sequence.Aims. We seek to assess the place of 96 individual Lyman-α emitters (LAEs) selected behind the A2744 lensing cluster with MUSE IFU spectroscopy on the galaxy main sequence. We also compare the derived stellar masses to Lyman-α luminosities and equivalent widths to better quantify the relationship between the Lyman-α emission and the host galaxy.Methods. These 96 LAEs lie in the redshift range of 2.9 < z < 6.7, with their range of masses extending down to 106 M⊙ (over half with M⋆ < 108 M⊙). We used the JWST/NIRCam and HST photometric catalogues from the UNCOVER project, giving us excellent wavelength coverage from 450 nm to 4.5 μm. We also performed an SED fitting using CIGALE, fixing the redshift of the LAEs to the secure, spectroscopic value. This combination of photometric coverage with spectroscopic redshifts allows us to robustly derive stellar masses for these galaxies.Results. We found a main sequence relation for these low-mass LAEs of log SFR = (0.88 ± 0.07 − 0.030 ± 0.027 × t) log M⋆ − (6.31 ± 0.41 − 0.08 ± 0.37 × t). This is in relative agreement with the best-fit results of prior collated studies; however, here we see a steeper slope and a higher normalisation. This indicates that low-mass LAEs towards the epoch of reionisation lie above the typical literature main sequence relations derived at lower redshift and higher masses. In addition, by comparing our results to UV-selected samples, we can see that while low-mass LAEs lie above these typical main sequence relations, they are likely not singular in this respect at these particular masses and redshifts. While low-mass galaxies have been shown to play a significant role in cosmic reionisation, our results point to the likelihood that LAEs hold no special position in this regard.

    • The aim of this paper is to introduce the WIRCam Ultra Deep Survey (WUDS), a near-IR photometric survey carried out at the CFH Telescope in the field of the CFHTLS-D3 field (Groth Strip). WUDS includes four near-IR bands (Y, J, H and K-s) over a field of view of similar to 400 arcmin(2). The typical depth of WUDS data reaches between similar to 26.8 in Y and J, and similar to 26 in H and K-s (AB, 3 sigma- in 1.3 '' aperture), whereas the corresponding depth of the CFHTLS-D3 images in this region ranges between 28.6 and 29 in ugr, 28.2 in i and 27.1 in z (same S/N and aperture). The area and depth of this survey were specifically tailored to set strong constraints on the cosmic star formation rate and the luminosity function brighter or around L* in the z similar to 6-10 redshift domain, although these data are also useful for a variety of extragalactic projects. This first paper is intended to present the properties of the public WUDS survey in details: catalog building, completeness and depth, number counts, photometric redshifts, and global properties of the galaxy population. We have also concentrated on the selection and characterization of galaxy samples at z similar to [4.5-7] in this field. For these purposes, we include an adjacent shallower area of similar to 1260 arcmin(2) in this region, extracted from the WIRCam Deep Survey (WIRDS), and observed in J, H and K-s bands. UV luminosity functions were derived at z - 5 and z - 6 taking advantage from the fact that WUDS covers a particularly interesting regime at intermediate luminosities, which allows a combined determination of M* and Phi* with increased accuracy. Our results on the luminosity function are consistent with a small evolution of both M* and Phi* between z = 5 and z = 6, irrespective of the method used to derive them, either photometric redshifts applied to blindly-selected dropout samples or the classical Lyman Break Galaxy color-preselected samples. Our results lend support to higher Phi* determinations at z = 6 than usually reported. The selection and combined analysis of different galaxy samples at z >= 7 will be presented in a forthcoming paper, as well as the evolution of the UV luminosity function between z similar to 4.5 and 9. WUDS is intended to provide a robust database in the near-IR for the selection of targets for detailed spectroscopic studies, in particular for the EMIR/GTC GOYA Survey.

    • Context. Faint galaxies are theorised to have played a major role, perhaps the dominant role, in reionising the Universe. Their properties, as well as the Lyman-α emitter (LAE) fraction, XLAE, could provide useful insights into this epoch.Aims. We used four clusters of galaxies from the Lensed Lyman-alpha MUSE Arcs Sample (LLAMAS) that also have deep HST photometry to select a population of intrinsically faint Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and LAEs. We study the interrelation between these two populations, their properties, and the fraction of LBGs that display Lyman-α emission.Methods. The use of lensing clusters allows us to access an intrinsically faint population of galaxies, the largest such sample collected for this purpose: 263 LAEs and 972 LBGs with redshifts between 2.9 and 6.7, Lyman-α luminosities in the range 39.5 ≲ log(LLyα)(erg s−1)≲42, and absolute UV magnitudes in the range −22 ≲ M1500 ≲ −12. In addition to matching LAEs and LBGs, we define an LAE+continuum sample for the LAEs that match with a continuum object that is not selected as an LBG. Additionally, with the use of MUSE integral field spectroscopy, we detect a population of LAEs completely undetected in the continuum.Results. We find a redshift evolution of XLAE in line with literature results, with diminished values above z = 6. In line with past studies, we take this as signifying an increasingly neutral intervening intergalactic medium. When inspecting this redshift evolution with different limits on EWLyα and M1500, we find that the XLAE for the UV-brighter half of our sample is higher than the XLAE for the UV-fainter half, a difference that increases at higher redshifts. This is a surprising result and can be interpreted as the presence of a population of low Lyman-α equivalent width (EWLyα), UV-bright galaxies situated in reionised bubbles and overdensities. This result is especially interesting in the context of similar, UV-bright, low EWLyα objects recently detected during and around the epoch of reionisation. For intrinsically fainter objects, we confirm the previously observed trend of LAEs among LBGs as galaxies with high star formation rates and low dust content, as well as the trend of the strongest LAEs having, in general, fainter M1500 and steeper UV slopes.

    • Context. This paper presents a study of the galaxy Lyman-alpha luminosity function (LF) using a large sample of 17 lensing clusters observed by the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The magnification resulting from strong gravitational lensing by clusters of galaxies and MUSE spectroscopic capabilities allows for blind detections of LAEs without any photometric pre-selection, reaching the faint luminosity regime.Aims. The present work aims to constrain the abundance of Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) and quantify their contribution to the total cosmic reionization budget.Methods. We selected 600 lensed LAEs behind these clusters in the redshift range of 2.9 < z < 6.7, covering four orders of magnitude in magnification-corrected Ly-α luminosity (39.0 < log(L)[erg s−1] < 43.0). These data were collected behind lensing clusters, indicating an increased complexity in the computation of the LF to properly account for magnification and dilution effects. We applied a non-parametric Vmax method to compute the LF to carefully determine the survey volume where an individual source could have been detected. The method used in this work follows the recipes originally developed in previous works, with some improvements to better account for the effects of lensing when computing the effective volume.Results. The total co-moving volume at 2.9 < z < 6.7 in the present survey is ∼50 103 Mpc3. Our LF points in the bright end (log(L) [erg s−1] > 42) are consistent with those obtained from blank field observations. In the faint luminosity regime, the density of sources is well described by a steep slope, α ∼ −2 for the global redshift range. Up to log(L) [erg s−1] ∼ 41, the steepening of the faint end slope with redshift, suggested in earlier works, is observed, but the uncertainties are still large. A significant flattening is observed towards the faintest end, for the highest redshift bins, namely, log(L)[erg s−1] < 41.Conclusions. When taken at face value, the steep slope at the faint-end causes the star formation rate density (SFRD) to dramatically increase with redshift, implying that LAEs could play a major role in the process of cosmic reionization. The flattening observed towards the faint end for the highest redshift bins still requires further investigation. This turnover is similar to the one observed for the UV LF at z ≥ 6 in lensing clusters, with the same conclusions regarding the reliability of current results. Improving the statistical significance of the sample in this low-luminosity high-redshift regime is a difficult endeavour that may lead to potentially valuable leads in understanding the process of reionization.
