- This is a reading of Eliot Elisofon's portrait of Chinua Achebe taken in Enugu on November 16, 1959. Achebe's Things Fall Apart has recently been published. My reading of the portrait is placed in the larger context of the mission of Elisofon's travel to produce two seemingly antagonistic articles or viewpoints for LIFE magazine, one old, the second modern. The first about the Western myths of Africa, I claim, submerged the second about the independence process of Nigeria. The portrait of a young assertive Achebe is filtered by such a complexity.

- Erla Hovilainen-Husgafvel (f. Lund), född 1907, uppvuxen i Gamlakarleby och Vasa, flyttade med sina föräldrar som femtonåring till Åbo där hon tog studenten vid Åbo svenska samskola och 1928 fil.mag. examen i folklivsforskning för professor Gabriel Nikander vid Åbo Akademi. Under trettio-talet deltog hon i etnologiska fältexpeditioner i Österbotten och Estland och påbörjade ett mångsidigt författarskap med utgångspunkt i sin forskning som skulle (mer eller mindre) upphöra i och med utvandringen till Sverige (via Danmark) efter krigen. Hon dog 1984 i Småland, Sverige.Kapitlet är strukturerat enligt tre teoretiska modeller, en bibliografisk, en biografisk, och en idéhistorisk. Jag har organiserat Husgafvels skriftliga produktioner i kronologisk ordning (med en bilagd lista på hennes rikssvenska journalistiska arbeten), som samtidigt utgör plattform för att identifiera enskilda verks genretillhörighet (från fältarbetsanteckningen till krönikan, essän, lustspelet, radioprogrammet, dokumentationen/boken) och deras roll i ett särpräglat etnologiskt författarskap. Kapitlet diskuterar hållpunkter (personliga och strukturella) i Husgafels liv som avgörande för hennes förståelsekultur: hennes sociala familjebakgrund, krigen, patriarkala akademiska mönster, och styrkan/svagheten i utanförskap/exil som kvinna/fattig/österbottnisk 'häxa'. Jag länkar det biografiska perspektivet med det idéhistoriska för att förstå eller problematisera tre övergripande motivområden som Husgafvel var besatt av: 1. revolt och anpassning: bygdekonservatism, nationalism, överträdelse; 2. (myten om) det österbottniska samhället (byn) som naturtillstånd och kunskapsreservat; 3. (e)migrationens ideologiska vemod.Kapitlet är avsett ge ny kunskap om en relativ okänd finlandssvensk etnolog och berätta om ett emigrantöde av ett speciellt slag.

- The critical reception of Sparrman's South African travelogue (as a whole text and not a source bank for particular scholarly interests) is, markedly, dominated by inaudibility and negligence. The resistance to examine the in-between-ness of Sparrman's dialogic meetings outside of their spatial and temporal hierarchies is persevering. Style is always personal. Genre is not. It within the interface of a social event shaped by speakers in translation, in exchanges of shared values transcending the colonial asymmetry that Sparrman emerged as a reciprocal, interactive agent.This chapter discusses the entangled history of Anders Sparrman's travel account Resa till Goda Hopps-udden, södra pol-kretsen och omkring jordklotet, samt till hottentott- och caffer-landen, åren 1772-76, its decade long progression from fieldwork memoranda to the Swedish edition (1783) and the translations into German (1784) and English (1785, 1786). My focus is on the linguistic-cultural communication that evolved between Sparrman and his informants and how its critical denouncement of Boer colonial aggression and enactment of Khoisan struggle for survival were adjusted to the Linnean pedagogy for naturalist travellers and translators. I show how Sparrman endorsed the Linnean concept of 'socializing' with the people en route for the acquisition of data, how his fascination with language provided him with an incisive tool for self-reflexivity. I extend the notion of field-work to confront the postmodern negligence and rejection of Sparrman as a unique communicator and writer.

- The essay, ”Traveling with a Sack of Food and a Camera: Eliot Elisofon in Wartime Finland 1944,” is based on a war-correspondent's diary for LIFE magazine of a two-week field-trip to northern Finland at the end of September 1944. Elisofon's purpose was to document the expulsion by the Finns of the Nazi army in Lapland. I analyze his text and its conjunction with the photos, with a focus on a) Elisofon's critical views of Finnish military strategy as it developed at the skirmishes at Torneå on 3-5 October (when he was injured by German Stukas); b) on the social effects of the war on Finnish life; c) on the consolatory and compensatory impact of food (one of Elisofon's major pastimes); d) on the ethics and the technique of his photography. This is the second article in a series of three about Elisofon in Finland and Sweden (September 1939, February-November 1944).

- Det här är en bok om tre män i ett nordösterbottniskt kustlandskap och en by kallad Öja. Byns framväxt och politiska historia under 1900-talet vävs samman med de tre männens liv som trävaruhandlare, småbrukare, skeppare, fritidspolitiker, universitetslärare. I centrum står fadern Duvald, i bakgrunden farfadern Oskar, och i förgrunden sonen, författaren.På det individuella planet rör sig skildringen över de områden som männen varit upptagna i: flottning till Lappajärvi och Evijärvi sjöar längs Esse å ner till industrin i Jakobstad, lastbilstrafik, de två finländska krigen, skogsbruk, jordbruk, kommunalpolitik, undervisning och forskning. På det tematiska och idéhistoriska planet diskuterar boken aspekter av männens österbottniska värld i kris och förändring.Boken är förlagd i en sekulär humanistisk ordning. Utbildningsresan, som boken gestaltar, har ingen destination. Den rör sig åt sidorna och gör turer bakåt. Boken är belägrad av ett feministiskt och aktivistiskt perspektiv, i vilket barnets och ynglingens sensoriska minne är meningsskapande. Världen må vara männens men den upplevs genom en annans.

- This is an essay of Ngugi wa Thiong'o's sustained performative exile in the US as it was materialized (by reviews, interviews, lectures) during the single year of 2006. It is organized along the intersecting parameters of the two-language publication (Gikuyu and English) of his novel Wizard of the Crow and the trial procedures concerning the 11 August 2004 assault on him and his wife Njeeri in a hotel room in Nairobi. I discuss the reviews as conglomerates where the participatory contributions to them are prompted by Ngugi's public readings, his interactions with the audience and the succeeding interviews. The writer emerges as an authorial reader of his own novel and an administrator of the interpretations of it. The essay, alternatively, positions the reader/critic/listener in the company of a storyteller and trickster on one hand and a political analyst and émigré biographer on the other. The author is more than a writer.

- This is a close study of the LIFE photo-essay "A Writer's Land of Primitive, Eloquent Beauty: Storied World of Africa" (1961) by Eliot Elisofon. His double-faced essay contains eighteen photos, which he took during an extended travel on the continent in September-December 1959, and fourteen literary extracts from the Western canon that accompany the visual material. I identify the socio-political context and the visual/literary conventions within which the photos were taken, explore the photo-essay's racist story-telling and panoptic and mythological viewing of Africa and allege, tentatively, the LIFE essay's duplicitous role in Cold War American politics of the time. The LIFE essay solidified time-worn mythological concepts of Africa championing them as pseudo-historical facts with particular regions as their strongholds. East Africa was depicted as Animal Eden; Apartheid's South Africa, as balanced Boer Freedom; Congo, as the Land of Savagery; West Africa, as Nakedness. The purpose of the LIFE essay, I demonstrate, was to trivialize and demonize the post-colonial process in Africa. Eliot Elisofon's 1959 travel contained three other projects, two of which (a coverage of "new" Nigeria and extensive aerial expeditions) were implicated in the same LIFE narrative of Cold War stewardship. I discuss these two only provisionally.
