  • History and Chronicles in Late Medieval Iberia : Representations of Wamba in Late Medieval Narrative Histories by Aengus Ward
  • 2013
  • In: La Corónica. - New York : Modern Language Association of America. - 0193-3892 .- 1947-4261. ; 41:2, s. 265-270
  • Review (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The book under scrutiny here is the culmination of an ambitious study. It has been the intention of Aengus Ward (Ph.D., 1995, Birmingham) to examine a large number of textual representations of the seventh-century Visigothic King Wamba in order to delve into the question of the existence of a chronicle genre in late medieval Iberia. Ward, a Senior Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at the University of Birmingham, has previously published critical editions of late medieval Iberian chronicles and a number of articles on historiography, authorship, and manuscript culture. The importance of his contribution to the recent strengthening of research on medieval Iberian historiography is undeniable.

  • Den medeltida riddaren som intertextuellt fenomen : Om hjältekonstruktioner i Eufemiavisorna och Erikskrönikan
  • 2012. - 1
  • In: Hjältar och Hjältinnor. - Lund : Nordic Academic Press. - 9789187121562 ; , s. 41-73
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
• Performing Chivalric Masculinity : Morality, Restraint, and Emotional Norms in the Libro del Cavallero Zifar
  • 2018
  • In: Affective and Emotional Economies in Medieval and Early Modern Europe. - Cham, Switzerland : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783319606682 - 9783319606699 ; , s. 227-246
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Bergqvist offers an analysis of how emotional and affective behavior are portrayed in relation to masculinity in the Libro del Cavallero Zifar, the first domestic book of chivalry composed in medieval Castile around the year 1300. This literary work embodies knightly manhood and the performative aspect of lay elite masculinity. Bergqvist finds that the male ideal of the Zifar, epitomized in its eponymous hero, is characterized by emotional restraint and composure. This ideal of moderation, shared with contemporaneous wisdom literature, grounds Castilian chivalry in morality, and creates a distance from the emotionally expressive Arthurian knights of French romances. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the incentive for promoting this ideal and the influence on the narrative of Toledo as the place of composition.

  • Allegory, Satire, and the Legitimation of Rebellion in Fourteenth-Century Sweden
  • 2021
  • In: Proceedings of the 10th Háskóli Íslands Student Conference on the Medieval North (Reykjavík, April 15–17, 2021). - Reykjavík : University of Iceland Centre for Medieval Studies. - 9789935250957 ; , s. 34-35
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In fourteenth-century Sweden, several depositions of kings (in 1318, 1364, and 1389) were followed by the production of literary depictions of those kings’ reigns, pointing out their many faults, the wickedness of their advisors, or the tyrannical nature of their rule. Thus, Latin and vernacular literature could serve a legitimating function, presenting both the actions of the rebels and the succeeding regime as lawful. These texts were composed shortly after the events in question, giving one faction’s view of a recent conflict; they portray motivations, modes of composition, and a historical consciousness distinct from regnal history writing.

  • Courtliness, Nobility, and Emotional Restraint in the First Old Swedish Translated Romances : on Herr Ivan and Flores och Blanzeflor
  • 2017
  • In: Beyond the Piraeus Lion. - Copenhagen/Odense : Syddansk Universitetsforlag. - 9788740831092 ; , s. 189-212
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • Crowdsourcing and Citizen Humanities : The Problems and Potentials of Public Engagement in Humanities Research
  • 2023
  • In: Public History in Action. - Uppsala : Uppsala universitet. - 9789198450965 ; , s. 149-165
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This chapter begins by discussing the different types and phases of crowdsourcing in terms of their possibilities for participants and problems for scholars. Forms of crowdsourcing such as volunteers’ transformation of content (existing institutional resources) and their production of new content differ from each other, and even more from projects explicitly including pedagogical aims and aspirations of co-production.The chapter uses the example of a recent large-scale humanities research project that relied heavily on crowdsourcing, the Estoria DIgiTal (EDIT). After exploring crowdsourcing in the humanities through examining that and other projects in the cultural heritage sector, the humanities, and citizen history, the chapter moves on to themes of current relevance to public humanities and public history. It defines citizen humanities as a distinct, participatory rather than delegatory, type of project, and then discusses the impact and relevance of citizen humanities and volunteer commitment in terms of problems and possibilities. Finally, I outline the features of a citizen humanities that considers both knowledge production and the teaching of related skills.I argue that to establish a field of genuine citizen humanities, we must learn how to teach research-related skills to participants and define transferable skills as a pedagogical outcome of such projects.
