- Discourses of multiculturalism, pluralism and cultural diversity are often portrayed as the opposite to racism and ethno-nationalism. Meanwhile, ethnic identity has been given a predominant palce in the rethoric of both the traditional and the new xenophobic political parties in Europe, where multiculturality is seen as one of the challenges of globalization to the political model of the welfare-state. The article explores the connection between multiculturalism and ethno-nationalism through the history of identity politics in Sweden.
