- The pronunciation of initial stops and those with a nasal preceding it varies substantially in Mpiemo. Equivalence of the pronounciation of allophones in the two categories may lead to a contraction of phonological categories in the future. The potential of such a process seems to be supported by the difference in language awareness of speakers of different age.
