Changing perceptions of the Western form of Government in Islamic Thought

• The Muslim view of Europe and the West and the reception given in Muslim countries to political reforms which have their roots in Western traditions of political ideas have varied in the extreme in modern times. The difference in reception has depended on circumstances such as the nature of the encounters between Muslim countries and European and Western states, the degree of insight into these political reforms on the part of the political and intellectual elite in Muslim countries, the models employed for introducing the reforms, and what happened in those countries which tried to implement them.One must add to the above the actions of the European and Western states, which gave priority to their own geopolitical and economic interests above the development of democracy in Muslim countries – an approach which aligned the West with despotic rulers in the Muslim world who did everything either to prevent a transition to constitutional and democratic government or to undermine the implementation of such reforms.The aim of this article is to depict the changing perceptions regarding the Western style of political government prevailing in Muslim countries in modern times.
