- Drawing on results from the ClueE-project, the far-reaching ambitions pursued by the city of Alingsås facinates. The town pushes their agenda to decrease their municipal ecological footprint per capita. Most energy strategists across Sweden today do not address the need to downsize living-spaces. In the town hall of Alingsås, we find far-reaching agreement that per capita footprints must be reduced; examples of this include transforming the existing building-stock into low-energy passive houses, also adding new passive structures. Moreover, the city actively reduces the number of cars per household, from 2 to 1, or from 1 to 0. Located by a major highway, the town politicians engage in an upgrade of the railway while the highway remains at present capacity. What are the major tools and tactics used for this development? Both political camps agree this is a necessary development to take, regardless of national trends of the day. A closely knitted set of bureaucrats are taking command of the overall planning, as of aspects such as energy-strategies, or the social dimension “the good life”. Thirdly, the town has close connections with academic environments nationally and internationally, as delegations come visiting their full-size test-bed of the future on a monthly basis.
