- This project investigates the role of literary studies up to bachelor level in foreign language education in order to shed light on the results of a long institutional development in Sweden, where literary scholars have gradually joined language departments, thereby heavily influencing the course syllabi. The project has a threefold entry: the didactic perspective maps current research on uses of literary studies in language education; the institutional perspective examines course syllabi and learning goals; the student-centred perspective, which carries the most weight in this project, gathers data on student expectations on and experiences of the use of literary studies in language education through surveys. The results clearly show that language students expect to get schooled in literary sciences, and especially on bachelor level, but want to focalize strongly on language practice on all levels. The current tendency to include literary analysis already on beginner and ground levels does not meet the student’s expectations, inspires less theoretical interest and promotes language proficiency to a lower degree than cultural and linguistical courses, whereas literary theory and method scores higher from the second term onwards.
