The Arena of the Body : The Cyborg and Feminist Views on Biology

• The woman warrior (Lynn Randolph) described in this chapter is an activist made animal, a freak of science, an embodied bio-hacker, a self-(de)organised gender bender, a thorn in the eye of racist discourse; this woman warrior of feminist science completely unbalances your human identity. The distinction between sex and gender is deployed to explore the mechanisms of sexual difference and, for example, to debunk Freud's idea that 'anatomy is destiny' (Freud 1931). Gender became the touchstone for feminist research and scholarship. Cyborgs of the Cold War are to operate according to the military logic of command-control-communication-intelligence. The most fundamental critique in feminist approaches to biology is concerned with gendered interpretations of nature. Haraway's figural realism is a precursor of Karen Barad's famous 'agential realism' and 'posthumanist performativity' — concepts that have been developed along similar lines with regard to the dissolution of boundaries; between epistemology and ontology, the material and the discursive, nature and culture.
