In this paper we estimate equations for relative hourly earnings for 50 industrial sectors from Sweden, Finland, Great Britatin and the United States. We find that relative hourly earnings fluctuate less in Sweden than in the other three countries. In all four countries only a quarter to one third of the sectors show any influence of relative sector performance or labour requirement on relative hourly earnings. In the United States there are aggregate cyclical influences on relative earnings in most sectors, in the European countries only in a small minority of sectors.
