    • Ultraviolet photoelectron spectra (UPS) of C-82 isomers have been calculated using hybrid density functional theory in combination with the Gelius model [Proceedings of the International Conference on Electron spectroscopy, edited by D. A. Shirley (North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1972), p. 311; J. Electron Spectrosc. Relat. Phenom. 5, 985 (1974)]. The calculated UPS spectra are found to be isomer dependent and in good agreement with the experimental counterparts. Near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray emission spectroscopy, and the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of three important isomers [3(C-2), 6(C-s), and 9(C-2v)] have also been simulated. Strong isomer dependence has also been found for NEXAFS, XPS, and RIXS spectra.

    • Using silicon as a central atom of porphyrin allows the introduction of axial ligands, which are not only employed to prevent the aggregation of the macrocycles but also anchor the dyes onto the TiO2 surface. A dye-sensitized solar cell with this porphyrin sensitizer achieved a broad IPCE of around 40-60% between 380 and 670 nm.

  • Stability analysis of discrete-time systems with poisson-distributed delays

    • This paper is concerned with the stability analysis of linear discrete-time systems with poisson-distributed delays. Firstly, the exponential stability condition of system with poisson-distributed delays is derived when the corresponding system with the zero-delay or the system without the delayed term is asymptotically stable. Then, an augmented Lyapunov functional is suggested to handle the case that the corresponding system without the delay as well as the system without the delayed term are not necessary to be asymptotically stable. Furthermore, we show that the results can be further improved by formulating the system as a higher-order augmented one and applying the corresponding augmented Lyapunov functional. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed results is illustrated by some numerical examples.

    • Many studies have suggested the hypothesis that the plasminogen activator (PA) system and the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) system, either separately or in combination, may provide the proteolytic activity that is required for rupture of the follicular wall at the time of ovulation. Our recent studies on ovulation in plasminogen (plg)-deficient mice have, however, shown that plasmin is not required for normal ovulation, leading us to the hypothesis that MMPs may be a more important source of proteolysis for this process. To investigate the role of MMPs and also the possibility of a functional overlap or synergy between the MMP and PA systems during ovulation, we have studied ovulation efficiency in wild-type and plg-deficient mice treated with the broad-spectrum MMP inhibitor galardin. We found that in both wild-type mice and heterozygous plg-deficient (plg(+/-)) mice that had been treated with galardin prior to ovulation, there was a mild (18-20%) reduction in ovulation efficiency. Surprisingly, galardin treatment of plg-deficient (plg(-/-)) mice only caused an additional 14% reduction in ovulation efficiency as compared to vehicle-treated plg(-/-) mice. Our data therefore suggest that although MMPs may play a role in degradation of the follicular wall, they may not be obligatory for ovulation. In contrast to previous studies on tissue remodeling during wound heating and placental development, we have demonstrated that there is no obvious functional overlap or synergy between the PA and MMP systems, which has previously been thought to be essential for the ovulatory process.

    • The emissive layer morphology strongly correlates with the charge transport and light-emitting performance of solution-processed phosphor-doped organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). Herein, morphology manipulation of the solution-processed emissive layer comprising of carbazole dendrimer (H2) host:blue phosphor (FIrpic) guest is realized via processing of the solvent and its influence on charge transport and light-emitting properties is investigated. The formation of H2 aggregates within its amorphous matrix processed with the toluene:p-xylene solvent mixture distinctively improves the hole and electron transport within the emissive layer, helping to lower the driving voltages and improve the light-emitting efficiency. However, excess aggregation of H2 would result in non-uniform dispersion of the FIrpic guest within the H2 host, leading to non-complete host-to-guest energy transfer and decreased electroluminescence performance. Through manipulation of the aggregates within the H2 host by varying the solvent mixture ratio, the trade off between charge transport and energy transfer is realized. Finally, the solution-processed blue PhOLED with optimized emissive layer morphology processed with toluene:p-xylene (9:1) solvent mixture achieves a high light-emitting efficiency of 27.8 cd A-1, corresponding to 25% enhancement compared to 22.2 cd A-1 of the control device processed with commonly used toluene solvent.

    • A polarization beam splitter based on a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab is presented. In the designed photonic crystal, the TE polarization is negatively refracted, while the TM polarization is positively refracted. The photonic crystal is composed of silicon pillars in a triangular lattice. The whole device is very compact (20x20 mu m(2)), and is compatible with the planar integration. The measurement results show that the extinction ratio is similar to 15dB from 1530 to 1610nm.
