  • The "New Negro" in the Old World : culture and performance in James Weldon Johnson, Jessie Fauset, and Nella Larsen
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • I denna avhandling studeras europaskildringarna i James Weldon Johnsons The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man (1912), Jessie Fausets There Is Confusion (1924) och Nella Larsens Quicksand (1928) och hur dessa speglar afrikansk-amerikanernas roll i den västerländska civilisationen.

  • Into the Isle of Self : Nietzschean Patterns and Contrasts in D. H. Lawrence's The Trespasser
  • 1996
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is based on a close reading of Lawrence's novel The Trespasser from a Nietzschean point of view. By adopting this perspective it aims at giving the novel the sense of unity it has so far been alleged to lack. The analysis is preceded by a detailed discussion of the concept of literary influence. Since the purpose of this study is to illuminate what is unique in Lawrence's novel rather than to claim any derivative use of Nietzsche's thought, the focus is on Lawrence's transformative and dynamic way of adopting Nietzschean themes in his novel. The Trespasser is read in its Edwardian context, with particular attention to the response that Nietzsche's philosophy met with 1900-1910. A separate section is devoted to the presentation of him in the Socialist weekly The New Age in 1908-09. The analysis of The Trespasser is conducted along two partly related lines of thought: the Apollonian-Dionysian dichotomy as it is presented by Nietzsche in The Birth of Tragedy, and the process towards a Dionysian awareness that is put forward in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. As is pointed out in chapter three, the Apollonian-Dionysian contrast is reflected chiefly in the characterization, setting, symbolism, and to some degree also in the action of the novel. In chapter four the actual progression of the plot is dealt with in terms of a Zarathustran journey and the light symbolism associated with it. Moreover, some of Lawrence's early poems are discussed in connection with Nietzschean parallels found in The Trespasser, with a view to emphasizing the pervasive influence of Nietzsche's ideas on the young Lawrence.

  • Echoing Texts: George Chapmans Conspiracy and Tragedy of Charles Duke of Byron
  • 2004
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Echoing Texts: George Chapmans Conspiracy and Tragedy of Charles Duke of Byron is an intertextual study, offering a close comparative exploration of the discourses behind Chapmans text and the text itself with a view to activating the interpretive potential of the intertextual links. Chapter 2 investigates the French chronicle material from Edward Grimestons General Inventorie and how Chapmans departures from this material influence our reading. Chapters 3 and 4 look at the effects of the classical subtexts, above all transpositions from Homers Iliad, Plutarchs Moralia and Senecas Oedipus, but also Lucans Pharsalia. Chapter 5 deals with the cultural and political negotiations in the double play, tracing references to the earl of Essex and his rebellion and allusions to topical isues of Stuart kingship. The intertextual reading projects a problematization of the concept of the patriarchal monarch and the absolute state and a veiling of the representative of liberty and individual heroism in a nostalgic light. Together with the overlays of meaning caused by the classical texts, the changes in the chronicle material and the topical allusions register an ideological stance. Repressed, represented in sometimes devious ways, Chapmans version of near-contemporay events nevertheless makes a powerful statement about the relationship between ruler and ruled, pointing to problems of contemporary statecraft.

  • Perspectives on fixedness: applied and theoretical
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is about fixedness, or the process whereby orthographic words group together and congeal into fixed expressions that might subsequently reduce and become single words. The discussion focuses on three levels: realization, conceptualization, and discourse. At the level of realization, substitution tests have traditionally been employed to ascertain degrees of fixedness in expressions. This method is evaluated with respect to expressions in adverb role (complex adverbs) and found to be inappropriate. At the conceptual level, the salience of word meanings, grammatical roles, and cohesive relations signalled in expressions are examined. It appears that there is a relationship between the overall level of salience in the expressions and the extent to which they are fixed. Reinterpretation and reanalysis at the level of discourse are motivating processes in the evolution of expressions. A unidirectional, cyclical cline of language change is proposed, and its relationship to the grammaticalization cline is discussed. The eclectic approach taken in the book serves the dual function of bridging the gap between applied and theoretical approaches to linguistic research (as the title suggests), and of highlighting fixedness as an area worthy of study in its own right.
