    • This study focuses primarily on the inflection of singular place-names belonging to strong declensions and how their inflection developed in the Old Swedish period. It is based mainly on sources from Södermanland.Examination of the dative inflections of masculine and neuter place-names suggests that by and large place-names underwent the same course of development as appellatives, the dative having almost completely disappeared as a formal category by the end of the Middle Ages. In some cases dative endings were, however, retained in place-names: for example, certain name elements tended to keep the ending when they occurred as simplexes, but lost it in compound names. The dative may then have become the general form of such names.A special study was made of iō-stem place-names. Even in the nominative, forms ending in -e and -a predominate. The -e ending derives from the dative/accusative form, which may have become a new basic form at an early date. Reinterpretation of the dative/accusative resulted in someplace-names passing into the weak declension. Via the dative/accusative singular ending, place-names also adopted the generalized -a form which developed in plural habitative names. In the Middle Ages a mode of inflection peculiar to place-names appeared. In Latin texts, Swedish place-names occur in a generalized form, used regardless of case. A suitable form was chosen, often an accusative which had converged with the nominative. Generalized forms of this kind are found in both Latin and Old Swedish texts. The Latin scribal tradition was a contributory factor in their introduction. The author discusses whether place-names can be shown to have changed paradigm earlier than appellatives. Secondary -s genitives in particular, which occur earlier in place-names than in appellatives, suggest that they did. The fact that place-names exhibit secondary -s genitives in early sources may be partly due to their naming function.

    • When topographical generics such as backe, berg, slänt and stalp are treated in literature and dialect records, their lexical meaning is often given without details and precise semantic distinctions. It is indicated by 'synonyms' and by established agreement with other words within the same semantic field, rarely by contrasting definite differences between the words. This can easily give an impression of a synonymity among topographical generics which is out of proportion to the great number of words in use. The main aim of this dissertation is to establish the exact meaning of words for heights and slopes in their two functions, as appellatives and as place-name elements. The study also aims atillustrating the necessity of field work, its problems and possible sources of errors.

    • The study of Swedish lake names may involve difficulties of many different kinds. The varying themes of the individual studies making up this thesis reflect the wide span of hydronymic research. Lake names can be structured morphologically, semantically, chronologically and geographically. In the thesis, the author attempts to bring out and shed light on more general patterns and questions relating to Swedish hydronyms. The primary, basic concern of research into Swedish lake names remains interpretation. The thesis proposes new interpretations of many names. An exploration of name etymologies naturally takes one into the areas of phonology, morphology and semantics. Phonology is one of the principal themes of chapter 3. Word formation by the addition of suffixes receives a great deal of attention in the first and concluding studies (ch. 2, ch. 8), while semantic typology forms the main theme of two other studies (ch. 4, ch. 6). Chapter 8 examines the original forms and subsequent development of lake names that now end in -aren. In this connection much attention is paid to morphological changes caused by analogy. The question of the distinction between primary and secondary name formation arises in all the chapters of the thesis. The question of formally primary and formally secondary lake names is another of the key problems in the complex area of name formation. Change of name, ellipsis and reduction—three phenomena critical to the study of hydronyms —are considered in all th estudies in the thesis.
