  • Att bli människa : Barn, sedlighet och kön i Amanda Kerfstedts, Helena Nybloms och Mathilda Mallings författarskap 1880-1910
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to analyze discourses of children, morality and gender in prose works for children and adults written between 1880 and 1910. Ten texts by Amanda Kerfstedt, Helena Nyblom and Mathilda Malling are studied. The main questions are: To what extent did writing for children or adults create different possibilities and restraints for the authors? Were ideas of morality and sexuality articulated differently in relation to children, women and men? What gender ideals were formulated through depictions of children’s upbringing? By foregrounding the role of children and children’s literature, a new perspective on the period is put forward. The analyses explore how changing ideas about family, femininity and virtue affected the way women wrote and how the literary establishment received their works. Some other important topics are the debate on children’s sex education in the 1880’s, the function of childhood in discourses of gender and sexuality, and the role of confession in 19th century society and literature. Conceptions of children, gender and morality are continuously redefined in Kerfstedt’s, Nyblom’s and Malling’s texts for children and adults. Varying ideals, ideas and practices are compared in the texts, which creates a space for change and negotiation. In contrast to previous research, this thesis shows that Swedish children’s and adult literature around the turn of the 20th century shared many themes and ideas. Although different aspects of the questions are put in focus, books for both audiences explore how a true man, woman or child should be, what defined a moral life and, ultimately, what it meant to be human.

  • Can adult education delay retirement from the Labour Market?
  • 2008
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Several studies have suggested that education is associated with later retirement from the labour market. In this paper, we examine whether adult education, involving enrolees aged 42 or above, delays retirement to potentially increase labour force participation among the elderly. With Swedish register data of transcripts from adult education and an-nual earnings, which encompasses 1979-2004 and 1982-2004 respectively, we exploit the fact that adult education is a large-scale phenomenon in Sweden and construct a measure of the timing of the transition from being self-supported by productive work to being supported by pension transfers. We match samples of treated and controls on the propen-sity score and use non-parametric estimation of survival rates. The results indicate that adult education has no effect on the timing of the retirement from the labour force. This can be contrasted with the fact that adult education is one of the cornerstones of the OECD strategy for “active ageing” and the European Union’s “Lisbon strategy” for growth and jobs.

  • Själens medium : Skrift och subjekt i Nordeuropa omkring 1500
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The era of the digital revolution has made it possible to acknowledge literature as a technological object, inseparable from its medium. This study attempts to outline the prerequisites of a material history of literature that does not focus primarily upon works or authors but rather on the media itself, the mnemotechnics and the practices of reading and writing that make such phenomena possible in the first place. More precisely, the thesis explores the historical process in which writing and its practices became a precondition for new forms of subjectivity that evolved around the turn of the sixteenth century in Northern Europe. The overall aim of the investigation is however not to analyze this process per se, but to offer a new perspective on how literature as we know it arises out of the media revolution of the fifteenth century.  By implication, the dissertation may be described as a genealogy of literature through the paradigm of technology. The study considers discursive practices – from elementary alphabetization to phantasmatic reading – and the way they contributed to the circulation of discourse in conjunction with the breakthrough of the print medium. Taken together, these elements are analyzed in terms of a discourse network – i.e. a network of technologies and institutions that allow a given culture to select, store, and process relevant data. The concept of a discourse network allows for an analysis that is receptive to the importance of technology and subjectivity as historically variable phenomena that may serve different functions: as source, as emitter, as channel, and as receiver of information. The analysis reveals seemingly timeless concepts like the author or the alleged transparency of the medium of writing as historical effects of the network. Further, it traces the powerful impetus of the notion of universal literacy to the rise of the state in the sixteenth century. Finally, it reveals literature as we know it as a product of displaced or alien powers of the past.

  • Visuella vändningar : Bild och estetik i Kerstin Ekmans romankonst
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is a dissertation on how an aesthetics of fiction is formulated at the intersection of, and oscillation between, image-construction and image-criticism in three novels by Kerstin Ekman: En stad av ljus (1983), Händelser vid vatten (1993), and Gör mig levande igen (1996). The purpose of the dissertation is to analyze the movement of this oscillation and demonstrate how it is intertwined, not only with the aesthetic practice characterizing these novels, but also with their interpretation of the past and the contemporary. Kerstin Ekman’s oeuvre formulates a criticism of images and their various representational forms (for example paintings, photographs, the images of virtual reality), while integrating different media’s aesthetic expressions by theme and narrative technique. Occasionally, images are represented as deserving credence, as possible to describe in words, but also with a faith in their power to animate or recreate the past, capture the moment and freeze time. But as often as being utilized as tools for creation, images are employed for careful aim of the critique of civilization that characterizes Ekman’s entire body of work. The tension between image-construction and image-criticism is intimately connected to the issues that at their core are bound up with the relation between verbal art and visual art which constitutes a fundamental trait of Ekman’s aesthetic practice. In addition to novels in various genres, Ekman has also worked with film, computer programming and hypertext. The interplay with other media is an important building block of Ekman’s fiction, and the classical opposition between verbal and visual arts is figured foremost through the camera, the film camera, and the computer. The dissertation also examines Ekman’s early fiction, from her debut novel, the detective story 30 meter mord (1959), to Mörker och blåbärsris (1972), and introduces the hypertext Hotagens minne (2006) and the computer game Rymdresa (1991).

  • Ingemar Hedenius heliga rum : Sofokles - Kierkegaard - Mozart
  • 2011
