  • Cardel Gertsen, Martine (författare)
  • Gustafs ansigter : selvfremstilling i Gustaf Munch-Petersens forfatterskab
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Danish-Swedish writer Gustaf Munch-Petersen (1912-1938) is considered one of the pioneers of Danish modernist poetry. His death at the age of 26 as a volunteer in the Spanish Civil War, a conflict that was later widely understood as a prelude to the Second World War, made him one of “the young dead” of Scandinavian literature. But this is only one among several pictures of him. Self and identity are underlying themes in much of his poetry and prose, and this thesis aims at elucidating “the faces of Gustaf”. By this metaphorical term I understand the ways in which Gustaf Munch-Petersen lets a self appear within the framework of a poem or a fictional prose text. My theoretical point of departure is hermeneutic and eclectic since I do not wish limit myself to a particular theoretical perspective, thereby inevitably cutting myself off from certain types of potential meaning. I draw on a wide range of different contexts discussed in the introductory chapter. Chapter 2 examines the legend of Gustaf Munch-Petersen as one of “the young dead” and tells a narrative of his life as it lends itself to reconstruction on the basis of his letters and other documentary material. Chapters 3 to 7 each deal with a “face” – five different, but interrelated types of self-representation. Each chapter is based on a cross section of Gustaf Munch-Petersen’s literary works and organized around analyses and interpretations of selected texts that are especially suited to shed light on self-presentation. Their headings are: “New man”, “Son”, “Lover”, “Saviour”, and “Artist”. These five literary faces all bear some relation to a marked undercurrent of longing for a radically different and renewed world, a theme which runs through Gustaf Munch-Petersen’s writing. If there is a uniting artistic driving force behind his literary faces, it is this: a self that in its literary creativity is constantly driven forward by a yearning towards a utopian vision and away from the constraints of individuality.

  • "Mitt hems gränser vidgades" : En studie i den kulturella skandinavismen under 1800-talet
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation investigates the cultural side of the very large movement that was Scandinavism. In Norway, Sweden, and Denmark Scandinavism fostered a great interest in the language and literature of the neighbouring countries. This interest emerged at the start of the nineteenth century, marking an about-turn after centuries of war. In six chapters the dissertation shows first how people at the start of the century studied the same kinds of Old Norse texts, which brought insight into shared roots and the fact that the languages had once been the same. Later, in the period 1843–1850, Scandinavism took on a political orientation. This is the orientation that has hitherto been in focus, particularly in historical research. It was, however, a short-lived movement that finally died out in 1864. Cultural Scandinavism, on the other hand, was on a much greater scale and was to be significant for very many authors, as the dissertation shows. C. J. L. Almqvist, H. C. Andersen, Fredrika Bremer, and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson are examples of authors who related in different ways to Scandinavism. All three wrote texts expressing Scandinavistic ideas, and their literary texts, letters, and speeches are examined here. As a way to systematize the elements of Scandinavism, the term “markers of Scandinavism” is used. These are also found, finally, in Georg Brandes, who was highly significant from the 1880s onwards as a critic throughout Scandinavia, not just in Denmark. The dissertation shows that Scandinavist ideas were instrumental in the spread of “the modern breakthrough” to the whole of Scandinavia. The sense of community that emerged helped to create a common “literary space”, to use an expression coined by Pascale Casanova, which the authors of the 1880s were able to exploit. The aims and ideas of cultural Scandinavism became generally accepted and are still significant. Finally, it is observed that many institutions for cultural cooperation today use exactly the same arguments for collaboration as were used in the nineteenth century.

  • Att gestalta en region : Källornas strategier och mediernas föreställningar om Öresund
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Öresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden was inaugurated in the year 2000, connecting the city of Malmö and the Danish capital Copenhagen. The bridge was an important move towards the visionary realisation of a transnational Öresund Region. In this dissertation the communicative aspects of the regional process are put in focus. The vision of the Öresund Region that developed during the 1990s is analysed as a mass mediated social construction, influenced by public relations and news management efforts. The aim is to describe, understand and reflect upon Danish and Swedish newspapers’ conceptions of the Öresund Region, focusing on the relationships between professional sources and these conceptions within a late modern social context. The dissertation is founded on a social constructionist epistemology. The empirical analysis is inspired by rhetorical and critical discourse analysis. The study is mainly based on qualitative interviews, quantitative and qualitative analysis of newspaper texts and secondary data (opinion polls). The qualitative interviews are done with journalists and important opinion and marketing actors. The content and text analysis is based on a strategically chosen sample of texts during 1991-2001 in the two major and dominant newspapers in the region, Sydsvenska Dagbladet, Berlingske Tidende and their supplement Öresundsnytt. Some conclusions may be mentioned here. When it comes to news management strategies the study shows that three different strategies have been regularly applied, namely a factual, a journalistic and a publicity strategy. The factual strategy, emphasizing logical arguments and the production of reports, surveys, analysis, books and seminars aimed towards opinion elites, has been most successful. The content analysis shows that the regional newspapers gave a very positive profile of the region – consensus -oriented, male and with growth and profit at its centre. The qualitative analysis also shows that national stereotypes and conceptions are common. The Öresund Region is mainly constructed through Swedish or Danish national perspectives. From a macrodiscourse level the communicated region is dominated by a national growth discourse where regional political-economical elites support local and national growth prior to other values. Other possible discourse formations (for example cosmopolitan, neo-liberal, neo-democratic and cultural historical framings) are seldom used in the analyzed mass media. The media formation of the Öresund Region is dominated by elite actors and has an auto-communicative character.
