  • 'Stay Awhile and Listen' : Understanding the Dynamics of Mediatization, Authority, and Literacy in Swedish Religious Education
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this article-based dissertation is to explore the role media play in Swedish Religious Education (RE). The purpose is to study Swedish RE teachers’ practices and how these can be related to various dynamics of mediatization, authority, and literacy. Conducted within the Teaching Religion in Late Modern Sweden project at Uppsala University, this study draws on a national survey, as well as semi-structured interviews and classroom observations with 22 RE teachers. Four specific research questions are posed, each addressed separately in four articles. (1) What kinds of media materials do Swedish RE teachers use in their teaching? (2) What kinds of media dynamics are present in RE classrooms where media materials are used? (3) How can RE teachers’ and students’ engagements with mediated religion be analysed from a multiple media literacies perspective? And, (4) how do RE teachers construct authority on religion in a mediatized situation? The first question is approached through a quantitative analysis of survey material, while the three remaining questions were analysed by the use of qualitative thematic analysis of the observations and interviews. The study finds that RE teachers in Sweden use and relate to various forms of media to a large extent in their daily teaching practices, and that these engagements with mediated religion illustrate the complex balance between the individual agency of the teacher on the one hand, and the media dynamics of amplification, framing and performative agency, and co-structuring, on the other. The teachers’ practices in relation to this are in the study viewed as a form of institutional work that is both caused by, and a contributing factor to, an increased mediatization of contemporary Swedish RE. The findings of the four articles are discussed in light of previous research on mediatization of religion in a Nordic context, specifically with regard to literacy and authority. The author argues that by studying these processes within an educational setting – a context that until recently has been under-explored within mediatization of religion research – the study provides new empirical as well as theoretical knowledge not only to the field of sociology of religion, but also to research on authority and religious education.

  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract

  • 2007
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The book investigates the connections between experiences of life lived with impairments and existential questions of belief and life in theory and praxis. The starting point for the book is the question of how the differences between living with, or without impairments are described. With the distinction between life with and without impairments there always follows an ambiguity. This book has chosen ICF as its model for understanding what disabilities are because this model is the most appropriate for this book’s way of approaching these questions. ICF is a model which leaves room for conflicts of interpretation and lacks precision. The first section of the book which includes chapters one to three discusses questions of history, politics and views of humanity. The first chapter discusses how a worldviews perspective can be used to comprehend how our understanding of the category “people with disabilities” came about. The second chapter on disability politics takes as its starting point those regulations in Swedish law which forbid discrimination on a number of grounds, including disability. Chapter three addresses the question of how anthropology and our understanding of what it is to be human, changes when experiences of living with disability are taken into account. The second part of the book discusses religious questions. The fourth chapter discusses how our perceptions of god can be influenced by experiences of a life with impairments. The fifth chapter comments upon how various biblical passages which touch on impairments should be interpreted. The sixth chapter discusses the ways in which experiences of life with suggestion impairments influences Christian theological anthropology. This book ends with something which can be called a slow departure from the discourse of disabilities. This means an attempt to leave behind all the stigmatizing and oppressive associations which are connected to that discourse.

  • Religion och politik i hybrida mediemiljöer : En analys av kommentarer till nyheter om Miljöpartiet, Kristdemokraterna och Sverigedemokraterna på Facebook
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation analyses the relationship between religion and politics, situated in hybrid media spaces in Sweden. This phenomenon is actualized by contestations over the visibility of religion in public spheres, in combination with changes in the Swedish political debate where conflicts related to the left/right scale increasingly come to focus more on value-based issues. Moreover, the effect of digitalization and new media forums, such as Facebook, have affected public conversation. The empirical material analyzed consists of approximately 20 000 Facebook comments, posted as reactions to articles published by five of the largest Swedish news media actors. The material concerns three specific media debates, regarding three Swedish political parties. They are chosen as examples of ways in the politicization of religion is expressed with regard to current changes regarding religion and politics in Sweden: The Green Party and the so-called handshaking controversy in spring 2016 including two Muslim politicians, the continuous media reports about The Christian Democrats and issues related to lgbtqi and abortion during 2015-2016, and The Sweden Democrats and the internal Church election for The Church of Sweden in 2017. The analysis is conducted through critical discourse analysis, combining methods for distant and close reading, such as co-occurrence analysis, topic modelling, the rhetorical triangle and modality. The result is analyzed through a theoretical framework, which includes the theory of politicization of religion, focusing on religion as object and subject in political debate, and as a resource or source of conflict in border disputes. In addition, the concept of civilizationism is used to analyze how religion is actively used in the construction of national identity. The theory of mediatization of religion is operationalized through the dynamics of mediatized conflicts, together with a focus on emotions as a form of subactivism. The result contributes to previous research on religion and politics in the Nordic countries by demonstrating how politicization of religion is taking place in various but interrelated ways in three hybrid media discussions. A significant aspect uncovered by the analysis is how the hybrid media milieu contributes to structuring the form as well as the content of the analyzed discussions.

  • Voices of Muslim Feminists : Navigating Tradition, Authority and the Debate about Islam
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Drawing on in-depth interviews with women in Sweden and the Øresund region who have publicly positioned themselves as believing Muslim feminists, this study explores what is involved in their self-positioning, how they conceptualize Muslim feminism, and construct its meaning. The accounts of the participants in this study revolve around three broad themes: First, the aspiration for self-representation as Muslims, second, the negotiations on gender equality and Islam, and third, the negotiation between internal and external religious authority. Analyzing how the participants approach these themes, this study traces how they construct the meaning of Muslim feminism through complex processes of navigating between the authority of the self, the Islamic discursive tradition and the essentialist and politicized debate about Islam and Muslims. In direct response to the sociology of religion’s focus on questions surrounding the meaning of religion in modern society, this relationship is investigated through a critical engagement with the theoretical framework of religious individualization, exploring the forms of religiosity accounted for by the participants, and how these are produced by and impact their positioning as Muslim feminists. Underlying the framework of religious individualization is the basic assumption that modernization does not necessarily lead to the marginalization of religion in people’s lives; rather religiosity is taking new forms, and is becoming increasingly subjective, private, syncretistic, and detached from traditional religious authority. This study argues that religiosity and religiously framed agency marked by notions of individualization, such as autonomy and authenticity, also can host religious commitments and deference to external religious authority; and while religion might on the one hand be seen as a private affair, how it is lived and conceptualized is in many ways determined by discourses and realities outside of this realm. Finally, rather than individualized religiosity, this study argues that the participants’, in many ways diverging manifestations of religiosity, and interlinked and coproduced understandings of Muslim feminism, are better described in terms of a relationship with the foundational religious texts, shaped in interplay with power, authority and time, premised on, formed by and reactive to the multifarious politics of gender equality in Sweden and Denmark, the politicized debate about Muslims and Islam, a secular order, and the ideals and conditions of individualism more broadly.

  • Paranormal Sweden? : Paranormal beliefs and practices in contemporary Sweden
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation aims to study the contemporary occurrence of paranormal beliefs, activities and experiences in Sweden as well as a paraculture of practices dedicated to these issues, with a particular focus on issues of knowledge and authority. The study is placed against the backdrop of academic and popular claims that paranormal beliefs, activities and experiences are not only common but are also on the rise. A quantitative survey targets a representative sample of Swedish adults (n=1101) and assesses the relation between demographic characteristics and paranormal beliefs and practices. The survey is complemented with fieldwork in the form of participant observation and semi-structured interviews in the paraculture. More specifically, settings and organizations related to mediumship, cryptozoology, ghost hunting, parapsychology and ufology are studied as cases of paranormal practice. The data is analyzed in relation to theorizations of occulture and epistemic authority, the latter by combining the concepts of epistemic capital and boundary-work. The findings point to gender (i.e., being female) and the number of recent occultural contact points as the strongest predictors of paranormal beliefs, activities and experiences. In the paraculture, participants are prone to appeal to different strategies of epistemic capital depending on the setting they were recruited from. One notable result is that while most participants and groups relied on counter-epistemic strategies, such strategies are combined with conventional strategies of science-like and traditional strategies of epistemic capital. Paranormal practice, distinctly epistemic, accordingly becomes a case of how knowledge-making on contested and controversial phenomena may take form in light of the tectonic social and cultural shifts implied by modernization.
