  • Intergenerational Earnings Mobility Among Daughters and Sons : Evidence from Sweden and a Comparison with the United States
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: The American journal of economics and sociology. - Hoboken, New Jersey : Blackwell-Wiley. - 0002-9246 .- 1536-7150. ; 67:5, s. 777-826
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper adopts Chadwick and Solon's (2002) model by using family earnings in the study of intergenerational earnings mobility with a highlight on the role of assortative mating. I analyze mean and quantile regression coefficients as well as transition matrices to investigate family earnings mobility between parents and daughters, and parents and sons from Swedish register data. My findings indicate that Sweden has a higher degree of mobility compared to the U.S., and that assortative mating also plays an important role as a channel through which income status is transmitted across generations in Sweden. However, the difference in intergenerational mobility patterns between the two countries does not, inherently, depend on factors that affect the marriage match. Swedish daughters and sons exhibit a rather similar scheme of intergenerational earnings transmission. Daughters tend to be slightly more mobile than sons and the difference between their elasticity estimates is small but statistically significant. The quantile regression approach reveals that parents' family earnings are less important as explanatory variable at the upper end of the children's earnings distribution than it is at the bottom, while transition matrices show substantial earnings persistence in the top earnings class.

  • Becoming a winner but staying the same : identities and consumption of lottery winners
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The American journal of economics and sociology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0002-9246 .- 1536-7150. ; 70:1, s. 187-209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses how large lottery winnings are experienced and used by the winners. The study draws on a survey of 420 Swedish winners, which is analyzed against the background of previous research from the USA and Europe. The analyses show that winners are cautious about realizing any dreams of becoming someone else somewhere else. This result contradicts theories suggesting that identities are being liquefied by the commercially driven consumer culture in affluent Western societies. In contrast, the article concludes that winners generally try to stay much the same, but on a somewhat higher level of consumption. The critical situation that large winnings produce is generally met by an attempt to hold on to one’s identity and social relations. In addition, the article shows that lump sum winners tend to save and invest large parts of their winnings, compared with winners of monthly installments who are more likely to spend on leisure and consumption. These results indicate that “wild” lump sums make winners “tame” their winnings more firmly, whereas “domesticated” monthly instalments can be spent more thoughtlessly without changing identity or becoming an unfortunate winner.

  • Alfred Marshall and the Concept of Class
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The American journal of economics and sociology. - 0002-9246 .- 1536-7150. ; 69:1, s. 151-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to analyze Alfred Marshall's concept of class. Marshall's concept of class is not well-studied. His idea of class is different from what Weber and Marx have proposed. In contrast to many other economists, he has a discussion of class that is developed. It is shown that Marshall sees classes as made up of people whose work offers similar chances of developing their higher faculties. An integrated idea is that different class positions are associated with different discount rates of future outcomes. Marshall's class theory combines physical and mental components.

  • Corporate Responsibility and the Collegial Field
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The American journal of economics and sociology. - : Wiley. - 0002-9246 .- 1536-7150. ; 73:1, s. 84-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is based on 21 interviews of informants actively engaged with corporate responsibility in Sweden. The article introduces a new conceptthe collegial fieldwhich is helpful in understanding the course of events. With systems that are more open to other organizations, horizontal groupings with common interests become more influential. Collegial fields can also be relevant for understanding other activities in organizations than corporate responsibility.

  • On Indirect Reciprocity: The Distinction between Reciprocity and Altruism, and a Comment on Suicide Terrorism
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: The American Journal of Economics and Sociology. - : Blackwell Publishing. - 0002-9246. ; 63:5, s. 1193-1212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Indirect reciprocity, defined as a beneficial act whose return comes from someone other than the act's recipient, is a common phenomenon in human societies. However, it is a poorly analyzed phenomenon with respect to payoffs. Are the expectations of return realistic, or not? Are these expectations pro-social attitudes, or illusions induced through manipulation? I discuss four categories of putative indirect reciprocity, two of which pertain to interaction between individuals and two of which involve social systems. The conclusion is that two of these categories, reciprocal reputation and institutionalized reciprocity, are strongly linked to reciprocity, whereas the other two categories, generous reputation and metaphysical reward, are likely to involve only an element of illusionary reciprocity and a substantial degree of altruism.
