  • Combining multiple matchers for fingerprint verification : A case study in biosecure network of excellence
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Annales des télécommunications. - Paris, France : Springer. - 0003-4347 .- 1958-9395. ; 62:1-2, s. 62-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on experiments for the fingerprint modality conducted during the First BioSecure Residential Workshop. Two reference systems for fingerprint verification have been tested together with two additional non-reference systems. These systems follow different approaches of fingerprint processing and are discussed in detail. Fusion experiments involving different combinations of the available systems are presented. The experimental results show that the best recognition strategy involves both minutiae-based and correlation-based measurements. Regarding the fusion experiments, the best relative improvement is obtained when fusing systems that are based on heterogeneous strategies for feature extraction and/or matching. The best combinations of two/three/four systems always include the best individual systems whereas the best verification performance is obtained when combining all the available systems.

  • The next-generation ARC middleware
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: ANNALS OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS-ANNALES DES TELECOMMUNICATIONS. - : Presses Polytechniques Romandes. - 0003-4347 .- 1958-9395. ; 65:11-12, s. 771-776
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Advanced Resource Connector (ARC) is a light-weight, non-intrusive, simple yet powerful Grid middleware capable of connecting highly heterogeneous computing and storage resources. ARC aims at providing general purpose, flexible, collaborative computing environments suitable for a range of uses, both in science and business. The server side offers the fundamental job execution management, information and data capabilities required for a Grid. Users are provided with an easy to install and use client which provides a basic toolbox for job- and data management. The KnowARC project developed the next-generation ARC middleware, implemented as Web Services with the aim of standard-compliant interoperability.

  • Cross-layer design of multiple antenna multicast combining AMC with truncated HARQ
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Annales des télécommunications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0003-4347 .- 1958-9395. ; 65:11-12, s. 803-815
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Combining adaptive modulation and coding with truncated hybrid automatic request, this paper presents a cross-layer design for multiple antenna multicast over a common radio channel. In the design, the modulation and coding scheme of a multicast packet is selected based on the minimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the multicast group in such a way that the constraint on the packet loss rate is satisfied for all users in the group. A general expression for the throughput of the proposed design is derived in frequency-flat fading channel environment and specific results in Rayleigh, Nakagami, and Rician fading channels are provided. It is shown that the proposed multicast design provides a significant throughput gain compared to the unicast counterpart, in particular, in the mid- to high SNR region. It is also shown that a larger value of the diversity order, Nakagami parameter, and Rician factor is more beneficial to multicast than to unicast.

  • Biosecure reference systems for on-line signature verification : A study of complementarity
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Annales des télécommunications. - : Springer. - 0003-4347 .- 1958-9395. ; 62:1-2, s. 36-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present an integrated research study in On-line Signature Verification undertaken by several teams that participate in the BioSecure Network of Excellence. This integrated work, started during the First BioSecure Residential Workshop, has as main objective the development of an On-line Signature Verification evaluation platform. As a first step, four On-line Signature Verification Systems based on different approaches are evaluated and compared following the same experimental protocol on MCYT signature database, which is the largest existing on-line western signature database publicly available with 16 500 signatures from 330 clients. A particular focus of work documented in this paper is multi-algorithmic fusion in order to study the complementarity of the approaches involved. To this end, a simple fusion method based on the Mean Rule is used after a normalization phase.

  • A distributed MAC scheme to achieve QoS in ad hoc networks
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Annales des Télécommunications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1958-9395. ; 66:9-10, s. 491-500
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Real-time applications introduce new requirements on wireless networks and impose quality thresholds on parameters like delay, jitter, throughput, and packet loss in order to run smoothly. This paper addresses this issue by presenting a MAC scheme that offers real-time applications the opportunity to reserve transmission time based on their QoS requirements for contention-free medium access. Our scheme, which is called EDCA with Resource Reservation (EDCA/RR), operates in a fully distributed manner, is compatible with IEEE 802.11, and provides both prioritized and parameterized QoS. In this study, we have extended EDCA/RR to handle reservation collisions and, through extensive simulations, we show that our proposal can handle multiple reservations as well as uninformed stations that lie outside the transmission range of both the transmitter and the receiver while providing QoS guarantees. We compare EDCA/RR with EDCA and our results show that, as the traffic in the network increases, EDCA/RR succeeds providing the required service to QoS-demanding applications whereas EDCA fails in this task. In addition, when the medium is lossy we show that, not only does EDCA/RR give better service to real-time traffic, but also to contending non-real-time traffic.

  • Error Propagation in Adaptation Algorithms with Poorly Exciting Signals
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Annales des télécommunications. - : Springer. - 0003-4347 .- 1958-9395. ; 41:5-6, s. 322-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The propagation of single numerical errors is studied for several different adaptation algorithms for linear regression problems. The case where the regressors are poorly exciting (the information matrix is singular or close to singular) is of particular interest. It is shown how appropriate regularization algorithms may secure exponential stability of the error propagation (and of the propagation of initial conditions in general). Gradient and Gauss-Newton algorithms with forgetting factors as well as directional forgetting are studied.

  • AutoSAC: automatic scaling and admission control of forwarding graphs
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Annales des Telecommunications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1958-9395 .- 0003-4347.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a strong industrial drive to use cloud computing technologies and concepts for providing timing sensitive services in the networking domain since it would provide the means to share the physical resources among multiple users and thus increase the elasticity and reduce the costs. In this work, we develop a mathematical model for user-stateless virtual network functions forming a forwarding graph. The model captures uncertainties of the performance of these virtual resources as well as the time-overhead needed to instantiate them. The model is used to derive a service controller for horizontal scaling of the virtual resources as well as an admission controller that guarantees that packets exiting the forwarding graph meet their end-to-end deadline. The Automatic Service and Admission Controller (AutoSAC) developed in this work uses feedback and feedforward making it robust against uncertainties of the underlying infrastructure. Also, it has a fast reaction time to changes in the input.
