  • Environmental assessment and scenario analysis of sugar beet transport in Scania, Sweden
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Area. - : Wiley. - 0004-0894 .- 1475-4762. ; 40:4, s. 459-471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim was to assess the environmental sustainability of sugar beet transport in Scania, Sweden—estimating lorry travel distances, fuel use and air emissions. Scenario analyses measuring the same parameters for switching to newer vehicle types and differing ratios of biodiesel were also performed. The method applied for distance calculations was a GIS-based proximity analysis. Results revealed that 4 249 thousand km were traveled in the movement of beets to processing facilities. Results among others also showed that 2 200 m3 of diesel were consumed and 5 700 tons of CO2 were released. Scenario analyses revealed there is a potential to decrease fuel usage and transport emissions with the shift to newer vehicle types and bio-based fuels, but that the amount of land needed to grow the bio-based feedstock presents a large hindrance to wider scale use.

  • Monthly estimates of carbon dioxide emissions from fossil-fuel consumption in Brazil during the late 1990s and early 2000s
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Area (London 1969). - : Wiley. - 0004-0894 .- 1475-4762. ; 38:4, s. 445-452
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Detailed understanding of global carbon cycling requires estimates of CO2 emissions on temporal and spatial scales finer than annual and country. This is the first attempt to derive such estimates for a large, developing, Southern Hemisphere country. Though data on energy use are not complete in terms of time and geography, there are enough data available on the sale or consumption of fuels in Brazil to reasonably approximate the temporal and spatial patterns of fuel use and CO2 emissions. Given the available data, a strong annual cycle in emissions from Brazil is not apparent. CO2 emissions are unevenly distributed within Brazil as the population density and level of development both vary widely.

  • Rethinking community and public space from the margins : a study of community libraries in Bangalore's slums
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Area (London 1969). - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0004-0894 .- 1475-4762. ; 44:3, s. 336-343
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth of slums in urban regions of the Global South is an issue of major concern for a variety of fields. These rapid urban changes are presenting a myriad of challenges, including the provision of social and educational services to urban populations that are often invisible to the gaze of the state. One issue that is not often discussed in slums is the role that educational spaces and places can play in facilitating community development. Specifically, this article discusses the case of community libraries in the slums of Bangalore, India. Community libraries, while only part of a larger empowerment and development strategy, can play an important role in providing a sense of place and belonging. The libraries that are part of this case study are focused on providing services to children, which in certain respects creates wider community support.

  • A spectrum of methods for a spectrum of risk : Generating evidence to understand and reduce urban risk in sub‐Saharan Africa
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Area (London 1969). - : Wiley. - 0004-0894 .- 1475-4762. ; 51:3, s. 586-594
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many African towns and cities face a range of hazards, which can best be described as representing a “spectrum of risk” of events that can cause death, illness or injury, and impoverishment. Yet despite the growing numbers of people living in African urban centres, the extent and relative severity of these different risks is poorly understood. This paper provides a rationale for using a spectrum of methods to address this spectrum of risk, and demonstrates the utility of mixed‐methods approaches in planning for resilience. It describes activities undertaken in a wide‐ranging multi‐country programme of research, which use multiple approaches to gather empirical data on risk, in order to build a stronger evidence base and provide a more solid base for planning and investment. It concludes that methods need to be chosen in regard to social, political economic, biophysical and hydrogeological context, while also recognising the different levels of complexity and institutional capacity in different urban centres. The paper concludes that as well as the importance of taking individual contexts into account, there are underlying methodological principles – based on multidisciplinary expertise and multi‐faceted and collaborative research endeavours – that can inform a range of related approaches to understanding urban risk in sub‐Saharan Africa and break the cycle of risk accumulation.

  • Meeting the 'organs' : The tacit dilemma of field research in authoritarian states
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Area (London 1969). - Hoboken : Wiley. - 0004-0894 .- 1475-4762. ; 45:4, s. 426-432
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To the regret of many scholars, science and politics often overlap, and nowhere as clearly as inside countries ruled by authoritarian governments, where research tends to attract the surveillance of repressive authorities and, more specifically, of the secret services (known as the 'organ' within post-communist space). While such surveillance places significant ethical and methodological challenges on field research, it is rarely discussed in the literature. This paper discusses what may happen when the organ takes interest in fieldwork. Based on the author's experiences in a range of post-communist countries, the aim is to present and discuss the related risks, and to show how these may materialise in relation to the organ's (c)overt activities.

  • Aesthetic labour in creative industries: the case of independent musicians in Toronto, Canada
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Area. - : Wiley. - 1475-4762 .- 0004-0894. ; 46:1, s. 66-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we examine the changing nature of aesthetic labour in creative industries. Drawing on a case study of independent musicians in Toronto, we argue that the spatiality and temporality of aesthetic labour has shifted as a result of technological change in the music industry and the decline of record labels. In particular, we demonstrate that aesthetic labour in the music industry has become more time-intensive and takes place across a growing range of spaces, including the stage, the home and online. This paper contributes to existing studies in geography that consider the spatial dynamics and precarious conditions of creative labour.

  • Adaptive scholarship and situated knowledges? Hybrid methodologies and plural epistemologies in climate change adaptation research
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Area. - : Wiley. - 0004-0894 .- 1475-4762. ; 48, s. 41-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change, along with other so-called global challenges, demands that scholars work across disciplines. Drawing on Donna Haraway's idea of situated knowledges, this paper develops an approach to mixing disciplines by engaging in epistemological pluralism, or approaching a research problem through more than one way of conceptualising it. The example of climate change adaptation planning in Nepal is used to show how a hybrid methodology research design requires thinking through what can be known and also what cannot be known by using a particular method. The main argument is that it is not possible to prove methodologically which conceptualisation or analytical entry point is better than another. Rather, new insights are gained both by triangulating data from different methods, and by probing the ways that they present contradictory results. An interdisciplinary research design is therefore used as a kind of kaleidoscope wherein plural epistemologies help to reveal new, albeit partial and situated, patterns.

  • Privacy challenges in geodata and open data
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Area (London 1969). - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0004-0894 .- 1475-4762.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a discussion of the emerging ethical issue of geodata privacy in geographical research. The paper highlights the importance of considering challenges to privacy when working with geographically explicit data and explores explicit ways in which researchers and practitioners can be conscious of these issues. Through summarising the key problems in this area and presenting outstanding open research areas and questions from a seminar series on geodata privacy, we highlight important considerations for future research in this field. We focus on the specific topics of appropriate anonymization, responsible data dissemination, the balance between data sharing and privacy, and the challenges posed by working across international contexts. We conclude by recommending approaches to manage various legal and ethical frameworks, raise the importance of the international context, and inspire future research to address the challenges of safeguarding sensitive geodata while promoting openness and transparency.

  • Gendered youth strategies for inclusion in a changing society : breaking or reproducing the local gender contract?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Area (London 1969). - : Wiley. - 0004-0894 .- 1475-4762. ; 50:4, s. 520-528
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores how place and gender relations influence young people's ways of formulating their struggles and negotiations related to education, work, family, everyday life and achievement of certain life goals. In addition, the paper examines key municipal officials' viewpoints, opening up a space for exchange and development at the interface of policy actions and young people's embodied lives. It is shown that young men and women alike are aware of the challenge to deconstruct hegemonic notions of gender. The focus is on societal changes and young people's educational and work strategies in Dalarna, Central Sweden. Historically, this county was dependent on steel, iron and paper industries: traditionally male employment sectors. Transformation of the labour market is involving new trends and expectations. A result is that gender relations associated with place-specific, as well as general, assumptions about masculinity and femininity are becoming increasingly fluid while their discursive strength remains.
