  • Dual polarised multibeam antenna
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Electronics Letters. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). - 0013-5194 .- 1350-911X. ; 35:25, s. 2158-2160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A dual polarised four-beam antenna array for the 1850-1990 MHz frequency band is presented. The polarisations are ±45° to vertical. The antenna has eight inputs corresponding to two orthogonal polarisations and four beams. The return loss and cross-polar isolation for a single Butler beam exceeds 15 and 22 dB, respectively. The radiation pattern is similar to an ideal Butler pattern and the cross-polarisation level is <-21 dB in the beams

  • Compensation for saturation effects in FIR-NLMS system identification
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Electronics Letters. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). - 0013-5194 .- 1350-911X. ; 34:4, s. 411-412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An adaptive scheme is derived to be used in combination with the normalised least mean squares algorithm for finite impulse response models (FIR-NLMS), to combat nonlinear imperfections of the plant to be identified. The scheme is shown to outperform FIR-NLMS when a test system that consists of a variable static nonlinearity in cascade with a linear filter is identified.

  • The change in mathematics teachers' perceptions of critical thinking after 15 years of educational reform in Jordan
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Educational Studies in Mathematics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0013-1954 .- 1573-0816. ; 64:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates how mathematics secondary schools' teachers in \hbox{Jordan} perceive critical thinking and compares teachers' perceptions before and after educational reform. Data were collected from 12 schools twice: in 1988 and in 2004 by interviewing 47 Mathematics teachers. The interview included questions related to teachers' understanding of critical thinking, its role and importance in learning Mathematics, and instructional strategies that could help improve students' critical thinking skills. Results found no improvement in secondary Mathematics teachers' perceptions of critical thinking despite 15 years of educational reform. The majority of Mathematics teachers seemed not to have a clear and adequate understanding of critical thinking. Though most of the teachers claimed they have to teach critical thinking, more than half of them could not suggest any learning situation that could help in fostering critical thinking in Mathematics classes. Also most of the teachers claimed that critical thinking would help students in learning Mathematics; yet less than half were able to give a convincing justification for that. A small percentage of the secondary Mathematics teachers believed they can help all students to foster their critical thinking. It is thus recommended that the concept of critical thinking be transferred from the realm of rhetoric to the field of practice. The paper ends with some recommendations related to the Mathematics teachers training programs in view of the results of this study.

  • Numbers don’t speak for themselves : strategies of using numbers in public policy discourse
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Educational Studies in Mathematics. - : Springer. - 0013-1954 .- 1573-0816. ; 108:3, s. 579-596
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In mathematics education, there is general agreement regarding the significance of mathematical literacy (also quantitative literacy or numeracy) for informed citizenship, which often requires evaluating the use of numbers in public policy discourse. We hold that such an evaluation must accommodate the necessarily fragile relation between the information that numbers are taken to carry and the policy decisions they are meant to support. In doing so, attention needs to be paid to differences in how that relation is formed. With this in mind, we investigated a public discourse that heavily relied on numbers in the context of introducing, maintaining, and easing the rules and regulations directed to contain the spread of the virus SARS-CoV-2 during the first epidemic wave of COVID-19 in Germany with its peak in early April 2020. We used a public-service broadcasting outlet as data. Our theoretical stance is affiliated with post-structuralist discourse theory. As an outcome, we identified four major related strategies of using numbers, which we named rationalisation, contrast, association and recharging. In our view explicit attention to these strategies as well as identifying new ones can aid the task of furthering critical mathematical literacy.

  • Proliferative and protective effects of growth hormone secretagogues on adult rat hippocampal progenitor cells.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Endocrinology. - : The Endocrine Society. - 0013-7227 .- 1945-7170. ; 149:5, s. 2191-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Progenitor cells in the subgranular zone of the hippocampus may be of significance for functional recovery after various injuries because they have a regenerative potential to form new neuronal cells. The hippocampus has been shown to express the GH secretagogue (GHS) receptor 1a, and recent studies suggest GHS to both promote neurogenesis and have neuroprotective effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether GHS could stimulate cellular proliferation and exert cell protective effects in adult rat hippocampal progenitor (AHP) cells. Both hexarelin and ghrelin stimulated increased incorporation of (3)H-thymidine, indicating an increased cell proliferation. Furthermore, hexarelin, but not ghrelin, showed protection against growth factor deprivation-induced apoptosis, as measured by annexin V binding and caspase-3 activity and also against necrosis, as measured by lactate dehydrogenase release. Hexarelin activated the MAPK and the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt pathways, whereas ghrelin activated only the MAPK pathway. AHP cells did not express the GHS receptor 1a, but binding studies could show specific binding of both hexarelin and ghrelin, suggesting effects to be mediated by an alternative GHS receptor subtype. In conclusion, our results suggest a differential effect of hexarelin and ghrelin in AHP cells. We have demonstrated stimulation of (3)H-thymidine incorporation with both hexarelin and ghrelin. Hexarelin, but not ghrelin, also showed a significant inhibition of apoptosis and necrosis. These results suggest a novel cell protective and proliferative role for GHS in the central nervous system.

  • Vanity and Congestion : A Study of Reciprocal Externalities
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Economica. - : JSTOR. - 0013-0427 .- 1468-0335. ; 63:249, s. 97-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper models a private goods oligopoly market characterized by negative and reciprocal externalities. Although firms compete in prices, and products are undifferentiated in equilibrium, the price-cost margin turns out to be positive. From a social perspective, the equilibrium price is higher than what is motivated by the negative externality. Hence welfare can be improved by means of a price ceiling. Finally, industries with high fixed costs would be expected to exhibit a high degree of concentration on the supply side and considerable price-cost margins.

  • Life skills for ‘real life’: How critical thinking is contextualised across vocational programmes
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Educational Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0013-1881 .- 1469-5847. ; 61:3, s. 302-318
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background This article presents an analysis of how critical thinking is contextualised in everyday teaching in three vocational education and training (VET) programmes: Vehicle and transport, Restaurant and management, and Health and social care. Purpose The main question addressed is: What knowledge discourses permeate different VET-contexts, and hence what kinds of opportunities for critical thinking do they offer students? Method The qualitative analysis draws on data from a four-year ethnographic project exploring learning processes that can be characterised as civic education in Swedish vocational education. The analysis presented here used data collected during 85 days ofcobservations of teaching in six VET classes, interviews with 81 students and 10 teachers, and collected teaching material. To explore why some contextualisations provided more opportunities and encouragement for critical thinking than others, we applied Bernsteinian concepts of ‘horizontal and vertical knowledge discourses’ and ‘discursive gaps’. Findings and conclusions Overall, teaching that was observed focused primarily on ‘doing’. However, in all three programmes, the analysis identified that there were also situations that touched upon critical thinking. Three major themes were identified: critical thinking related to ‘Personal experiences’, ‘The other(s)’ and ‘Wider perspectives’. It appeared that the frequency and nature of such situations varied with the knowledge discourses permeating the programme. Furthermore, we discuss the manifestations of critical thinking in relation to the wider context of what Bernstein refers to as pedagogic rights; individual enhancement, social inclusion and development of the competence and confidence to participate in political processes.

  • Effects of Governance on Availability of Land for Agriculture and Conservation in Brazil
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science & Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 49:17, s. 10285-10293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 2012 revision of the Brazilian Forest Act changed the relative importance of private and public governance for nature conservation and agricultural production. We present a spatially explicit land-use model for Brazilian agricultural production and nature conservation that considers the spatial distribution of agricultural land suitability, technological and management options, legal command, and control frameworks including the Atlantic Forest Law, the revised Forest Act, and the Amazonian land-titling, "Terra Legal," and also market-driven land use regulations. The model is used to analyze land use allocation under three scenarios with varying priorities among agricultural production and environmental protection objectives. In all scenarios, the legal command and control frameworks were the most important determinants of conservation outcomes, protecting at least 80% of the existing natural vegetation. Situations where such frameworks are not expected to be effective can be identified and targeted for additional conservation (beyond legal requirements) through voluntary actions or self-regulation in response to markets. All scenarios allow for a substantial increase in crop production, using an area 1.5-2.7 times the current cropland area, with much of new cropland occurring on current pastureland. Current public arrangements that promote conservation can, in conjunction with voluntary schemes on private lands where conversion to agriculture is favored, provide important additional nature conservation without conflicting with national agricultural production objectives. (Figure Presented).
