  • Impaired glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, enhanced IP insulin tolerance and increased {beta}-cell mass in mice lacking the p110{gamma} isoform of PI3-kinase.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Endocrinology. - : The Endocrine Society. - 0013-7227 .- 1945-7170. ; 145:9, s. 4078-4083
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3 kinase) has been implicated in G protein-coupled receptor regulation of pancreatic ß-cell growth and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. The G protein-activated p110{gamma} isoform of PI3 kinase was detected in insulinoma cells, mouse islets, and human islets. In 7- to 10-wk-old mice, knockout of p110{gamma} reduced the plasma insulin response to ip glucose injection and impaired first and second phase glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from pancreata perfused ex vivo. The p110{gamma} –/– mice responded to preinjection with the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist exendin 4, such that plasma glucose and insulin responses to ip glucose injection were not different from wild types. Mice lacking p110{gamma} were not diabetic and were only slightly glucose intolerant (ip glucose injection) compared with wild types, in part due to enhanced responsiveness to insulin as determined by an ip insulin tolerance test. Despite severely reduced insulin secretion in these animals, the p110{gamma} –/– mice had greater pancreatic insulin content, and an increased ß-cell mass due to ß-cell hypertrophy. These surprising results suggest that the G protein-coupled p110{gamma} isoform of PI3 kinase is not central to the development or maintenance of sufficient ß-cell mass but positively regulates glucose-stimulated insulin secretion.

  • Endoscopy-assisted capsule endoscopy in patients with swallowing disorders.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Endoscopy. - : Georg Thieme Verlag KG. - 1438-8812 .- 0013-726X. ; 36:8, s. 746-747
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Capsule endoscopy (CE) has greatly facilitated the diagnosis of small-bowel lesions in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding [1]. It was recently reported by Hollerbach et al. [2] that endoscopically assisted video capsule endoscopy facilitates the investigation of the small bowel in patients with functional gastric outlet obstruction. Swallowing difficulties, which are not uncommon in elderly patients, may also make it difficult to carry out CE [3]. To avoid this, we have successfully tested a modified approach to CE in these patients.

  • A study on PVdF-based SiO2-containing composite gel-type polymer electrolytes for lithium batteries
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Electrochimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0013-4686. ; 50:2-3, s. 357-361
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several gel membranes of the type PVdF/EC-PC/SiO 2 without and with electrolyte salts have been characterised by vibrational spectroscopy and by galvanostatic cycling tests. It is found that the structure of the PVdF matrix in the membranes depends on the gel composition and preparation conditions. At high loads of polymer parts of the PVdF chains assume a TGTG' conformation typical of the so-called "structural form II". The formation of PVdF of form II is favoured when slow cooling rates are employed during the membrane preparation. In galvanostatic cycling tests in combination with a Sn/SnSb electrode, the present gel-type polymer electrolytes give results comparable to those obtained with the corresponding liquid electrolytes. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. • Two-Phase Flow Analysis in a Cathode Duct of PEFCs
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Electrochimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0013-4686. ; 50:2-3, s. 677-683
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A three-dimensional calculation method has been further developed to include two-phase, multi-component gas and heat transport processes. A set of momentum, heat transport and gas species equations have been solved for the whole duct by coupled source terms and variable thermophysical properties. The effects of the electrochemical reactions on the heat generation and mass consumption/generation have been taken into account as well. Liquid water saturation and its effects on the local current density has been predicted based on the calculated values of water vapor partial pressure and temperature. The unique fuel cell conditions, such as the combined thermal boundary conditions and mass transfer, have been employed as well. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Comparison between fMRI and Wada test
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Epilepsia. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0013-9580 .- 1528-1167. ; 45:Suppl. 3, s. 84-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Language lateralisation in patients with epilepsy is more often atypical compared to a normal population. The Wada procedure for testing language and memory has some shortcomings; it is invasive and there is always a risk that the patient becomes too sedated, leading to difficulties in performing the tests. fMR1have shown promising results, showing good correlation to the Wadaprocedure concerning language-lateralisation. The aim of this studywas to investigate if fMRI could be used to determine which hemisphere was language dominant and compare the fMR1 results with the Wada-tests with a focus on patients with a complicated lateralisation.Method: 4 subjects were tested and they had a heterogeneous (I left handed, I ambidexter and 2 right handed) lateralisation and one had a severe dyslexia. A standard Wada procedure was used and compared with a fMRl investigation using a language paradigm. Results: The patients studied showed different language lateralisation patterns (2 left hemisphere and 2 bilateral). In two patients the two tests were fully concordant, in the others the fMRI showed a more bilateral pattern. Conclusion: fMR1 adds valuable information in the pre-surgical investigation for patients with a complex language lateralisation.

  • Betalningsviljan för renare havsvatten runt Åland
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Ekonomiska samfundets tidskrift. - 0013-3183 .- 2323-1378. ; 57:3, s. 109-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
