  • Metaethical Contextualism Defended
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Ethics. - : University of Chicago Press. - 0014-1704 .- 1539-297X. ; 121:1, s. 7-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We defend a contextualist account of normative judgments as relativized both to (i) information and to (ii) standards or ends against recent objections that turn on practices of normative disagreement. Niko Kolodny and John MacFarlane argue that information-relative contextualism cannot accommodate the connection between deliberation and advice. In response, we suggest that they misidentify the basic concerns of deliberating agents, which are not to settle the truth of particular propositions but to promote certain values. For pragmatic reasons, semantic assessments of normative claims sometimes are evaluations of propositions other than those asserted. Other writers have raised parallel objections to standard-relative contextualism, particularly about moral claims; we argue for a parallel solution

  • Cooperative activity, shared intention, and exploitation
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Ethics. - 0014-1704 .- 1539-297X. ; 134:3, s. 387-401
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Jules Salomone-Sehr argues that an activity is cooperative if and only if, roughly, it consists of several participants’ actions that are (i) coordinated for a common purpose (ii) in ways that do not undermine any participant’s agency. He argues that guidance by shared intention is neither necessary nor sufficient for cooperation. Thereby, he claims to “topple an orthodoxy of shared agency theory." In response, we argue that Salomone-Sehr’s account captures another notion of cooperation than the sociopsychological notion shared agency theory has focused on. Furthermore, we argue that Salomone-Sehr’s interpretation of (ii) is too demanding; it implausibly makes cooperation incompatible with exploitation.

  • Civilian Liability
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ethics. - : University of Chicago Press. - 0014-1704 .- 1539-297X. ; 129:4, s. 625-650
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adil Ahmad Haque argues that civilians who contribute to unjust lethal threats in war, but who do not directly participate in the war, are not liable to defensive killing. His argument rests on two central claims: first, that the extent of a person's liability to defensive harm in virtue of contributing to an unjust threat is limited to the cost that she is initially required to bear in order to avoid contributing, and second, that civilians need not bear lethal costs in order to avoid indirectly contributing to unjust lethal threats. I argue that Haque's defense of each claim fails.

  • If You'll Be My Bodyguard : Agreements to Save and the Duty to Minimize Harm
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ethics. - : University of Chicago Press. - 0014-1704 .- 1539-297X. ; 129:2, s. 204-229
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores how agreements to preferentially save can ground an exception to the duty to minimize harm when saving. A rescuer preferentially saves if she knowingly fails to minimize harm among prospective victims, even though minimizing harm would not have imposed greater costs on the rescuer herself. Allowing rescuers to act on agreements to preferentially save is justified by the reasons we have to respect the agreements that agents form as a means of pursuing their own ends.
