  • Shockwaves : The Interrupted Sea-Journeys of Rudyard Kipling and Morgan Robertson
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Forum for modern language studies. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0015-8518 .- 1471-6860. ; 49:4, s. 393-405
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This essay takes Nikola Teslas proposal to weaponize the sea itself as the starting-point for an examination of changing perceptions of the ocean wave at the turn of the twentieth century. Focusing on a trio of maritime tales by Rudyard Kipling and Morgan Robertson, it argues that the routinization of sea travel, coupled with historic developments in communications and technology, prompted these writers to explore the multiple significances of sea-journeys interrupted by monstrous waves.

  • ‘Community is the one true capital’ : Ideologies of urban self-build groups in Anke Stelling’s Berlin novels
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Forum for modern language studies. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0015-8518 .- 1471-6860. ; 59:1, s. 39-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Privately organized collective housing is currently included in agendas for sustainable urban development in a range of European cities as a resource-efficient form of housing that prevents isolation and contributes to social cohesion within urban communities. However, research has shown that the recent surge of different forms of private-collective housing in Berlin could be a driver of gentrification and segregation. This article aims to uncover potential causes of the discrepancies between the ideological, and at times utopian, motivations underpinning self-build housing projects in the former East Berlin district Prenzlauer Berg, and their actual outcomes. I do so by analysing the literary (counter) discourse on self-build groups developed in Anke Stelling’s novels Bodentiefe Fenster [Floor-Length Windows] (2015) and Schäfchen im Trockenen (2018, published in English translation as Higher Ground in 2021). I show that the realization of socially progressive, or even utopian, plans for urban private-collective housing prove difficult, and sometimes impossible, for the characters in the novels, due to the influence of other societal structures such as gender and class inequalities, urban segregation and gentrification, discrimination and the neoliberal logic of individual competition and consumption.

  • Novel, Film, and the Art of Translational Storytelling : Dai Sijie's Balzac et la petite tailleuse chinoise
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Forum for Modern Language Studies. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0015-8518 .- 1471-6860. ; 55:4, s. 359-379
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the novel and film, Balzac et la petite tailleuse chinoise, by the Franco-Chinese writer and filmmaker Dai Sijie, the story of which takes place against the background of the Cultural Revolution. The first part of my analysis will make clear how the film illuminates and dramatizes the special texture, aesthetic, and structure of the novel. I then move on to investigate the linguistic aspects of the various translations between the novel and the film among French, Mandarin Chinese, and Sichuanese. The aesthetic effects of dubbing, in particular, will allow me to investigate new possibilities of reading exophone literature. Finally, this paper will highlight the centripetal role of oral storytelling in the Chinese tradition in/through various forms of translation, interlingual as well as intermedial. In so doing, the paper will further nuance and enrich current debates on issues such as intercultural misreading and exoticism in Dai's works.

  • Transcultural novels and translating cultures : François Cheng's Le Dit de Tianyi and L'éternité n'est pas de trop
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Forum for Modern Language Studies. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0015-8518 .- 1471-6860. ; 53:2, s. 179-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the two French-language novels by the Franco-Chinese migrant writer François Cheng, Le Dit de Tianyi (1998) and L'éternité n'est pas de trop (2002), and proposes to conceptualize them as two novelistic models of cultural translation. Cheng's engagement with, and departure from, canonical Western novelistic models such as Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu in Le Dit reveals his 'comparatist' ambition to reorient Western cultural heritage by putting it into dialogue with that of the East. L'éternité, on the other hand, is primarily concerned with a translingual rewriting of Chinese literary traditions such as that of classical romance. While the first model applies principles of analogy, the second reflects a more traditional conception of translation that emphasizes faithfulness and authenticity. The two models are mutually complementary rather than exclusive. The study pays special attention to Cheng's 'Chinese-inked' French language and style, highlighting the aesthetic innovations and challenges in Cheng's transcultural writings.

  • 'This Is The Hell That I Have Heard Of' : Some Dialectical Images in Fossil Fuel Fiction
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Forum for Modern Language Studies. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0015-8518 .- 1471-6860. ; 53:2, s. 121-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How can the realities of global warming be made visible in literary texts? After the rise of 'cli-fi', it might be time to return to a trove of literature written long before the discoveries of climate science: fiction about fossil fuels. It is filled with premonitions of disasters, such as extreme heat and terrible storms. Focusing on two texts - Ghassan Kanafani's Men in the Sun and Joseph Conrad's Typhoon - this essay makes a case for developing 'dialectical images', in Walter Benjamin's sense of the term, from fossil fuel fiction. Such images might contribute to a critical understanding of our current epoch, fracturing the narrative of the human species as a united entity ascending to biospheric dominance in the Anthropocene. The miseries of global warming have been in preparation for a long time. Some have felt the heat from the start.

  • Agreement of left ventricular mass in steady state free precession and delayed enhancement MR images : Implications for quantification of fibrosis in congenital and ischemic heart disease
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: BMC Medical Imaging. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2342. ; 10:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Left ventricular mass (LVM) is used when expressing infarct or fibrosis as a percentage of the left ventricle (LV). Quantification of LVM is interchangeably carried out in cine steady state free precession (SSFP) and delayed enhancement (DE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, these techniques may yield different LVM. Therefore, the aim of the study was to compare LVM determined by SSFP and DE MRI in patients and determine the agreement with these sequences with ex vivo data in an experimental animal model. Methods: Ethics committees approved human and animal studies. Informed written consent was obtained from all patients. SSFP and DE images were acquired in 60 patients (20 with infarction, 20 without infarction and 20 pediatric patients). Ex vivo MRI was used as reference method for LVM in 19 pigs and compared to in vivo SSFP and DE.Results: LVM was greater in SSFP than in DE (p < 0.001) with a bias of 5.0 ± 6.7% in humans (r2 = 0.98), and a bias of 7.3 ± 6.7% (p < 0.001) in pigs (r2 = 0.83). Bias for SSFP and DE images compared to ex vivo LVM was -0.2 ± 9.0% and -7.7 ± 8.5% respectively. Conclusions: LVM was higher when measured with SSFP compared to DE. Thus, the percentage infarction of the LV will differ if SSFP or DE is used to determine LVM. There was no significant difference between SSFP and ex vivo LVM suggesting that SSFP is more accurate for LVM quantification. To avoid intrinsic error due to the differences between the sequences, we suggest using DE when expressing infarct as a percentage of LVM.

  • A life enriching togetherness : meanings of informal support when being a parent of a child with disability
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd.. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 21:2, s. 238-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The majority of children affected by disability are cared for at home by their parents. It is well documented in research literature that the parents are in need of professional support. In the striving to improve the professional caring, it is also important to deepen our understanding about the meaning of informal support from the perspective of parents' life world. The aim of this study was to illuminate the meanings of lived experience of informal support, when being a parent of a child affected by disability. Thirteen parents, eight mothers and five fathers within eight families, participated in narrative interviews, which were analysed by using a phenomenological-hermeneutic method. The meanings resulted in three themes: 'being gratified by experiences of the child as having a natural place in relation with others', 'being provided a room for sorrow and joy' and 'being enabled to live an eased and spontaneous daily life'. These themes emanated from the experiences of other persons' being and doing in relation to the parents, the child affected by disability and the siblings. According to our interpretation, informal support means a life enriching togetherness, the core of which is natural human caring. The findings also showed that parents highly valued professional support concerning informal supporters
