  • The Language of Graphic Advertising in the UK : Cultural Considerations
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: ITL. Institut voor toegepaste linguistik. - : Peeters Publishers. - 0019-0829. ; :162, s. 36-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to explore the influence of cultural values on the design and commu-nicative style of British graphic advertisements for food and beverages, particularly in relationto Hall’s context dependence and Hofstede’s individualism index. The motivation for this studycomes from the increasing importance of international trade and cross-cultural and interculturalcommunication strategies. Additionally, previous research projects (ELISE, ELUCIDATE, ELAN)have emphasized the dramatic effect the lack of these skills has on business effectiveness. Therefore, Guillén-Nieto’s correlations model between culture-specific and language-specificbehaviour (2009) was adopted, and 100 British advertisements were collected and analyzed.First, a qualitative examination of the sample using ATLAS.ti and SPSS software tried to iden-tify any patterns present in the sample. Second, the realization of the aforementioned patternswas considered. The results of these analyses highlight the fact that the language-specificbehaviour associated with context dependence is clearly visible in the sample, whereas theindividualism index does not seem to be as influential in the design of press advertisements forfood in the UK. Finally, some guidelines are provided in order to aid international companies inadvertising their products more effectively in the UK.

  • Assessing vocabulary size through multiple-choice formats : Issues with guessing and sampling rates
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: ITL: Institut Voor Toegepaste Linguistik. - : John Benjamins Publishing Company. - 0019-0829. ; 166:2, s. 278-306
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In most tests of vocabulary size, knowledge is assessed through multiple-choice formats. Despite advantages such as ease of scoring, multiple-choice tests (MCT) are accompanied with problems. One of the more central issues has to do with guessing and the presence of other construct-irrelevant strategies that can lead to overestimation of scores. A further challenge when designing vocabulary size tests is that of sampling rate. How many words constitute a representative sample of the underlying population of words that the test is intended to measure? This paper addresses these two issues through a case study based on data from a recent and increasingly used MCT of vocabulary size: the Vocabulary Size Test. Using a criterion-related validity approach, our results show that for multiple-choice items sampled from this test, there is a discrepancy between the test scores and the scores obtained from the criterion measure, and that a higher sampling rate would be needed in order to better represent knowledge of the underlying population of words. We offer two main interpretations of these results, and discuss their implications for the construction and use of vocabulary size tests.

  • Vocabulary acquisition and the textbook : What opportunities are there for young learners?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: ITL. Institut voor toegepaste linguistik. - : John Benjamins Publishing Company. - 0019-0829. ; 166:2, s. 199-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recycling words, that is, using and/or encountering words many times in different contexts, is important for vocabulary acquisition and long-term retention to be successful. In the language classroom, the textbook plays an important role, but despite that, surprisingly few studies have investigated the vocabulary component of textbooks. This is particularly the case for textbooks for young learners. To somewhat remedy this scarcity, this case study reports the analysis of vocabulary in teaching materials aimed at students aged 10–12 years in Sweden. A corpus of all texts in three textbooks was compiled to facilitate analysis and comparison as regards what words can be found in the texts, their frequency and to what extent and how they are recycled. The results suggest that more conscious attention is needed to what words are included in textbooks and to how often they are recycled.

  • Morphological variability in L2 Italian : The imperative deafult hypothesis
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Applied Linguistics. - : John Benjamins Publishing Company. - 0802-6106 .- 1473-4192 .- 0019-0829 .- 1783-1490. ; 168:2, s. 203-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Key accounts of morphological variability in L2 acquisition posit either deficits in the representation of abstract morphosyntactic features or the mapping between morpho-phonological forms and syntactic features due to computational limitations. This study extends previous research to L2 Italian, a richly inflected language. The production and grammatical intuitions of suppletive and affixal verb inflection were elicited from a cross-section of instructed adult L2 learners with L1 Spanish and L1 English. Although a clear production-intuition gap was found, supporting computational views, a strong regularity in the degree of variability across test conditions, L1s, and proficiency levels was also attested, supporting representational accounts. The findings suggest morphological development in L2 Italian is consistent with structure-building models that assume no L1 transfer of functional features. Imperative verb forms in L2 Italian are proposed as defaults equivalent to the bare verb forms of L2 English and non-finite defaults of L2 French and German.

  • Receptive academic vocabulary knowledge and extramural English involvement – is there a correlation?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ITL. Institut voor toegepaste linguistik. - : John Benjamins Publishing Company. - 0019-0829. ; 73:1, s. 120-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extramural English (EE) exposure has been shown to correlate with general vocabulary knowledge. It remains uncertain, however, how academic vocabulary knowledge correlates with EE and can be explained by EE factors and demographic factors. Therefore, an academic vocabulary test, a background questionnaire, and a survey on current EE involvement were administered to 817 Swedish upper-secondary students in university-preparatory study programmes. A linear model revealed little explanation from demographic factors (age, gender, number of first languages, length of English instruction, and parental educational level) whereas EE factors (reading, listening & viewing without textual support, viewing with Swedish subtitles) accounted for 26% of the variation. Since extensive EE involvement may support the incidental learning of academic lexis, the paper suggests pre-tertiary instructional principles being guided by extramural as well as intramural incidental learning opportunities.
