  • A Buddhist contribution to the psychoanalytic psychology of self
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Psychoanalysis. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0020-7578 .- 1745-8315. ; 84:6, s. 1551-1568
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The author attempts to integrate the concepts of self used in psychoanalytic theory with the understanding of the nature of self as explained within the Buddhist meditative tradition. He divides different concepts of self in psychoanalytic theory into three major levels of consciousness and abstraction: self as experience, representational self and self as system. The representational level is defined as consisting of unconscious organizing structures of interaction: the system level is a hierarchically higher organization of representations, while the experiential level consists of the moment-to-moment flow of consciousness. He argues that for the sake of theoretical clarity these levels should be differentiated in discussions of self. He then describes the Buddhist psychology of self and tries to show how this perspective can enrich psychoanalytic understanding of the experiential self and of narcissism, which in Buddhist language would be described as clinging to (seeking or avoiding) images of self that arise in the mind. Last, he describes a model of therapeutic development using different levels of self and the interrelationship between them, showing how psychoanalytic psychotherapy and Buddhist insight meditation emphasize different levels of self using complementary rather than mutually exclusive methods.

  • On the subject of homosexuality : What Freud said
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Psychoanalysis. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0020-7578 .- 1745-8315. ; 97:3, s. 933-950
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article explores Freud’s writing on homosexuality, from his early hypotheses, expressed in his letters to Fleiss to his last observations in The Outline of Psychoanalysis, published in 1940 after his death. We trace the continuities as well as changes in his thinking, and have organized the paper conceptually, under the headings: 1) Bisexuality 2) Narcissism and Object choice, 3) On Normality and Pathology, and 4) The Quantitative factor and Aggression. We show that Freud was the first to confirm the existence of homosexualities, that he offers no black and white solution to the question of normality and pathology, although he contributes to the understanding of the vehemence that surrounds the subject, and that, in the considerable body of work, he has offered a rich and varied foundation for further thinking on the subject.

  • Children in genocide : Extreme traumatization and the affect propeller
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Psychoanalysis. - International Psychoanalytical Association : International Psychoanalysis Library. - 0020-7578 .- 1745-8315. ; 87, s. 725-746
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The author bases this paper on extensive research concerning children in genocide with a starting point in the Holocaust and in the genocide in Rwanda 1994. She demonstrates indicators for psychological phenomena concerning the child survivors’ affect regulating that appeared in life histories presented in videotaped in-depth interviews. The psychological phenomena concern experiences of persecution and ways of coming to terms with recurring memory images and affects. The interviews that have been analysed in detail form a basis for an emerging conceptual model about trauma- and generational-linking processes within each individual—the ‘affect propeller’. An overall conclusion from this study is that past traumatic experiences are recovered not as memories in the usual sense of the word, but as affects invading the present. Accordingly, affects seem to tell the story of the past traumatic experiences.
