  • Religiosity and Swedish Opinion on the European Union
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. - Hoboken, NJ, USA : Blackwell Publishing. - 0021-8294 .- 1468-5906. ; 41:4, s. 759-769
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •   This article examines whether religiosity affects Swedish opinion on the European Union (EU) using sur-vey data from 1998 conducted by the SOM Institute, Goteborg University. The findings support the notion that religiosity affects Swedish EU opinion. Members of the free churches (nonconformist Protestants) tend to oppose Swedish EU membership, whereas no such tendency is visible among active members of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Sweden (the traditional state church). Members of immigrant churches and adherents to non-Christian religions tend to support Swedish EU membership. The difference between the Church of Sweden and the free churches is explained by the uneven distribution of evangelical values. Supportfor Swedish EU membership is on the same low level among evangelicals and equally high among mainline Protestants in both religious orientations. Controlling for demographic factors does not change the conclusions.

  • Are religious people more prosocial? : A quasi-experimental study with madrasah pupils in a rural community in India
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. - : Wiley. - 0021-8294 .- 1468-5906. ; 48:2, s. 368-374
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using quasi-experimental data, this article examines the relationship between religiosity and prosocial behavior. In contrast to previous studies that identify religious people by how often they attend religious services or by their self-reported religiosity, this study compares the behavior of highly devout students who are preparing to enter the clergy to the behavior of other students in a public goods game and in the dictator game. The results show that religious students were significantly more cooperative in the public goods game and significantly more generous in the dictator game than other students.

  • Religious Context and Prosociality: An Experimental Study from Valparaiso, Chile
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. - : Wiley. - 0021-8294 .- 1468-5906. ; 52:3, s. 627-637
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Are people more prosocial in a religious context? We addressed this question through an experiment. We randomly placed participants in the control group in a neutral location (a lecture hall), and we placed participants in the experimental group in a religious location (a chapel). The participants then took part in a one-shot three-person public goods game, which measured participants' degree of cooperativeness. The results showed that participants in the experimental group cooperated significantly more than did participants in the control group. Furthermore, participants' beliefs about other participants' cooperativeness were more positive in the experimental group than they were in the control group. Improved expectations of others partially explained the enhanced cooperation in the religious context. We found no main or interaction effect of self-reported religiosity in the experiment.

  • Your Own Personal Jesus? Doctrinal Beliefs versus Personal Spirituality Among Inmates Involved in the Monastery Route in Swedish Prisons
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. - : Wiley. - 0021-8294 .- 1468-5906. ; 58:1, s. 192-209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous studies, mainly from the United States, have indicated that religious beliefs can help inmates to cope with imprisonment and to build hopes for the future. The purpose of this study was to examine if this is the case also in Sweden, which is usually considered to be one of the most secular countries in the world. The data consist of semistructured interviews with 14 prisoners participating in the so‐called Monastery Route activities within Swedish prisons. Although the activities are based on Christianity, the explicit aim is to invite individuals from all religions, as well as those with an open attitude toward spirituality. How do the inmates formulate their beliefs (if any) along the lines of doctrinal religiousness and personal spirituality, respectively? And, how does this orientation affect the ability to cope with imprisonment, as well as the views of the future? The results show that a small number of the participants defined themselves as Christian, but that the majority had instead developed a more personal form of spirituality. This provided them with a means of working with themselves and gave them a sense of inner calm. The study's findings are contrasted against conflicting results from the United States.

  • Are Religions for Sale? : Evidence from the Swedish Church Revolt Over Same-Sex Marriage
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. - : WILEY. - 0021-8294 .- 1468-5906. ; 58:2, s. 336-359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Religious leaders sometimes condemn progressive social norms. This article revisits David Hume's hypothesis that secular states can "bribe" churches into adopting less strict religious doctrines. The hypothesis is difficult to test due to reverse causality: more liberal theologies may attract more political support in the first place. The empirical strategy used to circumvent this problem focuses on a theological conflict over same-sex marriage within the Church of Sweden and takes advantage of political regulations that effectively make some parishes shareholders of the church's state-protected property. The shares used for statistical identification are tied to property rights assigned more than 300 years ago, and they cannot be sold, traded, or amended by the individual parishes. The results show that priests in shareholding parishes are less likely to publicly oppose same-sex marriage. The impact of political protection is stronger in parishes with more conservative members. The results are consistent with a model of clerical opportunism, in which income protection makes priests less likely to pander to the stricter followers.

  • Which Societies Provide a Strong Religious Socialization Context? Explanations Beyond the Effects of National Religiosity
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. - : Wiley. - 0021-8294 .- 1468-5906. ; 53:4, s. 739-759
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Religious socialization occurs within the immediate family as well as in the broader social context. Previous research has shown that parents religiosity matters less for the transmission of religious beliefs in devout than in secular nations, implying smaller costs of religious socialization. In this article we test which other societal factors affect the transmission of religious beliefs: anti-religious policies in formerly socialist countries, economic development, and income inequality. Our results indicate that societies with high levels of income inequality seem to provide the most favorable context for religious socialization. Individuals develop strong religious beliefs even if they only received little religious socialization within the family. Formerly socialist nations increased socialization costs through the overall suppression of religious practice. Economic development has no impact on socialization effects, suggesting that inequality is a more important driver of religious change than previously thought.

  • Conceptualizing the Religious Dimensions of Armed Conflicts : A Response to "Shrouded: Islam, War, and Holy War in Southeast Asia"
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. - : Wiley. - 0021-8294 .- 1468-5906. ; 55:1, s. 185-189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here I react to an article published in Volume 53 of the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion by Ian Barter and Zatkin-Osburn. My principal disagreement with Barter and Zatkin-Osburn concerns their operational and methodological critiques of my work. However, the exchange also speaks to larger questions of how to conceptualize and measure religious dimensions of armed conflicts. It also highlights the importance of methodological pluralism in the study of religion and conflict.

  • Socioeconomic Advantage or Community Attachment? A Register‐Based Study on the Difference in National Lutheran Church Affiliation Between Finnish and Swedish Speakers in Finland
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. - 0021-8294 .- 1468-5906.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Secularization theory has been challenged by research showing religious persistence and upswing in contexts across the world. In Europe, particularly in highly secular and historically religiously homogeneous Nordic settings, there has been little research, and representative data for minority groups are rare. We offer a pioneering study using national register data to study religious changes over the past five decades in Finland, where the two native ethnolinguistic groups—Finnish and Swedish speakers—offer a unique study context. We use register data with yearly information on every individual's religious affiliation to compare the two groups, exploring the mechanisms behind any differentials. Swedish speakers are found to be consistently more affiliated with the National Lutheran Church than Finnish speakers. This finding contradicts the expectation of modernization theory because the Swedish-speaking population is, in some aspects, socioeconomically advantaged in Finnish society. The higher affiliation level of Swedish speakers can be partly explained by lower levels of internal migration, which is possibly driven by stronger community attachment. Our results suggest that community cohesion may help preserve the religious tradition of a minority group, even in the absence of socioeconomic disadvantages or threats from the majority.
