  • Evaluation of interfacial shear strength by tensile tests of impregnated flax fiber yarns
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of composite materials. - : SAGE Publications. - 0021-9983 .- 1530-793X. ; 46:3, s. 351-357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adhesion of flax fibers and polymer matrix as well as mutual bonding of elementary fibers in a technical fiber are among the principal factors governing the mechanical response of flax fiber reinforced polymer-matrix composites. A method for evaluation of adhesion is proposed based on tension tests of impregnated fiber yarns, with subsequent characterization by optical microscopy of length distribution of fibers pulled out of the yarn fracture surfaces. An elementary probabilistic model is derived relating aspect ratio distribution of the pulled out fibers to the fiber tensile strength distribution and the effective interfacial shear strength. The method was applied to flax fiber/vinylester resin yarns and an estimate of interfacial shear strength at 17 MPa was obtained.

  • Development of a test method for evaluating the crushing behaviour of unidirectional laminates
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of composite materials. - : SAGE Publications Ltd. - 0021-9983 .- 1530-793X. ; 51:29, s. 4041-4051
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • More fundamental test methods are needed to assist the development of physically based and truly predictive simulation tools for composite materials under crash conditions. In this paper, a unidirectional flat specimen that can be used to validate the predicted behaviour from a simulation to the physical behaviour in the experiment is developed. A systematic experimental investigation is conducted to evaluate the influence of the trigger geometry on the crushing response by selecting two trigger types and different trigger angles. For longitudinal crushing, the traditional bevel trigger leads to out-of-plane failure by splaying with a limited amount of in-plane fracture, while the proposed trigger achieves a high amount of compressive fragmentation failure. For transverse crushing, the symmetry of the proposed new trigger improves the specimen stability during the crushing process. It is also observed that the weft threads of the unidirectional fabric reinforcement used for the tests have a strong influence on the longitudinal crushing response. The boundary conditions of the test and the information on the specimen failure gleaned from video recordings and microscopic inspections are discussed in order to facilitate a future correlation with modelling results.

  • A rapid method for simulating residual stress to enable optimization against cure induced distortion
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of composite materials. - : SAGE Publications Ltd. - 0021-9983 .- 1530-793X. ; 55:26, s. 3799-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper a rapid method for residual cure stress analysis from composite manufacturing is presented. The method uses a high-fidelity path-dependent cure kinetics subroutine implemented in ABAQUS to calibrate a linear elastic model. The path-dependent model accounts for the tool-part interaction, forming pressure, and the changing composite modulus during the rubbery phase of matrix curing. Results are used to calculate equivalent lamina-wise coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) in 3 directions for a linear temperature analysis. The goal is to accurately predict distortions for large complex geometries as rapidly as possible for use in an optimization framework. A carbon-epoxy system is studied. Simple coupons and complex parts are manufactured and measured with a 3 D scanner to compare the manufactured and simulated distortion. Results are presented and the accuracy and limitations of the rapid simulation method are discussed with particular focus on implementation in a numerical optimization framework. © The Author(s) 2021.

  • Improvement and validation of a physically based model for the shear and transverse crushing of orthotropic composites
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Composite Materials. - : SAGE Publications. - 1530-793X .- 0021-9983. ; 53:12, s. 1681-1696
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper details a complete crush model for composite materials with focus on shear dominated crushing under a three-dimensional stress state. The damage evolution laws and final failure strain conditions are based on data extracted from shear experiments. The main advantages of the current model include the following: no need to measure the fracture toughness in shear and transverse compression, mesh objectivity without the need for a regular mesh and finite element characteristic length, a pressure dependency of the nonlinear shear response, accounting for load reversal and some orthotropic effects (making the model suitable for noncrimp fabric composites). The model is validated against a range of relevant experiments, namely a through-the-thickness compression specimen and a flat crush coupon with the fibres oriented at 45° and 90° to the load. Damage growth mechanisms, orientation of the fracture plane, nonlinear evolution of Poisson's ratio and energy absorption are accurately predicted.

  • Effect of the proximity to the 0°/90° interface on Energy Release Rate of fiber/matrix interface crack growth in the 90°-ply of a cross-ply laminate under tensile loading
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of composite materials. - : Sage Publications. - 0021-9983 .- 1530-793X. ; 54:21, s. 3021-3034
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Models of Representative Volume Elements (RVEs) of cross-ply laminates with different geometric configurations and damage states are studied. Debond growth is characterized by the estimation of the Mode I and Mode II Energy Release Rate (ERR) using the Virtual Crack Closure Technique (VCCT). It is found that the presence of the 0°/90° interface and the thickness of the 0° layer have no effect, apart from laminates with ultra-thin 90° plies where it is however modest. The present analysis support the claim that debond growth is not affected by the plythickness effect.

  • Bulk composites from microfibrillated cellulose-reinforced thermoset starch made from enzymatically degraded allyl glycidyl ether-modified starch
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of composite materials. - : SAGE Publications. - 0021-9983 .- 1530-793X. ; 46:25, s. 3201-3209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microfibrillated cellulose consists of nanoscale bundles of elementary microfibrils prepared, e.g. by the defibrillation of delignified wood pulp fibres in high-pressure homogenizers. In this study, microfibrillated cellulose was used to reinforce a thermoset starch plastic. The starch was modified with allyl glycidyl ether with a degree of substitution of 1.3, which was further hydrolyzed with alpha-amylase for 18 h yielding significantly improved processing properties. Dry premixes of all constituents were prepared by a stepwise drying process before sample manufacturing. The composite was cured by ethylene glycol dimethacrylate initiated with benzoyl peroxide during compression moulding at 150 degrees C. Scanning electron microscopy revealed some degree of porosity in the samples, where the dispersed microfibrillated cellulose network was detectable. Microfibrillated cellulose, even in relatively small additions (2 wt%, 5 wt% and 10 wt%), resulted in composites with rather good hygromechanical properties. The ultimate strength increased with microfibrillated cellulose content and reached values of comparable composites with 40 wt% softwood fibre. Importantly, the dimensional stability in water was much improved compared to similar composites reinforced with substantially larger weight fractions of softwood fibres.

  • Compressive failure of impacted NCF composite sandwich panels - Characterisation of the failure process
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of composite materials. - : SAGE Publications. - 0021-9983 .- 1530-793X. ; 38:6, s. 495-514
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, non-crimp fabric (NCF) composite face sheet sandwich panels have been tested in compression after impact (CAI). Damage in the face sheets was characterised by fractography. Compression after impact loaded panels were found to fail by plastic fibre microbuckling (kinking) in the damaged face sheet. Studies of panels for which loading was interrupted prior to failure revealed extensive stable kink band formation at several positions and in numerous plies. Kink bands initiated and propagated within a wide region close to the point of impact. In addition, kink bands initiated in zones with high shear stresses, away from the impact centre line. Consequently, the fractographic results from this investigation do not support the assumption of modelling the impact damage as an equivalent hole. To achieve accurate predictions of kink band initiation, the stress field must be known. The results from this study imply that bending effects caused by remaining dent or material eccentricities in the damaged region must be considered.

  • Improving tensile strength and moisture barrier properties of gelatin using microfibrillated cellulose
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of composite materials. - : SAGE Publications. - 0021-9983 .- 1530-793X. ; 47:16, s. 1977-1985
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microfibrillated cellulose isolated from bagasse was used to prepare novel nanocomposites using cross-linked gelatin as a biodegradable polymer matrix. Microfibrillated cellulose loadings up to 25% (weight percent) were used. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized regarding their wet and dry tensile strength, water sorption, and water vapor permeability. Nanocomposites’ surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy; the scanning electron microscopy images indicated homogeneous distribution of microfibrillated cellulose in the gelatin matrix. Microfibrillated cellulose improved wet and dry maximum tensile stress and modulus of cross-linked gelatin but resulted in a decrease of its strain at break. Microfibrillated cellulose did not affect the water absorption of cross-linked gelatin but significantly improved its moisture barrier property.

  • Use of full-field measurements to evaluate analytical models for laminates with intralaminar cracks
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of composite materials. - : SAGE Publications. - 0021-9983 .- 1530-793X. ; 46:21, s. 2739-2752
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Full-field displacement measurements between intralaminar cracks in cross-ply laminates were performed to evaluate the accuracy of shear lag models and Hashin’s model. The dependence of the average crack opening displacement on the crack density was measured and compared with model predictions. It was found that Hashin’s model overestimates the average COD by at least 25%. The value of the shear lag parameter was back-calculated by fitting. With the same goal the strain in the middle between two cracks was measured rendering shear lag parameter which was only 1% different. The found value does not agree with any of the used shear lag models. Measurement shows nonzero intralaminar shear zones in both layers covering a part of the ply thickness.

  • Development of novel high Tg polyimide-based composites. Part I : RTM processing properties
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of composite materials. - : SAGE Publications. - 0021-9983 .- 1530-793X. ; 52:2, s. 253-260
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, an assessment of the composite processing-related properties of a newly developed 6-FDA-based phenylethynyl-terminated polyimide (available under the tradename NEXIMID®MHT-R) is presented. Processing schemes, used for preparing high quality carbon fibre-reinforced composites by the use of conventional resin transfer moulding are developed and presented. The influences of manufacturing parameters on glass transition temperature of the composites are presented. The results confirm that composites with exceptionally high Tg, in the range between 350 and 460℃ can be achieved. A manufacturing scheme that yields in composites with Tg of 370℃ is presented and proposed as a good candidate to serve as baseline for further studies.
