  • Competing models of organizational form : Risk management strategies and underwriting profitability in the Swedish fire insurance market between 1903 and 1939
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Economic History. - 0022-0507 .- 1471-6372. ; 72:4, s. 990-1014
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mutual and stock insurers have coexisted and competed against each other in insurance markets for centuries. In this article, we examine the risk management strategies and underwriting profitability of the different organizational forms in Sweden's property fire insurance market between 1903 and 1939. We demonstrate that stock insurers acted as intermediaries between policyholders and reinsurers to operate effectively in the potentially high-risk segments of the fire insurance market. In contrast, nationwide mutual insurers kept larger reserves to balance fluctuations in claims experiences, while local insurance pools relied on social obligation and trust to mobilize capital after adverse fire events.

  • Mass Migration, Cheap Labor, and Innovation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Economic History. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0022-0507 .- 1471-6372. ; 78:2, s. 623-623
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Migration is often depicted as a major problem for struggling developing countries,as they may lose valuable workers and human capital. Yet, its effects on sendingregions are ambiguous and depend crucially on local market responses and migrantselection. This paper studies the effects of migration on technological innovation insending communities during one of the largest migration episodes in human history:the Age of Mass Migration (1850–1913). Using novel historical data on Sweden, whereabout a quarter of its population migrated, we find that migration caused an increasein technological patents in sending municipalities. To establish causality, we use aninstrumental variable design that exploits severe local growing season frost shocks to-gether with within-country travel costs to reach an emigration port. Exploring possiblemechanisms, we suggest that increased labor costs, due to low-skilled emigration, in-duced technological innovation.

  • Social Mobility in Sweden before the Welfare State
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Economic History. - : Cambridges Institutes Press. - 0022-0507 .- 1471-6372. ; 83:2, s. 431-463
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use historical census data to show that Sweden exhibited high levels of intergenerational occupational mobility several decades before the rise of the welfare state. Mobility rates were higher than in other nineteenth- and twentieth-century European countries, closer to those observed in the highly mobile nineteenth-century United States. We leverage mobility variation across Swedish municipalities to shed light on potential determinants: economic growth and migration are positively correlated with mobility, consistent with the patterns observed across countries.

  • Economic Growth and the Development of Real Wages : Swedish Construction Workers' Wages in Comparative Perspective, 1831–1900
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Economic History. - 0022-0507 .- 1471-6372. ; 80:3, s. 813-852
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using new and uniquely detailed data, we examine how construction workers’ wages in Sweden developed between 1831 and 1900. Wages grew rapidly from the 1850s, and comparisons with Northwestern Europe show that Swedish workers benefited more from growth than workers elsewhere. Globalization forces, most notably overseas migration, in combination with flexible and well-integrated labor markets—signified by strong regional convergence, falling skill differentials, and small urban-rural wage gaps—pushed up wages in Sweden.

  • The modernization of Swedish credit markets, 1840-1905 : Evidence from probate records
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Economic History. - New York, USA : Cambridge University Press. - 1471-6372 .- 0022-0507. ; 62:3, s. 810-832
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study estimates the size of the so-called “informal,” or unintermediated, credit market in one Swedish city through a period of economic transformation. In the early 1840s promissory notes accounted for more than half of the total credit market, and almost four times the value of credit channeled through the banking system. Even in the 1870s, the promissory-note market was twice the size of the loan volume of the banking system. By 1905 bank-based credit had finally surpassed the informal variety; but even then, outstanding promissory notes were almost three-fifths as great as total bank credits to noncorporate borrowers.

  • More Power to the People : Electricity Adoption, Technological Change, and Labor Conflict
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Economic History. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0022-0507 .- 1471-6372. ; 81:2, s. 481-512
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Will technical change spur conflicts in the labor market? In this study, we examine electricity adoption in Sweden during the first decades of the twentieth century. Exploiting that proximity to hydropowered plants shaped the electricity network independently of previous local conditions, we estimate the impact of electricity on labor strikes. Our results indicate that electricity adoption preceded an increase in conflicts, but strikes were of an offensive nature and most common in sectors with increasing labor demand. This suggests that electrification provided workers with a stronger bargaining position from which they could voice their claims.

  • A Western Reversal Since the Neolithic? The Long-Run Impact of Early Agriculture
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Economic History. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 0022-0507 .- 1471-6372. ; 80:1, s. 100-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we document a reversal of fortune within the Western agricultural core, showing that regions which made early transition to Neolithic agriculture are now poorer than regions that made the transition later. The finding contrasts recent influential works emphasizing the beneficial role of early transition. Using data from a large number of carbon-dated Neolithic sites throughout the Western agricultural area, we determine approximate transition dates for about 60 countries, 280 medium-sized regions, and 1,400 small regions. Our empirical analysis shows that there is a robust negative, reduced-form relationship between years since transition to agriculture and contemporary levels of income both across and within countries. Our results further indicate that the reversal had started to emerge already before the era of European colonization.
