  • Evaluating the phenomenological approach to empathy training
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of humanistic psychology. - : Sage Publications. - 0022-1678 .- 1552-650X. ; 54:3, s. 294-313
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to report on a study that attempted to qualitatively evaluate the phenomenological approach to empathy training. A descriptive phenomenological psychological method was used to explicate the lived applied meaning of the training. The result disclosed a general structure of the phenomenon, composed of the following five constituents: (a) a serious context in which one is encountering the other who is emotionally distressed about something, (b) directing one’s lived presence to the other’s meaning-expression, (c) a shift in emotional context, (d) novelty of approach toward interpersonal understanding, and (e) disclosing an interpersonal relatedness. The results were briefly discussed in relation to the content and the procedures of the training.

  • Implications of Debunking the "Critical Positivity Ratio" for Humanistic Psychology : Introduction to Special Issue
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of humanistic psychology. - : Sage Publications. - 0022-1678 .- 1552-650X. ; 58:3, s. 239-261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An extraordinary claim was made by one of the leading researchers within positive psychology, namely, there is a universal–invariant ratio between positive to negative emotions that serves as a unique tipping point between flourishing and languishing in individuals, marriages, organizations, and other human systems across all cultures and times. Known as the “critical positivity ratio,” this finding was supposedly derived from the famous Lorenz equation in physics by using the mathematics of nonlinear dynamic systems, and was defined precisely as “2.9013.” This exact number was widely touted as a great discovery by many leaders of positive psychology, had tremendous impact in various applied areas of psychology, and, more broadly, and was extensively cited in both the scientific literature and in the global popular media. However, this finding has been demonstrated to be bogus. Since its advent as a relatively new subdiscipline, positive psychology has claimed superiority to its precursor, the subdiscipline of humanistic psychology, in terms of supposedly both using more rigorous science and avoiding popularizing nonsense. The debunking of the critical positivity ratio demonstrates that positive psychology did not live up to these claims, and this has important implications, which are discussed in terms of “romantic scientism” and “voodoo science.” In addition, articles in the special issue on the “Implications of Debunking the ‘Critical Positivity Ratio’ for Humanistic Psychology” are introduced, as they also delve into these concerns.

  • Mapping Existential Loneliness : A Scoping Review on Existential Loneliness/Isolation Conceptualizations and Operationalizations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Humanistic Psychology. - : SAGE Publications Inc.. - 0022-1678 .- 1552-650X.
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last decade, there has been a renewed interdisciplinary interest in the study of existential loneliness (EL) or existential isolation (EI). However, to date, there is still no consensus in the literature on what exactly EL/EI is and how should be measured, resulting in a wide variety of definitions and operationalizations of the experience. Therefore, this scoping review provides an overview of the available terminology, definitions, and operationalizations of EL/EI. As part of the review corpus, a total of 121 reports out of 12 databases were included. In the text, first, an examination of the terms and conceptualizations commonly used to discuss EL/EI is provided. Second, key components of the available definitions in the literature are listed. Third, most common operationalizations of EL/EI are described. Taking this into account, this scoping review sheds light on how the variety of conceptualizations of EL/EI leads to significant differences in the operationalization of the experience, fostering the development of academic niches and the fragmentation of EL/EI scientific knowledge. Thus, this review is an attempt to map commonalities in the EL/EI literature that may enable the reader to understand what exactly it means to explore the existential dimension of loneliness.

  • Lifetime risk and cost of clinical mastitis in dairy cows in relation to heifer rearing conditions in southwest Sweden
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Dairy Science. - : American Dairy Science Association. - 0022-0302 .- 1525-3198. ; 92, s. 3274-3280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Relationships between heifer rearing conditions and the risk of veterinary-reported clinical mastitis (VRCM) during productive life were studied by generalized linear mixed modeling at the lactation level. Data consisted of 5,693 lactations in 2,126 Swedish Reds, Swedish Holsteins, or dairy cows of other or mixed breeds, representing all female animals born in 110 herds in southwest Sweden in 1998. During a lactation, a cow was defined as affected by VRCM if one or more cases were reported by a veterinarian, starting from 7 d pre-calving. The applied model of VRCM included effects of breed, parity, diarrhea between 3 and 7 mo of age, increase in body weight from weaning to first breeding, increase in daily concentrate ration before first calving, herd-level median age at first calving, cow housing, and random effects of cow and herd. The VRCM incidence was 14% in a given lactation, or 0.11 cases/cow annually; 31% of the cows had VRCM at least once during their productive life. Ninety percent of the variation in mastitis risk was due to factors at the lactation level such as parity, milk yield, cow diseases, and other disturbances, instead of cow or herd factors. Severe diarrhea between 3 and 7 mo of age was associated with 2.8-fold higher odds of VRCM compared with mild diarrhea during the same period, whereas the VRCM odds of calves with mild diarrhea were half that without diarrhea. The odds of VRCM had a predicted maximum at an estimated prepubertal growth rate of 859 g/d and increased with 10% for every 1-kg increase in concentrate ration during the last 2 mo before first calving. Costs of VRCM were estimated based on assumptions regarding veterinary service, extra labor, culling and herd replacement, discarded milk, and production loss depending on parity and lactation stage when VRCM was diagnosed. The total mean costs of VRCM were estimated to be $735 per lactation with a diagnosis of CM, $103 per lactation across all cows, or $95 per cow annually during lifetime.

  • A novel triple mix radiobinding assay for the three ZnT8 (ZnT8-RWQ) autoantibody variants in children with newly diagnosed diabetes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: JIM - Journal of Immunological Methods. - : Elsevier. - 0022-1759 .- 1872-7905. ; 371:1-2, s. 25-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and aims: Autoantibodies against the zinc transporter 8 (ZnT8A) are common in type 1 diabetes (T1D). ZnT8A analyses are complicated by the fact that there are three variants of the autoantigen at amino acid position 325 representing ZnT8-R (Arginine), ZnT8-W (Tryptophan) and ZnT8-Q (Glutamin). The aims of the study were: 1) to develop an autoantigen triple mix Radio-Binding Assay (RBA) for ZnT8A: 2) to identify the individual ZnT8-R,-W,-QA reactivity and 3) to validate the triple mix ZnT8A RBA in children with newly diagnosed T1D. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanMethods: Serum samples were obtained from 2664 (56% males, n = 1436) patients in the Swedish nationwide Better Diabetes Diagnosis (BDD) study representing patients with T1D (97%, n = 2582), T2D (1.7%, n = 46), MODY (1.0%, n = 28) and secondary diabetes (0.3%, n = 8). cDNA coding for the C-terminal end of each variant was prepared by site-directed mutagenesis and subcloned into a high efficiency in vitro transcription translation vector. The ZnT8 variants were labeled with 35S-methionine and used in a standard RBA separating free from autoantibody-bound autoantigen with Protein A-Sepharose. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanResults: ZnT8-TripleA was detected in 1678 (65%) patients with T1D, 4 (9%) T2D, 3 (11%) MODY and in none (0%) of the patients with secondary diabetes. Among the T1D patients ZnT8-RA was detected in 1351 (52%) patients, ZnT8-WA in 1209(47%) and ZnT8-QA in 790(31%) demonstrating that 1661 (64%) had one or several ZnT8A. The ZnT8-TripleA assay showed a false positive rate of 1.9% (n = 49). Only 1.2% (n = 32) of the T1D patients were false negative for ZnT8-TripleA compared to 0/46(0%) of the T2D patients. The precision (intra assay CV) and reproducibility (inter assay CV) of the ZnT8-TripleA assay did not differ from the RBA of the individual ZnT8 variants. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanConclusion: We conclude that the ZnT8-TripleA assay had low false positive and false negative rates. The ZnT8-TripleA assay would therefore be highly suitable not only to analyze patient with newly diagnosed diabetes but also for screening the general population since this assay demonstrated high sensitivity and very high specificity.
