  • Preparation of functionalized protein materials assisted by mechanochemistry
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : SPRINGER. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 53:19, s. 13719-13732
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herein, we investigate the suitability of hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL) as a protein matrix for dispersal of various hydrophobic dyes. Moreover, we investigate the use of a mixer mill for grinding operation as an alternative to hand grinding by mortar and pestle. HEWL and various dyes are mixed by mechanochemistry, and the resulting composite material is dissolved in aqueous acid. The samples are then exposed to conditions promoting self-assembly of HEWL into protein nanofibrils (PNFs). The effect of PNF formation on dye photophysics is investigated by spectroscopic examination by absorption and luminescence spectroscopy, and product morphology is examined by scanning electron microscopy. The self-assembly process results in protein nanofibrils functionalized with luminescent dyes. Such structures may find future applications in various devices for light emission. In addition, we demonstrate that the anticancer drug camptothecin can be incorporated into protein nanofibrils giving materials that can find application as drug delivery agents.

  • An aligned fibrous and thermosensitive hyaluronic acid-puramatrix interpenetrating polymer network hydrogel with mechanical properties adjusted for neural tissue
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : Springer Nature. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 57:4, s. 2883-2896
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Central nervous system (CNS) injuries such as stroke or trauma can lead to long-lasting disability, and there is no currently accepted treatment to regenerate functional CNS tissue after injury. Hydrogels can mimic the neural extracellular matrix by providing a suitable 3D structure and mechanical properties and have shown great promise in CNS tissue regeneration. Here we present successful synthesis of a thermosensitive hyaluronic acid-RADA 16 (Puramatrix (TM)) peptide interpenetrating network (IPN) that can be applied in situ by injection. Thermosensitive hyaluronic acid (HA) was first synthesized by combining HA with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide). Then, the Puramatrix (TM) self-assembled peptide was combined with the thermosensitive HA to produce a series of injectable thermoresponsive IPNs. The HA-Puramatrix (TM) IPNs formed hydrogels successfully at physiological temperature. Characterization by SEM, rheological measurements, enzymatic degradation and swelling tests was performed to select the IPN optimized for neurologic use. SEM images of the optimized dry IPNs demonstrated an aligned porous structure, and the rheological measurements showed that the hydrogels were elastic, with an elastic modulus of approximately 500 Pa, similar to that of brain tissue. An evaluation of the cell-material interactions also showed that the IPN had biological characteristics required for tissue engineering, strongly suggesting that the IPN hydrogel possessed properties beneficial for regeneration of brain tissue.

  • Biomacromolecules in recent phosphate-shelled brachiopods : identification and characterization of chitin matrix
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : Springer Nature. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 56:36, s. 19884-19898
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phosphate-shelled brachiopods differ in filter-feeding lifestyle, with Lingula anatina an active infaunal burrower, and Discinisca tenuis a shallow marine epibenthic animal. The shells of these animals are built of organophosphatic constituents, the organic fibres/sheets reinforced with calcium phosphate to provide a sophisticated ultrastructural robustness. This investigation examined the nature of the organic fibres in order to improve understanding of how living organisms produce hierarchically structured biomaterials. Unlike powdered samples commonly used in previous studies, organic fibres were isolated for the first time and the shell fractions were purified, in order to study the content and nature of the biopolymer fibres. Biochemical methods including Calcofluor staining revealed a chitin matrix. Ultrastructural analysis, thermal gravimetric analysis, and spectroscopic analyses show that the core polysaccharide framework is composed of layers of β-chitin sheets and/or fibrils that are coated with a fibrous organic matrix. There is more chitin matrix in the L. anatina shells (26.6 wt.%) compared to the D. tenuis shells (12.9 wt.%). Taken together, the data show that the chitin matrix contributes to increased skeletal strength, making L. anatina highly adapted for life as an active burrower. In comparison, D. tenuis contains less chitin and lives as attached epibenthos in a shallow marine environment.

  • Effect of high-pressure torsion on microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of cast pure Mg
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : Springer. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 53:24, s. 16585-16597
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-pressure torsion (HPT) processing was applied to cast pure magnesium, and the effects of the deformation on the microstructure, hardness, tensile properties and corrosion resistance were evaluated. The microstructures of the processed samples were examined by electron backscatter diffraction, and the mechanical properties were determined by Vickers hardness and tensile testing. The corrosion resistance was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The results show that HPT processing effectively refines the grain size of Mg from millimeters in the cast structure to a few micrometers after processing and also creates a basal texture on the surface. It was found that one or five turns of HPT produced no significant difference in the grain size of the processed Mg and the hardness was a maximum after one turn due to recovery in some grains. Measurements showed that the yield strength of the cast Mg increased by about seven times whereas the corrosion resistance was not significantly affected by the HPT processing.

  • Anatomical properties and process parameters affecting blister/blow formation in densified European aspen and downy birch sapwood boards by thermo-hygro-mechanical compression
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 48:24, s. 8571-8579
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Approximately, 13.5 % of the standing volume of productive forest land in Sweden is covered by birch and aspen, which provides the vast potential to produce value-added products such as densified wood. This study shows whether it is possible to densify those species with a thermo-hygro-mechanical (THM) process using heat, steam, and pressure. In this process, transverse compression on thin European aspen (Populus tremula) and downy birch (Betula pubescens) boards was performed at 200 ºC with a maximum steam pressure of 550 kPa. To obtain a theoretical 50 % compression set, the press’s maximum hydraulic pressure ranged from 1.5 to 7.3 MPa. Preliminary tests showed that ~75 % of the birch boards produced defects (blisters/blows) while only 25 % of the aspen boards did. Mainly, radial delamination associated with internal checks in intrawall and transwall fractures caused small cracks (termed blisters) while blows are characterized by relatively larger areas of delamination visible as a bumpy surface on the panel. Anatomical investigations revealed that birch was more prone to those defects than aspen. However, those defects could be minimized by increasing the pre-treatment time during the THM processing.

  • Photocatalytic degradation of phenol in aqueous solution by rare earth-doped SnO2 nanoparticles
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : Springer Science+Business Media B.V.. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 49:14, s. 5151-5159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of heterogeneous semiconductors on the photodegradation of phenol in water was investigated using doped tin dioxide (SnO2) nanoparticles. Photocatalysts of SnO2 were synthesized with lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), and neodymium (Nd) dopants. These photocatalysts were synthesized from tin tetrachloride by sol-gel method with different dopant concentrations, and its photocatalytic degradation was investigated up to 0.8 % under UV-A light in aqueous suspensions. The photocatalytic oxidation reactions were studied by varying photocatalyst composition, light intensity, reaction time, pH of the reaction medium, and phenol concentration. It was found that the photocatalytic activity of rare earth-doped SnO2 for phenol decomposition under UV light irradiation was considerably higher than that of pure SnO2 nanoparticles. The experimental results also indicate that more than 95 % phenol was effectively oxidized in the presence of an aqueous suspension of La: SnO2 nanoparticles within 120 min of UV light irradiation.

  • Phase transformation behavior of zinc metastannates obtained by aqueous precipitation at different temperatures
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : Springer-Verlag New York. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 49:20, s. 7282-7289
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phase transformation studies in ZnO-SnO2 system from zinc metastannate (ZnSnO3) to zinc orthostannate (Zn2SnO4) with annealing temperature are reported. Non-centrosymmetric oxides show unique symmetry dependent and spontaneous polarization properties, which are technologically important. ZnSnO3 particles were synthesized by a simple aqueous synthesis at low temperatures designed with the assistance of potential-pH diagrams. ZnSnO3 particles synthesized at 4 A degrees C are more porous losing the ilmenite structure upon annealing at 200 A degrees C, while the other samples prepared at higher temperatures (25-65 A degrees C) becomes amorphous at 300 A degrees C. The phase transformation into the inverse spinel orthostannate phase occurs around 750 A degrees C in all the samples.

  • Effect of O/N content on the phase, morphology, and optical properties of titanium oxynitride thin films
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : Springer. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 58, s. 10975-10985
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phase formation, morphology, and optical properties of Ti(O,N) thin films with varied oxygen-to- nitrogen ration content were investigated. The films were deposited by magnetron sputtering at 500°C on Si(100) and c-plane sapphire substrate. A competition between a NaCl B1 structure TiN1-xOx, a rhombohedral structure Ti2(O1-yNy)3, and an anatase structure Ti(O1-zNz)2 phase was observed. While the N-rich films were composed of a NaCl B1 TiN1-xOx phase, an increase of oxygen in the films yields the growth of rhombohedral Ti2(O1-yNy)3 phase and the oxygen-rich films are comprised of a mixture of the rhombohedral Ti2(O1-yNy)3 phase and anatase Ti(O1-zNz)2 phase. The optical properties of the films were correlated to the phase composition and the observation of abrupt changes in terms of refractive index and absorption coefficient. The oxide film became relatively transparent in the visible range while the addition of nitrogen into films increases the absorption. The oxygen rich-samples have bandgap values below 3.75 eV, which is higher than the value for pure TiO2, and lower than the optical bandgap of pure TiN. The optical properties characterizations revealed the possibility of adjusting the band gap and the absorption coefficient depending on the N-content, because of the phases constituting the films combined with anionic substitution.

  • Scale-up synthesis of ZnO nanorods for printing inexpensive ZnO/polymer white light-emitting diode
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : Springer. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 47:11, s. 4726-4731
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, possibilities of scaling up the synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods (NRs) by the hydrothermal method have been explored. It was found that batches yielding several grams can easily be made using common and easily available materials. Further, a printable composition was fabricated by mixing the obtained ZnO NRs into a common solvent-based screen printable varnish. Scanning electron microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, UV–vis spectroscopy analysis of the scaled up batch indicated that the ZnO nanostructures were of NRs shape, well crystalline and having less defects. Using the ZnO NRs-based printable composition a device fabrication on a flexible substrate was demonstrated, producing a flexible light-emitting device being highly tolerant to bending.
