  • Occurrence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococci in surgically treated dogs and the environment in a Swedish animal hospital
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Small Animal Practice. - : Wiley. - 0022-4510 .- 1748-5827. ; 53, s. 404-410
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectivesTo investigate whether hospitalised dogs treated surgically may become culture positive for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.MethodsSurgically treated dogs (n=45) were sampled for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus on admission, before and after surgery and at the time of removal of surgical stitches. The hospital environment (n=57), including healthy dogs in the veterinary hospital environment (n=34), were sampled for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Genetic variations among methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates were identified through detection of restriction fragment polymorphisms.ResultsNo dogs developed a wound infection due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. However, there was a significant increase in the number of dogs carrying methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius after hospitalisation compared to admission (P<0.001). No methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from dogs, but was present in the environment. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius isolates were recovered from environmental surfaces and hospitalised animals, but not from healthy dogs. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius isolates representing nine different restriction endonuclease digestion patterns were found, with two of these occurring in both the environment and on dogs.Clinical SignificanceDogs may contract methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius in association with surgery and hospitalisation. Resistant bacteria may be transmitted between dogs, staff and the environment. Dogs colonised with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius may be a source for hospital- and community-acquired infections.

  • Lifestyle risk factors for progesterone-related diabetes mellitus in elkhounds - a case-control study
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Small Animal Practice. - : Wiley. - 0022-4510 .- 1748-5827. ; 52, s. 240-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Methods: Owners of 48 diabetic elkhounds and 58 healthy elkhounds were interviewed by phone concerning lifetime diet and exercise routines. A logistic model was developed to assess the impact of diet and exercise on diabetes diagnosis. The agreement between lifetime owner-perceived body condition score (BCS) and veterinary-perceived BCS at inclusion was estimated in healthy control dogs using the Kappa statistic. Results: The model showed that diabetic dogs had increased odds for having been overweight (before diagnosis) compared with controls (OR=2 center dot 8, 95% confidence interval 1 center dot 1-7 center dot 5, P=0 center dot 034). Although feeding other food than commercial dog feed was associated with diabetes case status, the effect was not significant after BCS was entered into the model. The overall agreement between lifetime owner- and veterinary-perceived BCS at inclusion in the study was 75% and had a Kappa statistic of 0 center dot 16 (P=0 center dot 12).Clinical Significance: This study indicates that a high owner-perceived lifetime BCS is associated with progesterone-related diabetes in elkhounds.

  • An update on treatment and prognostic indicators in canine myxomatous mitral valve disease
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Small Animal Practice. - : Wiley. - 0022-4510 .- 1748-5827. ; 50 suppl. 1, s. 25-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mitral regurgitation caused by myxomatous mitral valve disease is the most common cause for congestive heart failure and cardiac-related mortality in dogs. Typically, it takes several years for the disease to progress from mild, clinically silent myxomatous mitral valve disease to severe disease with signs of congestive heart failure. A proportion of dogs will never progress into congestive heart failure before they die from other causes or old age. Some variables have been shown to be predictive of onset of congestive heart failure and they might be useful to identify dogs that need more frequent monitoring and eventually treatment. Results from several controlled clinical trials are available concerning medical treatment of dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease with or without congestive heart failure. These trials provide estimates of treatment effects and also allow identification of other variables with prognostic value for the outcome after the onset of congestive heart failure. Use of prognostic variables together with qualitative and quantitative results from clinical drug trials may aid the clinician and owner to plan and decide on optimal management of the myxomatous mitral valve disease dog. The purpose of this article is to review the current knowledge of prognostic variables and therapy for this common condition in dogs.

  • A prospective study of systolic ejection murmurs and left ventricular outflow tract in boxers
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Small Animal Practice. - : Wiley. - 0022-4510 .- 1748-5827. ; 52, s. 11-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence and progression of murmurs and the development of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) and flow velocities in the great arteries in boxer puppies through adolescence until three years of age. METHODS: Nineteen boxer puppies with or without a low-intensity murmur, but without evidence of congenital heart disease, were studied prospectively. Examinations were carried out at 7 weeks, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12 and 36 months of age by cardiac auscultation and Doppler echocardiography. RESULTS: Presence and intensity of heart murmurs varied in the same dog and between dogs, but flow velocities did not change. Estimated effective orifice diameter (EOD) and indexed EOD was significantly narrower than measured subvalvular and valvular diameters. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The variability in presence and intensity of low-intensity ejection murmurs is high during growth in boxers.

  • Rate of change of heart size before congestive heart failure in dogs with mitral regurgitation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Small Animal Practice. - : Wiley. - 0022-4510 .- 1748-5827. ; 51, s. 210-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Methods: Records and radiographs from 24 cavalier King Charles spaniels with mitral regurgitation were used. Vertebral heart scale (24 dogs), and left atrial dimension and left ventricular end diastolic and end systolic diameters (18 dogs) and their rate of increase were measured at intervals over years to the onset of congestive heart failure. They were plotted against time to onset of congestive heart failure. Results: Dimensions and rates of change of all parameters were highest at onset of congestive heart failure, the difference between observed and chance outcome being highly significant using a two-tailed chi-square test (P < 0 center dot 001).Clinical significance: The left heart chambers increase in size rapidly only in the last year before the onset of congestive heart failure. Increasing left ventricular end systolic dimension is suggestive of myocardial failure before the onset of congestive heart failure. Rate of increase of heart dimensions may be a useful indicator of impending congestive heart failure.

  • Clinical efficacy and safety of a water-soluble micellar paclitaxel (Paccal Vet) in canine mastocytomas
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Small Animal Practice. - : Wiley. - 0022-4510 .- 1748-5827. ; 54, s. 20-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective To determine the clinical efficacy and safety of a cremophor-free formulation of paclitaxel (Paccal Vet, Oasmia Pharmaceuticals) in dogs with mast cell tumours. Methods Paccal Vet was administered at a median dose of 145 (range, 135 to 150) mg/m2intravenously once every 21 days for three cycles to 29 dogs with macroscopic grade 2 or 3 mast cell tumour. Efficacy was assessed by tumour response (Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours version 1.0) and performance status score. Progression-free survival, quality of life and safety/adverse events were also evaluated. Clinical safety was assessed by clinicopathological analyses and recording of adverse events. Results Complete or partial response was observed in 59% of dogs. Performance status score remained constant or improved for 20 dogs and decreased by one grade for 9 dogs. Median time to progression was 247 (range, 42 to 268) days. Expected, transient frequently subclinical adverse events (primarily grade 3/4 neutropenia and grade 1/2 leukopenia) were observed in the majority of dogs. Nine dogs were euthanased and one dog died due to disease progression. Clinical Significance Paccal Vet appears to be a clinically safe and effective treatment for canine mast cell tumours. Further controlled confirmatory investigation is warranted.

  • Autosomal dominant mutation causing the dorsal ridge predisposes for dermoid sinus in Rhodesian ridgeback dogs.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Small Animal Practice. - : Wiley. - 0022-4510 .- 1748-5827. ; 47:4, s. 184-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: To define the mode of inheritance of the dorsal ridge and investigate if the ridge predisposes to the congenital abnormality dermoid sinus in the Rhodesian ridgeback.METHODS: Segregation analysis was performed, including 87 litters (n=803) produced in Sweden between 1981 and 2002. Data were corrected to avoid bias in the segregation ratio. Chi-squared analysis was performed including 402 litters (n=3598) for the evaluation of a possible genetic correlation between the ridge and dermoid sinus.RESULTS: The ridge is inherited in an autosomal dominant mode and predisposes for dermoid sinus. The frequency of ridgeless offspring in the Swedish Rhodesian ridgeback population is estimated to be 5.6 per cent.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Rhodesian ridgeback dogs that carry the ridge trait are predisposed to dermoid sinus.

  • Inheritance of dermoid sinus in the Rhodesian ridgeback
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Small Animal Practice. - : Wiley. - 0022-4510 .- 1748-5827. ; 46:2, s. 71-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: TO define the mode of inheritance of dermoid sinus.METHODS: A chi-squared analysis was performed on data from 46 litters produced between 1990 and 2001. Data were corrected to avoid bias in the segregation ratio.RESULTS: In data from 57 litters (n=492), 82 dermoid sinus positive offspring were observed. The frequency of affected offspring in the Swedish Rhodesian ridgeback population is estimated to be between 8 and 10 per cent.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Bias in heredity pattern may be caused by undetected dermoid sinus type V. Improved clinical diagnosis of all dermoid sinus types is therefore crucial.
