  • The Impact of Psychic Distance on Chinese Outward Foreign Direct Investments
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-181X .- 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 53:5, s. 659-686
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to investigate the value of the well-known construct of psychic distance, developed to explain the internationalization path of firms from developed countries, for the internationalization of Chinese firms. Our research question is: Does psychic distance and its individual stimuli (differences in language, religion, culture, economic development, political systems, education, and geographic distance) explain Chinese investments abroad? We test hypotheses on the relation between psychic distance and its stimuli and Chinese outward direct investments with OLS regression analyses. We find that Chinese OFDI indeed is influenced by an aggregate construct of psychic distance and by certain psychic distance stimuli, but not by all; in particular, similarities or differences with regard to language and culture, the level of industrialization and the level of democracy relate to Chinese firms’ internationalization. Our findings suggest that psychic distance and its stimuli cannot be ignored as explanatory factors for Chinese outward FDI but that the explanatory value of these constructs depends on the context of the phenomenon under study. We conclude that it is important to understand how the home country context influences managerial perceptions and thereby patterns of international expansion from different regions.

  • The Entrepreneurship-Philanthropy Nexus : Implications for Internationalization
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - 0025-181X. ; 45, s. 111-143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines how Sweden and the United States have been impacted by philanthropic activities, commercialization of university-based knowledge and international entrepreneurship. The analysis comprises a detailed case study of Swedish and U.S. universities, as well as a statistical analysis of the impact of philanthropy on economic growth. The results show that the United States has prompted a university system based on competition and variety, with an emphasis on philanthropy, promoting knowledge creation. International entrepreneurship has been an important mechanism by which this knowledge is globalized leading to increased economic growth. Conversely, Swedish universities were characterized by less commercialized R&D and weak links to the commercial sector, rooted traditionally in dependence on tax -financed and homogenous university structure. The Swedish model has begun to change with important implications for development in smaller domestic markets. The analysis has important implications for knowledge creation as a source of economic growth through international entrepreneurship taking advantage of globalization, especially for smaller countries.

  • Exploring the Effects of Vertical and Lateral Mechanisms in International Knowledge Transfer Projects
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-181X .- 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 51:2, s. 129-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Knowledge is critical for creating and sustaining competitive advantage and in today's fast-moving international market firms need to leverage knowledge globally. Therefore, one important question becomes what effect different transfer mechanisms have on transfer success. This study investigates 169 international knowledge transfer projects in multinational corporations focusing on the role of hierarchy, heterarchy and IT in terms of effects on knowledge transfer success, that is, efficiency and effectiveness of the transfer project. We find that the effects of the different integrative and coordinative structures on knowledge transfer success are contradictory. Centralization through headquarters involvement is negatively related to knowledge transfer success in both its dimensions, while previous cooperation between subsidiaries has positive effects on transfer effectiveness, but not on efficiency. The use of IT nurtures knowledge transfer success in both dimensions. This study adds to the knowledge about the effects of vertical and lateral mechanisms on the success of knowledge transfer projects.

  • Headquarters' Influence on Knowledge Transfer Performance
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-181X .- 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 50:4, s. 471-491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates headquarters' value-adding role in knowledge transfer. Transfer performance is considered in terms of both efficiency and effectiveness, and a model that includes headquarters' distribution of decision-making rights, resource allocation, and direct intervention is tested on 141 innovation transfer projects. The findings indicate that headquarters have both positive and negative influences on the efficiency and effectiveness of transfer processes. There is thus a need to consider the inherent trade-offs in the choices made in promoting knowledge transfer.

  • Beyond Simple Configurations : The Dual Involvement of Divisional and Corporate Headquarters in Subsidiary Innovation Activities in Multibusiness Firms
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-181X .- 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 57:6, s. 855-878
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate “dual headquarters involvement”, i.e., corporate and divisional headquarters’ simultaneous involvement in innovation development projects hosted by subsidiaries of multibusiness firms. Drawing on selective hierarchical involvement theory and the literature on subsidiary network embeddedness, we analyze 83 innovation projects in 22 multibusiness firms and find that the number of partners in the projects, rather than subsidiary intra- and inter-divisional embeddedness acts as a driver of dual headquarters involvement. We do however find that intra- and inter-divisional embeddedness is positively related to dual headquarters involvement when the number of partners in the innovation project is relatively large. These results lend support to the idea that parenting in complex organizations entail complex headquarters structures. Our results suggest that we need to go beyond simple conceptualizations of headquarters and that considering different dimensions of the innovating subsidiary’s network helps in explaining dual headquarters involvement.

  • Subsidiary Role and Skilled Labour Effects in Small Developed Countries
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Gabler Verlag/GWV Fachverlage GmbH. - 0025-181X .- 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 49, s. 27-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers the proportion of skilled labour employed by subsidiaries in small countries in the context of the strategic role of subsidiaries. Strategic role is connected to autonomy and intra-organisational relationships and the mandates given to the subsidiary. In the paper, we draw on the literature on the strategic development of multinational corporations, and insights from inward foreign direct investments in small developed countries. This ispresented in a unifying framework in order to predict diverse categorizations of the impact of subsidiary role on the proportion of their employment of skilled labour. The paper derives two propositions that postulate interactions between three roles containing different levels of autonomy and intra-organisational relationships in small developed countries that lead to different proportions of skilled labour in subsidiaries. We predict the highest proportion of skilled labour by subsidiaries located in small developed countries in the case of world mandates when autonomous-based operations are emphasized. When there is an emphasis on intra-organizational relationships, measured by product flowsand integrated international value-chain configurations, we predict the proportion of skilled labour to be highest in the cases of specialized contributors. We propose the proportion of skilled labour to be lowest in the case of local implementers.

  • Budget effectiveness in multinational corporations : An empirical test of the use of budget controls moderated by two dimensions of budget participation under high and low environmental dynamism
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Springer. - 0025-181X. ; 36:3, s. 245-266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Normative discussions suggest that budget process should be different in foreign subsidiaries than those of domestic subunits of a multinational corporation, but little is known about these differences. This study examines budget effectiveness of foreign and domestic units in a European multinational company by considering the three-way interaction of headquarter reliance on budget controls, subsidiary budget communication or influence, and environmental dynamism. A major feature is studying two dimensions of budgetary participation, communication and influence. Methodological advances over previous studies test the impact of three-way interactions.

  • Speed of SME internationalization and performance
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - Wiesbaden : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901 .- 0025-181X. ; 56:1, s. 67-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the performance consequences of the speed of SME internationalization. The authors identify three research gaps: few studies treat speed as an independent variable; most studies analyze speed only until internationalization starts; and, finally, studies have paid little attention to the multidimensionality of the speed concept. The authors seek to address these gaps and to contribute to the literature on the dynamics of internationalization by developing three measures of internationalization speed, which capture its multidimensionality. Building on the theories of learning advantage of newness and time compression diseconomies, the study presents three hypotheses on speed’s effect on performance, and the theoretically derived research model is tested on a sample of 183 SMEs visited on site. The analysis demonstrates that the speed of a firm’s increase in the breadth of its international markets has a positive but curvilinear effect on firm performance. It also demonstrates that the speed of a firm’s increase in commitment of foreign resources has a negative but curvilinear effect on the performance of the firm. These results have implications both for scholars interested in the dynamics of firm internationalization and for SME managers
