  • Caring for patients in the end-of-life from the perspective of undergraduate nursing students
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nursing Forum. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0029-6473 .- 1744-6198. ; 55:3, s. 433-438
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Caring for patients in the end-of-life is an emotionally and physically challenging task. Therefore, undergraduate nursing students (UNS) need opportunities to learn to care for the dying patient. This study aimed to describe UNS' experiences of caring for patients at end-of-life. Methods: Interviews with 16 UNS in their last semester of nursing education were conducted. Data were analyzed with a phenomenological approach. Results: The UNS created a professional relationship with the dying patient. It meant that when the patient was unable to speak for themselves, the UNS could still meet his/her wishes and needs. The UNS believed they could take responsibility for the patient who was no longer able to take responsibility for themselves. Meeting with the patient's family could be experienced with anxiousness but was dependent on the personal chemistry between the patient's family and the UNS. Conclusion: The UNS creates a relationship with the patient and their family. To be knowledgeable about the patient's physical and psychosocial needs means that the UNS can support the patient in the end-of-life phase. Being close to the patient and the family results in an intensity of emotions in the care situation. The UNS can receive support from their colleagues during processing their emotions and creating an experience from their encounters with patients in end-of-life care.

  • Quality of Life and Its Predictors among Patients with Selected Chronic Diseases
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nursing Forum. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0029-6473 .- 1744-6198. ; 2023
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. Quality of life (QoL) is an important measure to understand the effect of diseases on patients' daily living. Yet, the research on QoL among patients with chronic diseases in Oman is scarce. This study aimed to assess the level and determine the predictors of QoL among patients with chronic diseases in Oman. Methods. A cross-sectional correlational descriptive was run among 340 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic heart failure, and/or end-stage renal disease. Results. Participants' mean age was 60.6 years (SD ± 14.4) and the majority were males (63.5%). The highest mean scores were emotional well-being (mean = 85.2, SD = ±11.2) and role limitations due to personal or emotional problems (mean = 83.2, SD = ±35.8). In addition, COPD patients reported the lowest scores on the QoL questionnaire. Having a high score on the Karnofsky Performance Status Scale (KPSS) and being married predicted a higher score in the mental and physical domains of QoL, while having a higher total symptom number and COPD predicted a lower score in the mental domain. Older age, higher total symptom number, and a higher distress level predicted a lower score on the physical domain of QoL. Conclusion. The results call for a need to improve the QoL among the patients with chronic disease, including symptom management plans, self-management programmes, and training to enhance their own perception of QoL. Furthermore, symptom management plans are highly needed.

  • Lived experiences and caring needs in young adults diagnosed with cancer
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nursing Forum. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0029-6473 .- 1744-6198. ; 56:4, s. 781-790
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims and Objectives: To explore the lived experience of young adults diagnosed with cancer and to increase our understanding of how to help them with their caring needs. Background: Being diagnosed with cancer is normally related with an existential crisis. This indicates that the individual cannot avoid thoughts of death, loneliness, guilt, and meaninglessness. In person-centered care, the caretaker should have a holistic view of the person. Professionals must meet the patient´s different needs to strengthen health and well-being for the diagnosed. This approach encourages the traditionally passive patient to become an active consumer who works in partnership with the healthcare provider. Design: For this study, a content analysis of narratives was conducted, targeting age groups of 20–29 to take part of young adults' experiences. Methods: Qualitative analysis of narratives and followed checklist (e.g., COREQ). Results: During the analyzing phase, two main themes emerged: Interactions with Professionals and Cancer Voyager. In the results, both positive and negative feelings regarding encounters and support received from the professionals were described, this affected the young adults' well-being and their ability to participate during treatments. The young adults felt as being on a journey with no control over which direction the road may take. Conclusion: Outcome of the result shows the importance of making the young adult, one in a team. When working in a person-centered way, patients gain control by owning their own responsibility during treatments. Implications for Nursing Practice: There is a need in nursing education to address existential matters, to make nursing students ready to be approach but such questions in their professional work. Also, we believe that the experienced nurse must be given means to feel confident to handle questions about existential matters. By developing skills in the area of e-Health, collaboration through support groups, and last but not least switching to patient-centered care, we can offer effective and evidence-based care tailored for this population.

  • Fatigue among older people with pain--a neglected problem?
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nursing Forum. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1744-6198 .- 0029-6473. ; 45:2, s. 118-119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The frequency of fatigue among older people (both with and without chronic pain) and its major impact on daily life indicate the urgent need for further research about fatigue, the mechanisms behind it, as well as interventions to alleviate it. Such interventions are necessary to promote health, improve quality of life, and provide opportunities for successful aging.

  • A Concept Analysis About Temporality and Its Applicability in Nursing Care
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nursing Forum. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0029-6473. ; 47:4, s. 245-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Topic: Concept analysis of temporality. Purpose: To develop a comprehensive definition of temporality applicable to nursing care. Source: Published literature. Conclusions: Temporality is a central component of our experience of the world. Phenomena such as the passage of time, time cycles, the trajectory of aging, transitions toward something, something being, and life as a limited time are integral to human experience. Temporality could be seen as lived time, and as such it is subjective time as opposed to clock time or objective time. The temporal dimensions of past, present, and future constitute the perspective of a persons temporal world. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

  • Caring Theory and Practice - Entering a Simultaneous Concept Analysis
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nursing Forum. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0029-6473 .- 1744-6198. ; 47:2, s. 78-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PROBLEM.  To better understand the approach of caring in nursing and the role of theory in practice, we wanted to consolidate the caring theory of Watson with the empirical findings from the three studies performed to reveal nurses' caring intentions and their lived experience of reflecting caring theory in practice.METHOD.  Through a simultaneous concept analysis of nine concepts, caring science theory was consolidated with the findings of the three empirical studies to reveal the dynamics of caring theory and caring practice.FINDINGS AND CONCLUSION.  These nine concepts were found to be interrelated with the advanced concept of mediating care, which emphasizes that mediating care calls for an authenticity of being and ability—an ability to be present to self and others in the dynamism of openness and frames of thought.

  • The Recovery Process After Day Surgery Within the Symptom Management Theory
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nursing Forum. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1744-6198 .- 0029-6473. ; 49:2, s. 100-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The aim was to illustrate two cases in a postoperative situation following day surgery within the framework of the symptom management theory. Method: Template analysis using the symptom management theory. Result: Neither the woman nor the man was able to return to their normal activities, health status or functional status, within a week. Conclusion: The results illustrate how a postoperative situation may involve personal suffering up to 3 months. Practical Implication: To obtain an outcome following day surgery, as optimal as possible, improving clinical practices and routines, such as discharge criteria, guidelines, and care pathways, is necessary. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
