  • Joint Actions, Stories and Symbolic Structures : A Contribution to Herbert Blumer’s Conceptual Framework
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Sociology. - : Sage Publications. - 0038-0385 .- 1469-8684. ; 51:3, s. 685-700
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite its centrality in Blumer’s conceptual framework, the notion of joint action remains theoretically underdeveloped and empirically underutilised. To fill this void, the present article focuses on the dynamics inherent to the formation of joint action, and highlights actors’ deployment of available symbolic rules and resources for constructing the legitimising accounts that normally accompany their lines of action. The construction of such accounts, or stories, is viewed here as the prime means of reducing the intrinsic contingency of joint action and determining its content and terms as well as its direction and prospects. The article concludes by underscoring the importance of the suggested theoretical input for tapping some of the potential of Blumer’s approach, especially the one regarding its capacity to address subtle forms of power.

  • Enacting Resistance, Performing Citizenship: Trajectories of Political Subjectification in the Post-Democratic Condition
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 0038-0385 .- 1469-8684. ; 57:1, s. 175-193
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dominated by the "weak postsocialist civil society" thesis, Central and Eastern Europe has generally been uninspiring for social movement scholars. In recent years, a growing body of scholarship has challenged this pessimistic notion, highlighting the emergence of grassroots activism. What remains under-researched, however, is the process of political subjectification of society's apolitical segments through contentious practices. Informed by pragmatic sociology, this article explores three case studies – of student, civic and environmental movements, respectively – that demonstrate how citizens constituted themselves as collective political subjects by performatively enacting their citizenship through resistance in post-democratic Montenegro (2010–2015). Through analysis of news media sources and interviews with activists, this article postulates three trajectories of political subjectification – political becoming, political bonding and political embodying – by which citizens (re)gain their civic autonomy, allowing them to challenge dominant power relations and to attain political legitimacy to think, speak and act as relevant political actors on the public stage.

  • Introduction : Global Challenges for Sociology
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Sociology. - : Sage Publications. - 0038-0385 .- 1469-8684. ; 51:1, s. 3-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the 50th anniversary of the journal, this special issue takes stock of the progress that has been made within sociology to become a more globally oriented discipline and discusses the new challenges for the future that emerge as a consequence. From its inception, classical sociology was primarily concerned with the European origins of processes of modernity that were to become global. There was little discussion of how the global might be understood in terms of structures, processes and social movements not directly identified as European but nonetheless contributing to modernity. The challenge for sociology has been to take into account these other phenomena and to rethink its core categories and concepts in light of newly understood alternative formations of the global and the social movements that bring them about.

  • Postcolonial Reflections on Sociology
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 0038-0385 .- 1469-8684. ; 50:5, s. 960-966
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This contribution addresses the impact of postcolonial critiques on sociology by drawing parallels with the emergence of feminism and queer theory within the academy. These critiques were facilitated by the expansion of public higher education over the last five decades and the article also addresses the implications of the privatisation and marketisation of the university on the processes of knowledge production.

  • Does Class Matter Equally for Men and Women? A Study of the Impact of Class on Wage Growth in Sweden 1999-2003
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1440-7833 .- 1741-2978. ; 42:3, s. 522-540
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been suggested that class schemas are appropriate for analysing class relations among men but not among women. This article examines wage growth patterns, i.e. a crucial aspect of class relations. There are several reasons why class would be less effective as a predictor of wage growth for women than for men: for example, that factors such as discrimination blur this association for women; and that women are over-represented in occupational sectors where this association is less strong. The analyses are based on a Swedish panel data set of employees (age 30—35 years) in large private firms and in the public sector who had the same employer in 1999 and 2003 (N about 99,000). Class is measured using the European Socio-economic Classification — ESeC. Contrary to some expectations class patterns of wage growth are similar for women and men and for different sectors of the labour market.

  • ‘You are Still a Guest in This Country!’ : Understanding Racism through the Concepts of Hospitality and Hostility in Healthcare Encounters in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sociology. - : Sage Publications. - 0038-0385 .- 1469-8684.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While regularly applied to globalized migration, conceptualizations of hospitality have rarely been used to understand healthcare settings. Drawing on interviews with healthcare staff in Sweden, our article contributes to the current conceptualization of hospitality accounting for: the internal contradictions of hospitality that racialized staff experience in their everyday interactions with patients and other staff; the shifting boundaries between host and guest in everyday healthcare practices, especially when examined through the lens of racialization and finally; the subtle though troubled coexistence of hostility and un(conditional) hospitality that weakens resistance against racism. The analysis maps the complex contingencies of professional, ethnic and national relations between staff and patients, in light of their racialized and gendered nature, to suggest that the ambivalences theorized as part of the concept of hospitality show how the hurts of racism are so hard to pinpoint.

  • The Academic as Public Intellectual : Examining Public Engagement in the Professionalised Academy
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 0038-0385 .- 1469-8684. ; 49:6, s. 1031-1046
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we critically consider the widely held conception that the public intellectual is in decline. We present a more sanguine fate of this figure, arguing that today we observe a flourishing of intellectuals. One such figure is the academic intellectual who has often been looked at with suspicion as a technical specialist. This conception suggests that university intellectuals are diluted versions of the historical conception of the 'true' public intellectual - that is, an 'independent spirit' that fearlessly challenges unjust power. In this article, we contest this view, arguing that this historical conception, idealised as it may be, nevertheless can inform scholastic activities. By resituating the public intellectual as a kind of temperament rather than a title, we examine its pressing - but at the same time uneasy - relevance to contemporary academic life. Counterposing this with contemporary instrumental conceptions of research impact, we suggest that where possible the intellectual academic should aspire to go beyond academic institutional norms and requirements. Hence, the academic public intellectual refers to a temperament, which is in but not of the academic profession.

  • Parental Leave within the Workplace : A Re-assessment of Opposite Educational Gradients for Women and Men
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 0038-0385 .- 1469-8684. ; 56:5, s. 1032-1044
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Educational gradients in parental leave length are opposite for women and men: highly educated women return to work faster than those with low education while highly educated men are absent longer than less educated men. Explanations for the opposite gradients are typically made at the individual- or couple-level. To date, no quantitative study has documented whether the opposite educational gradients hold also within workplaces. In this study, we use employer-employee matched Swedish register data with fixed-effects models to examine whether the educational gradient applies also among co-workers in the same workplace. The results show that three-quarters of the educational effect typically attributed to the individual father disappeared when comparing fathers within workplaces. The educational gradient of mothers remained largely unchanged. These findings provide the first population-level evidence for the primacy of the workplace in determining fathers' care choices.
