  • Real-time control of physically distributed systems. Application : Motion control
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Computers & electrical engineering. - : Elsevier. - 0045-7906 .- 1879-0755. ; 18:1, s. 51-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A distributed control system, controlling the motion of a mechanical system, consists of several intelligent modules, one for each degree of freedom. Each module contains one actuator, one or more sensors and a microelectronics subsystem. The modules together execute the control engineering solution of the actual control theory problem. Typical motion control applications which could benefit from distributed control include industrial robots, vehicles, and tunnel drilling machines. By way of introduction the characteristics of motion control applications are described. Reasons for and trends towards distributing intelligence to actuators and sensors are presented. Due to harsh environments the microelectronic subsystems must be compact and robust. Technical trends facilitating integration of mechanics and microelectronics are described. The following issues are identified as critical when designing distributed control systems:Specification and verification methods for real-time systems; the view of time; consistency constraints; communication system architectures; predictable behaviour and debugging. A state of the art survey is given. Finally the question of how to map the control engineering solution of the actual control theory problem to the intelligent actuators is treated, i.e. choice of suitable allocation strategies, scheduling algorithms and communication system architectures. Fundamental static allocation strategies include master slave application systems (ranging from distributed low level I/O handling to distributed servo functions) and fully distributed application systems (ranging from distributed servo and superior control functions to a fully replicated global servo function).

  • Real-time plant phenomics under robotic farming setup : A vision-based platform for complex plant phenotyping tasks
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Computers & electrical engineering. - : Elsevier. - 0045-7906 .- 1879-0755. ; 92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plant phenotyping in general refers to quantitative estimation of the plant's anatomical, ontogenetical, physiological and biochemical properties. Analyzing big data is challenging, and non-trivial given the different complexities involved. Efficient processing and analysis pipelines are the need of the hour with the increasing popularity of phenotyping technologies and sensors. Through this work, we largely address the overlapping object segmentation & localization problem. Further, we dwell upon multi-plant pipelines that pose challenges as detection and multi-object tracking becomes critical for single frame/set of frames aimed towards uniform tagging & visual features extraction. A plant phenotyping tool named RTPP (Real-Time Plant Phenotyping) is presented that can aid in the detection of single/multi plant traits, modeling, and visualization for agricultural settings. We compare our system with the plantCV platform. The relationship of the digital estimations, and the measured plant traits are discussed that plays a vital roadmap towards precision farming and/or plant breeding.

  • An efficient ECC-based provably secure three-factor user authentication and key agreement protocol for wireless healthcare sensor networks
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Computers & electrical engineering. - : Elsevier. - 0045-7906 .- 1879-0755. ; 69, s. 534-554
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We first show the security limitations of a recent user authentication scheme proposed for wireless healthcare sensor networks. We then present a provably secure three-factor user authentication and key agreement protocol for wireless healthcare sensor networks. The proposed scheme supports functionality features, such as dynamic sensor node addition, password as well as biometrics update, smart card revocation along with other usual features required for user authentication in wireless sensor networks. Our scheme is shown to be secure through the rigorous formal security analysis under the Real-Or-Random (ROR) model and broadly-accepted Burrows-Abadi-Needham (BAN) logic. Furthermore, the simulation through the widely-known Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications (AVISPA) tool shows that our scheme is also secure. High security, and low communication and computation costs make our scheme more suitable for practical application in healthcare applications as compared to other related existing schemes.

  • Reducing Virtual-to-Physical address translation overhead in Distributed Shared Memory based multi-core Network-on-Chips according to data property
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Computers & electrical engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0045-7906 .- 1879-0755. ; 39:2, s. 596-612
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Network-on-Chip (NoC) based multi-core platforms, Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) preferably uses virtual addressing in order to hide the physical locations of the memories. However, this incurs performance penalty due to the Virtual-to-Physical (V2P) address translation overhead for all memory accesses. Based on the data property which can be either private or shared, this paper proposes a hybrid DSM which partitions a local memory into a private and a shared part. The private part is accessed directly using physical addressing and the shared part using virtual addressing. In particular, the partitioning boundary can be configured statically at design time and dynamically at runtime. The dynamic configuration further removes the V2P address translation overhead for those data with changeable property when they become private at runtime. In the experiments with three applications (matrix multiplication, 2D FFT, and H.264/AVC encoding), compared with the conventional DSM, our techniques show performance improvement up to 37.89%.

  • A single-cycle output buffered router with layered switching for Networks-on-Chips
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Computers & electrical engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0045-7906 .- 1879-0755. ; 38:4, s. 906-916
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a single-cycle output buffered router based on layered switching for networks on chips (NoCs). Different from state-of-the-art NoC routers, the router has three important characteristics: (1) It employs layered switching, which implements wormhole on top of virtual cut-through (VCT) switching; (2) In contrast to input buffered architectures, it adopts an output buffered architecture; (3) It is single cycle, meaning that the router pipeline takes only one cycle for all flits. Experimental results show that the router achieves up to 80% of ideal network throughput under uniform random traffic pattern. Compared with wormhole switching, layered switching achieves up to 36.9% latency reduction for 12-flit packets under uniform random traffic with an injection rate of 0.5 flit/cycle/node. Under 65 nm technology synthesized results show that its critical path has only 20 logic gates, and it reduces 11% area compared to the input virtual-channel router with the same buffer capacity.

  • Mobile services discovery framework using DBpedia and non-monotonic rules
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Computers & electrical engineering. - : Elsevier. - 0045-7906 .- 1879-0755. ; 52, s. 49-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mobile services are constantly evolving, thanks to improvements in performance of mobile devices and wireless networks. As a result, there is a need for and efficient supply of discovery processes that will even allow non-technical users and developers to publish, discover and access services in a mobile environment where non-functional properties (context and quality of service information) play an important role in the discovery process in conjunction to functional properties. In this paper, we propose a user-centric mobile services discovery framework that enriches functional descriptions of mobile services with semantic annotations from DBpedia knowledge (the semantically-structured version of Wikipedia) which covers multiple domains and provides lightweight ontologies. In addition, it offers open tools that can be used to simplify the provisioning and discovery of mobile services. The framework allows users to rank services using non-monotonic rules, which define their desired choices based on the context and quality of service information. Experimental results show that our framework provides efficient discovery results of efficient mobile services.

  • Non-parametric spectral estimation techniques for DNA sequence analysis and exon region prediction
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Computers & electrical engineering. - : Elsevier. - 0045-7906 .- 1879-0755. ; 73, s. 334-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bioinformatics is the analysis of biological information using computers and statistical techniques. This paper presents non-parametric spectral estimation techniques based on the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) for the analysis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequences. These techniques are efficient frequency-domain signal representation techniques, which improve the analysis of DNA sequences and enable the extraction of some desirable information that cannot be extracted from the time-domain representation of these sequences. The adopted techniques are the periodogram, average periodogram (Bartlett), modified average periodogram (Welch), and Blackman and Tukey spectral estimation techniques. The objective of these spectral estimation techniques is to investigate the locations of exons in DNA sequences for gene prediction. A comparison study is presented in this paper between the suggested spectral estimation techniques from the exon prediction perspective. The methods presented in this paper improve the detectability of peaks representing exon regions.
