  • New Aspects of the Mesolithic-Neolithic cemeteries and settlement at Zvejnieki, Northen Latvia
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Acta Archaeologica. - : Brill. - 0065-101X .- 1600-0390. ; 88:1, s. 57-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper reflects upon recent international research at Zvejnieki in northern Latvia, a renowned complex of a burial ground and two settlement sites used in the Mesolithic and Neolithic. Since its discovery and first excavations in the 1960s, Zvejnieki continues to produce evidence that provides new grounds for understanding mortuary practises and ancient lifeways. This information is relevant for other contemporary sites in Europe revealing new and hitherto unexpected elements of burial traditions. It is suggested that the Zvejnieki population was partly mobile, and the site was one of the places to bury the dead. The ancestral link was established through transportation and use of occupational debris from more ancient sites and through the incorporation of earlier burial space or even burials into the new graves. The depth of a burial also appears to be a significant variable in ancient mortuary practices.

  • Distant vikings : a manifesto
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Acta Archaeologica. - : WILEY. - 0065-101X .- 1600-0390. ; 89:1, s. 113-132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses some contemporary challenges in approaching the Viking Age, specifically the need for new interpretive models that we can bring to bear on its material culture, ideally drawn from cross-cultural, comparative analyses across time and place. A range of potential case studies is presented here from the island states of Oceania, across the broad socio-cultural networks of the Pacific. By looking at familiar Scandinavian sites and finds through a different lens, we can view them afresh and arrive at new understandings of this critical period of Northern history by comparison with these 'distant Vikings'.

  • Prominent migration period building
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Acta Archaeologica. - : Brill. - 0065-101X .- 1600-0390. ; 79:1, s. 62-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article presents a study on the prominent house foundation excavated in the parish of Botkyrka, Sweden by the Archaeological Research Laboratory at Stockholm University in Stockholm, Sweden. Lipid analyses and geochemical analyses were conducted in order to obtain several information on the characteristics of the rooms and to know the activities that have occurred in the building. The study concludes that the building is a estate building related with the handling of vegetable products.

  • Microdenticulates of the Funnel Beaker Culture : Lithic Attribute Analysis, Use-Wear analysis, and Contextual Analysis
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Acta Archaeologica. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0065-101X .- 1600-0390. ; 87:1, s. 11-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a study published in 1994, Helle Juel Jensen observed that microdenticulates are tools whose function is difficult to assess. She calls the use of the tools “an unresolved functional puzzle”. This study proceeds from that conclusion. Based on attribute and use-wear analyses together with contextual studies the results show that microdenticulates are complex tools, in which other parts of the flake besides the denticulated edge were used. The result also show that other flint objects from the flint asemblage were used for the same operations as the microdenticulates. The work comprised a conceptual action in which the production, use, and deposition of the material were all parts of the same process. The task was given in advance. The work probably consisted of preparing or treating plant fibres in some way in order to make thread, rope, bast, or the like. The result shows that seemingly simple tools like microdenticulates were a part of the materiality of the south Scandinavian Funnel Beaker complex. The work conducted using the microdenticultates and the tool box associated with them was associated with concepts shared by people over large areas (present day south Sweden and Denmark) over hundreds of years (from Early Neolithic to Middle Neolithic AI).

  • A New Look at Bjurselet. The Neolithic Flint Axe Caches from Västerbotten, Sweden using non-destructive energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence analysis for provenance determination
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Acta Archaeologica. - Copenhagen : Brill. - 0065-101X .- 1600-0390. ; 83:2012, s. 83-103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Because of the inexact nature of visual classification schemes and the resulting uncertainties of specifying raw material origins, geochemical methods applicable for sourcing Scandinavian flint have been sought. The authors have shown that EDXRF analysis yields geochemical data sufficiently precise and accurate to discriminate among many different varieties of archaeologically significant flint. However, these results are based on geologic specimens, most of which were culled fresh from in situ deposits. The goal of the present article was to determine if EDXRF analysis could yield meaningful results when applied to archaeological specimens. The Middle Neolithic flint objects discovered in the province of Västerbotten in northern Sweden, some 1500 kilometers distant from any flint sources, were deemed to be a suitable archaeological case study. Results from the Bjurselet analyses suggest that light patination does not appear to seriously compromise the geochemical results, at least for the elements tested here. Although EDXRF data alone were not sufficient for pinpointing the exact place of origin for the flint at Bjurselet, the results confirmed conclusions based on other kinds of evidence. The results provide an incentive to build up a more comprehensive geochemical library for further provenance work.

  • Towards an Understanding of Spatio-Temporal Dynamics at Great Zimbabwe : Contributions of the Urban Origins in Eastern and Southern Africa Programme
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Acta Archaeologica. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0065-101X .- 1600-0390. ; 90:1, s. 123-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 1987 archaeologists from nine African countries and colleagues from Sweden began a co-operation programme to study urbanism in eastern and southern Africa under the auspices of The Urban Origins programme. The programme involved 22 parallel field projects throughout the West Indian Ocean region and the southern Africa interior. The article presents a compilation of diverse material on Great Zimbabwe that has been scattered in different fora. The research was directed by an overall approach that investigations in urban archaeology in Africa must be at the same scale that people lived in the past. The results briefly presented here show the potential of multivariate assessments of the spatial distributions of large-scale urban sites in Africa.

  • Neptunus and To Løver : An Archaeological, Archival, and Dendrochronological Survey of Two Danish Prize Ships, Scuttled in the Stockholm Archipelago in 1659
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Acta Archaeologica. - 0065-101X .- 1600-0390. ; 94:1, s. 176-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the archaeological survey, dendrochronological analysis, and archival research concerning two shipwrecks located in shallow waters outside Vaxholm in the Stockholm Archipelago, Baltic Sea. According to oral tradition, the two wrecks are the remains of Neptunus and To Løver, two former Danish warships that were taken as prizes at the battle of Fehmarn in 1644. The Swedish navy then used the two ships until 1659, when they were reportedly scuttled as a blockage along the sea route towards Stockholm. Before being intentionally scuttled, the two ships drifted away and sank. The work presented in this article confirms the substance of the tradition and reports that substantial portions of the two ships are preserved. Moreover, the two wrecks shed light on the scuttling process and the construction of an underwater barrier.
