  • A Reinforcement Learning Framework for Optimizing Age of Information in RF-Powered Communication Systems
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 68:8, s. 4747-4760
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we study a real-time monitoring system in which multiple source nodes are responsible for sending update packets to a common destination node in order to maintain the freshness of information at the destination. Since it may not always be feasible to replace or recharge batteries in all source nodes, we consider that the nodes are powered through wireless energy transfer (WET) by the destination. For this system setup, we investigate the optimal online sampling policy (referred to as the age-optimal policy) that jointly optimizes WET and scheduling of update packet transmissions with the objective of minimizing the long-term average weighted sum of Age of Information (AoI) values for different physical processes (observed by the source nodes) at the destination node, referred to as the sum-AoI. To solve this optimization problem, we first model this setup as an average cost Markov decision process (MDP) with finite state and action spaces. Due to the extreme curse of dimensionality in the state space of the formulated MDP, classical reinforcement learning algorithms are no longer applicable to our problem even for reasonable-scale settings. Motivated by this, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm that can learn the age-optimal policy in a computationally-efficient manner. We further characterize the structural properties of the age-optimal policy analytically, and demonstrate that it has a threshold-based structure with respect to the AoI values for different processes. We extend our analysis to characterize the structural properties of the policy that maximizes average throughput for our system setup, referred to as the throughput-optimal policy. Afterwards, we analytically demonstrate that the structures of the age-optimal and throughput-optimal policies are different. We also numerically demonstrate these structures as well as the impact of system design parameters on the optimal achievable average weighted sum-AoI.

  • Long Term Channel Characterization for Energy Efficient Transmission in Industrial Environments
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 62:8, s. 3004-3014
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the challenges for a successful use of wireless sensor networks in process industries is to design networks with energy efficient transmission, to increase the lifetime of the deployed network while maintaining the required latency and bit-error rate. The design of such transmission schemes depend on the radio channel characteristics of the region. This paper presents an investigation of the statistical properties of the radio channel in a typical process industry, particularly when the network is meant to be deployed for a long time duration, e. g., days, weeks, and even months. Using 17-20-h-long extensive measurement campaigns in a rolling mill and a paper mill, we highlight the non-stationarity in the environment and quantify the ability of various distributions, given in the literature, to describe the variations on the links. Finally, we analyze the design of an optimal received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the deployed nodes and show that improper selection of the distribution for modeling of the variations in the channel can lead to an overuse of energy by a factor of four or even higher.

  • Conditions for a Monotonic Channel Capacity
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 63:3, s. 738-748
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Motivated by results in optical communications, where the performance can degrade dramatically if the transmit power is sufficiently increased, the channel capacity is characterized for various kinds of memoryless vector channels. It is proved that for all static point-to-point channels, the channel capacity under an equal-power constraint is a nondecreasing function of power. As a consequence, maximizing the mutual information over all input distributions with a certain power is for such channels equivalent to maximizing it over the larger set of input distributions with upperbounded power. The channel coding theorem is formally proved for an equal-power constraint. For interference channels such as optical wavelength-division multiplexing systems, the primary channel capacity is always nondecreasing with power if all interferers transmit with identical distributions as the primary user. Also, if all input distributions in an interference channel are optimized jointly, then the achievable sum-rate capacity is again nondecreasing. The results generalize to the channel capacity as a function of a wide class of costs, not only power.

  • Max-Min Power Control in Downlink Massive MIMO With Distributed Antenna Arrays
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 69:2, s. 740-751
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate optimal downlink power allocation in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks with distributed antenna arrays (DAAs) under correlated and uncorrelated channel fading. In DAA massive MIMO, a base station (BS) consists of multiple antenna sub-arrays. Notably, the antenna sub-arrays are deployed in arbitrary locations within a DAA massive MIMO cell. Consequently, the distance-dependent large-scale propagation coefficients are different from a user to these different antenna sub-arrays, which makes power control a challenging problem. We assume that the network operates in time-division duplex mode, where each BS obtains the channel estimates via uplink pilots. Based on the channel estimates, the BSs perform maximum-ratio transmission in the downlink. We then derive a closed-form signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) expression, where the channels are subject to correlated fading. Based on the SINR expression, we propose a network-wide max-min power control algorithm to ensure that each user in the network receives a uniform quality of service. Numerical results demonstrate the performance advantages offered by DAA massive MIMO. For some specific scenarios, DAA massive MIMO can improve the average per-user throughput up to 55%. Furthermore, we demonstrate that channel fading covariance is an important factor in determining the performance of DAA massive MIMO.

  • Jamming-Robust Uplink Transmission for Spatially Correlated Massive MIMO Systems
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 68:6, s. 3495-3504
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we consider how the uplink transmission of a spatially correlated massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system can be protected from a jamming attack. To suppress the jamming, we propose a novel framework including a new optimal linear estimator in the training phase and a bilinear equalizer in the data phase. The proposed estimator is optimal in the sense of maximizing the spectral efficiency of the legitimate system attacked by a jammer, and its implementation needs the statistical knowledge about the jammer's channel. We derive an efficient algorithm to estimate the jamming information needed for implementation of the proposed framework. Furthermore, we demonstrate that optimized power allocation at the legitimate users can improve the performance of the proposed framework regardless of the jamming power optimization. Our proposed framework can be exploited to combat jamming in scenarios with either ideal or non-ideal hardware at the legitimate users and the jammer. Numerical results reveal that using the proposed framework, the jammer cannot dramatically affect the performance of the legitimate system.

  • Direct bandpass sampling of multiple distinct RF signals
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 47:7, s. 983-988
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A goal in the software radio design philosophy is to place the analog-to-digital converter as near the antenna as possible. This objective has been demonstrated for the case of a single input signal. Bandpass sampling has been applied to downconvert, or intentionally alias, the information bandwidth of a radio frequency (RF) signal to a desired intermediate frequency. The design of the software radio becomes more interesting when two or more distinct signals are received. The traditional approach for multiple signals would be to bandpass sample a continuous span of spectrum containing all the desired signals. The disadvantage with this approach is that the sampling rate and associated discrete processing rate are based on the span of spectrum as opposed to the information bandwidths of the signals of interest. Proposed here is a technique to determine the absolute minimum sampling frequency for direct digitization of multiple, nonadjacent, frequency bands. The entire process is based on the calculation of a single parameter-the sampling frequency. The result is a simple, yet elegant, front-end design for the reception and bandpass sampling of multiple RF signals. Experimental results using RF transmissions from the US Global Positioning System-Standard Position Service (GPS-SPS) and the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) are used to illustrate and verify the theory

  • Iterative Detection and Phase-Noise Compensation for Coded Multichannel Optical Transmission
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 67:8, s. 5532-5543
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The problem of phase-noise compensation for correlated phase noise in coded multichannel optical transmission is investigated. To that end, a simple multichannel phase-noise model is considered and the maximum a posteriori detector for this model is approximated using two frameworks, namely factor graphs (FGs) combined with the sum–product algorithm (SPA), and a variational Bayesian (VB) inference method. The resulting pilot-aided algorithms perform iterative phase-noise compensation in cooperation with a decoder, using extended Kalman smoothing to estimate the a posteriori phase-noise distribution jointly for all channels. The system model and the proposed algorithms are verified using experimental data obtained from space-division multiplexed multicore-fiber transmission. Through Monte Carlo simulations, the algorithms are further evaluated in terms of phase-noise tolerance for coded transmission. It is observed that they significantly outperform the conventional approach to phase-noise compensation in the optical literature. Moreover, the FG/SPA framework performs similarly or better than the VB framework in terms of phase-noise tolerance of the resulting algorithms, for a slightly higher computational complexity.

  • Exploiting UEP in QAM-based BICM: Interleaver and Code Design
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 58:2, s. 500-510
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we formally analyze the interleaver and code design for QAM-based BICM transmissions using the binary reflected Gray code. We develop analytical bounds on the bit error rate and we use them to predict the performance of BICM when unequal error protection (UEP) is introduced by the constellation labeling. Based on these bounds the optimum design of interleaver and code is found, and numerical results for representative configurations are presented. When the new design is used, the improvements may reach 2 dB, and they are obtained without any increase on the transceiver's complexity. We also introduce the concept of generalized optimum distance spectrum convolutional codes, which are the optimum codes for QAM-based BICM transmissions.
