  • Moving Beyond Depression: Mood Symptoms Across the Spectrum Relate to Tau Pathology in Older Women at Risk for Alzheimer's Disease
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF AGING & HUMAN DEVELOPMENT. - 0091-4150 .- 1541-3535.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examined how symptoms across the mood spectrum relate to Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers in older women at high risk for AD. Participants included 25 women aged 65+ with mild cognitive deficits and elevated AD genetic risk. The Profile of Mood States Questionnaire measured mood symptoms and a total mood disturbance (TMD) score. Tau burden in the meta-temporal region of interest was measured using MK-6240 Tau positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. A subset (n = 12) also had p-Tau181, and A beta 40/42 levels measured in plasma. Higher TMD scores related to higher tau PET standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR). Greater negative mood symptoms correlated with higher tau PET SUVR, while greater vigor correlated with lower SUVR. Similar results were seen with plasma p-Tau181 levels, but not with A beta 40/42 levels. In conclusion, positive and negative mood symptoms related to tau pathology in older women at high risk for AD, highlighting a role of mental well-being in AD risk.

  • Caregivers' Reactions to the Physical Appearance of a Person in the Final Stage of Dementia as Measured by Semantic Differentials
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Aging & Human Development. - 0091-4150 .- 1541-3535. ; 37:3, s. 205-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The semantic differential (SeD) technique was applied to 158 caregivers from a nursing home in the northern part of Sweden. The questionnaire contained fifty-eight bipolar scales of adjective pairs and the interviewees indicated then-reactions to a described picture of a severely demented person: A factor analysis revealed three dimensions; an ethical one, an esthetical one, and one about the person's own feelings. The fifty-eight scales were mostly rated toward the negative poles. The severely demented person was rated as painful, apathetic, suffering, weak, afraid, sad, cold, dark, rough, and ugly.Four years later a comparable group of caregivers (n = 93) answered a revised questionnaire containing the 26 SeD scales with factor loadings > .50 for the picture of the severely demented person. The result was nearly identical and alternative interpretations are discussed.

  • Having plans for the future in very old people
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Aging & Human Development. - : Sage Publications. - 0091-4150 .- 1541-3535.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of having plans for the future among very old people and the factors associated with having such plans. A longitudinal population-based study with home visits for 85-, 90-, and ≥95-year-old participants in Sweden and Finland was used. Multivariate logistic regression and Cox proportional-hazards regression models with a maximum 5-year follow-up period were used. The prevalence of having plans for the future was 18.6% (174/936). More men than women and more people living in Sweden than in Finland had plans for the future. In multivariate models, having plans for the future was associated with speaking Swedish, being dentate, and living in the community in the total sample; speaking Swedish and being dentate among women; and speaking Swedish, having a lower Geriatric Depression Scale score, and urban residence among men. Having plans for the future was associated univariately, but not multivariately, with increased survival.

  • Embracing opposites : meanings of growing old as narrated by people aged 85
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Aging & Human Development. - Farmingdale, N.Y. : Baywood. - 0091-4150 .- 1541-3535. ; 67:3, s. 259-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many old people suffer from prolonged and multiple bodily ailments, new diseases, and increased risk for disadvantages and losses in life. Aging also means becoming mature and wise. This study illuminates the meaning of the lived experience with respect to changes in late life. Using a phenomenological hermeneutic method, this study analyzes transcribed interviews of 15 85-year-old people. Four themes were formulated: embracing weakness and strength, embracing slowness and swiftness of time, embracing reconciliation and regret, and embracing connectedness and loneliness. From these analyses, growing old was described as--maintaining one's identity in spite of the changes that come with aging and, embracing opposites--being changed and feeling being the same.

  • Determinant factors contributing to variations in memory performance in centenarians
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Aging and Human Development. - 0091-4150. ; 60:1, s. 19-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of environmental markers in memory performance among centenarians was examined in a study comparing non-cognitive factors to various aspects of memory performance. The centenarian group participating in the study consisted of 100 individuals (82 females and 18 males). Selected as non-cognitive factors were Quality of Life, Life-Habits, Health, Personality, and Autonomy. These factors were later compared to memory performance in short-term memory, semantic memory, and episodic memory. Using a structural equation model, results showed that performance in short-term memory was best predicted by life-habits and personality, while performance in semantic and episodic memory were best predicted by autonomy and life-habits. Implementation of the result from a life-span perspective includes a closer monitoring of environmental markers in the future. In effect, this could preserve memory function and optimum health through-old age, thus making interventions easier to realize.
